I'm an old school MMO player like in UO early days and so on.  But when I played WoW I noticed that this thing called Ventrilio or whatever took over guild play in MMOs.  What's the deal with this stuff?  I can't say that I support having to use real voice play in MMOs to play, but I'll do it if that is what it takes to get into a well organized guild.  How would I go about getting this and what do I have to have in order for it work?

Thanks.

No offence, but Vent has been the big thing since probably 2002...

The only difference between a Troll and a Fanboi is which side of the fence they stand on.

I do alot of things at once when I play MMOs... Vent is not one of them.

Every group I get involved with is always "get on Vent/TS"... I absolutely hate that remark (guess I remember pounding out hypothetical quantum equations while Discing in Tribes...) and always want to refuse to get on... that gets me kicked.

Until I met this guy in a bar.  He forever changed my life on the subject:

"Oh, I just tell people I'm deaf."

BRILLIANT!

he tells me stories of people who won't party with him because he can't go on voice chat, he tells me stories of people who say "Get on Vent anyways" (does that make sense to ANYBODY??), and he tells me that most of the time they make an exception for him.

So, if you run into a "Deaf" person in a MMO who won't go on Vent because of it... it's probably me.

That's cool but I started playing in 1997.  I did say that I noticed vent becoming popular when I played WoW didn't I.  I'm just telling you that it wasn't a big part, if any of Ultima Online (the mother of all MMOs).

Maybe not in the MMO community but programs like vent have been big since I started playing online games in the late 90's. I have also always used them in MMO's since my first guild experiance was a FPS clan moving over to MMO's. I don't think they are remotely necessary but for guilds they make socializing, and grouping miles better.

I'm not saying it is good or bad.  I'm just saying it's EXTREMELY hard not to have heard of vent by now..

I don't think Vent or even Teamspeak were around in the late 90s, were they?  Maybe Roger Wilco, but just barely and they certainly weren't "big" back then.

$oE , destroying MMO since 1999.

I pretty much ignore any guild that requires vent.

I do not want to speak with anyone in a fantasy world, I don't need to hear your mom screaming in the background, I don't want to hear your dog barking, I don't want to hear your hip hop beat in the background lol..

I don't like vent.
