The big-hearted guys

Posted by Violette Thursday July 10 2008 at 5:07PM

...There is one in every MMO I play - A guy who's liked and respected by all, and always has a word of advice or a helping hand to anyone who asks. He has no enemies and although is one of the best players, is not snobby at all. Dependable, trustworthy.

There is Ferrell in Anarchy Online. He is almost legendary in the froob community and maybe even in the paying community as well. Always pleasant, caring. An expert on many aspects of the game. He is one of the reasons Newcomers' Alliance is what it is today.

There is Quinton in A Tale in the Desert. He founded the well-known Quinton's Resource Center (accessible by all) in Desert of Shades, a region that he felt needed more residents and research (it's one of the emptier regions in ATITD). He's always helpful and just wonderful.

Then there is Tom Aquinus in Runescape. Although even though he's diplomatic and helpful, he prefers to help the older players. He's one of the few players who have reached the level limit and everywhere he goes someone stops him to ask for some advice. He's wise, caring and tactful. A person to be admired.

And my friend Ruf Surface in Second Life. He usually works on creating products and selling them, but he's always there for a friendly chat or some advice.

I wish I could say the same for my own sex...

Do you know any guys like that in the mmos you play?

Runescape's kids - why so bad?

Posted by Violette Saturday July 5 2008 at 11:17AM

If the game had great kids playing it, I'd have no problem with it (and maybe other people)

But Runescape has rightfully earned a bad reputation due to its players, am I not right?

So if the majority of RS players are children, then it means RS kids = trouble.

But why is this??

I don't know about you, but when I grew up in the eighties (lol, now I feel old!) in Russia, we were taught to be polite and articulate and pleasant to deal with.

Maybe social standards don't really apply to the internet anymore?

(Sorry, my thoughts are a bit scattered, I'm just trying to pin the root of the problem)

I've observed some Russian kids online and the way they interact. I've no idea what they are like irl, but in most cases their grammar is compromised for the sake of convenience. (Maybe that's nothing to worry about?) But overall, they seem to be decent and pleasant.

Okay, next point: There are many more US servers in Runescape than any other server. So maybe we can conclude that the average kid that plays Runescape is from the US. If that is really true, what does that say about the kids of America? Or what does it say about why this game attracts these particular kinds of kids who have foul mouths, no morals, no tact? Their ancestors must be rolling in their graves!

I may be completely wrong. Someone correct me please.
