I just tried this game today through a 7 day buddy pass from a friend.. Game play is slow, Interface is rubbish and  it has so many bugs, did they really beta this? Can't believe they would stick a monthly subscription on it.  Can't see it lasting for very long tbh would not waste my funds on it..

I'm no fan, but the game will not die. It's silly to think so. It won't, look around the genre for examples why.

The game will never go free. In my humble opinion, I guesstimate the populace will level off around 200-250K worldwide after the growing pains are done. FC seem to be pushing it though.

That is plenty to keep an MMO going.

mmm, I'd guess around the same numbers LOTRO has (I think that's somewhere around 100-150k right?) now. LOTRO was in a much better condition then AoC was at it's launch, plus expected to be what WAR is expected to be now.  I don't think AoC will do any better with those odds... in all honesty, AoC and LOTRO will probably be crushed to death around late 2008/early 2009 by everything coming out around that time, keeping around a 100k tops region.

It's sad that such a good idea for a game was run by such a manipulative PoS company... I really expected this game to reach the top with the help of WAR's competition, but instead it will most likely be crushed by it. More or less, it evens out for me because it helps teach MMO companies in the future that the majority of the MMO players aren't going to buy a piece of crap if it looks like one, smells like one, and tastes like one, even if the company says it's a steak (Anyone remember that remark by Gaute?). Hell, Mythic is showing that they've seen AoC's mistakes with the wave of information that was given all of a sudden on what the actual quality of WAR's game will be at launch.

They had a 1 week open beta and restricted it to levels 1-20 on tortage the only finished part of the game.  Amazing how unfinished the game is given that it was 2 years late at release.

The game wont die because some people will play AoC no matter what Funcom does or how bad the game is. But the Player base now seems to be around 40% at most of what it was 2 months ago.

It was designed to be Free2Play, they coded AoC to have in-game advertising, (google for proof). Tortage will look fantastic with billboards on the corners. Wait till an expansion or two and you'll see a F2P version.

What the heck would you advertise in a game set 12K years ago?

I have no doubt AoC will continue to go on if it stays on the current road of nowhere.

Case in point is SWG.  After the "NGE" debacle where the majority of its players left, the game is still there.  Lots of empty servers and all, but the game is still running.

Don't forget such classics as DnL, MxO are still running. Hell FC's AO still is.
