When I subscribe to an MMO I justify the Subscription by telling myself I am paying for the "World".

But it seems as of late a ton of games are being released claiming to have a "World" but It sure doesn't feel like it. These worlds are nothing but Multiplayer Lobbies for small groups.

There is no continuity, the player has no way of making any "Impact" on the world.

The following are type of  "Worlds" true to the MMO Concept :

SWG - Best Game "World" Ever,

Ultima

Vanguard (I know the Game Sucks) but the "World" is constant. ~ "Real"

Dark Age Of Camelot

Game "Worlds" that are not:

Guild Wars (Yes I know it's Free).

DDO

AOC

POTBS

PSU

LOTRO

Tabula Rassa

Where Category would you put EQ2 & WoW in?

I gues what I am saying is I don't like paying for Intancing. That is not an MMO that is a Multi Player Gamer disguised as an MMO!

You're not paying for the world.  You're paying for the costs to run the servers, and the costs to constantly keep the game updated with new content and patches.

You kill the Joe, you make some moe

Yea I know what you mean OP.

Alot of recent mmo's have been taking the linear path with mmo's, giving players a set path to follow rather than an open complex "world"

Not to mention instances, i mean they are nice in allowing players to have a slightly more in depth situation or expirence, I don't see why it couldn't be done without an instance though.

I remember doing a mission in FFXI where it sealed me behind a fence and I had to go up against 3 tough orcs, their was a cutscene and everything you'd expect in an instance and what shocked me was that it wasn't an instance at all, right on the other side of the fence were other players watching. Absolutely loved that over instances.

Eve online did a good job of making a world, not to mention its all on one server. Maybe someday we'll get another mmo like that.

Not only are the non-instanced maps, also the "what can I do in the map". SWG, UO, EvE and the likes have lots of "social" tools and generaly developed big anc complex societies. Housing, non combat professions, cities, decoration, etc. It's like the web 1.0 vs web 2.0, it's all about being social. Don't know why mmos are going back to 1.0 when they already where in the 2.0 phase some years ago.

WoW and EQ2 both have just as much instancing as LOTRO so they would have to fit in your non-world section.

Would need a major update every 3 months since you could buy a new game every 3 months paying 15 a month. Running game servers are cheaper than you think, which is why there are so many free private servers.

Own, Mine, Defend, Attack, 24/7

I think story is only useful for telling how your character has arrived at the point where you start the game. I would like to think my story would be my experience within the game world. And what i did for myself, for other people and against other people.

At the end of the day i think it's horses for courses. Some people like that.

You are totally justified in expresssing your opinion on this forum. You have evolved. You are not alone.

I think I'll resubscribe to eve. Even though I'm not totally into the spaceship theme.
