Cryptic Studios has published an FAQ which answers many common inquiries about their vision for Star Trek Online

When does the game take place?
Approximately 30 years after the events in Star Trek Nemesis. The game starts in 2409. Technology has advanced and the galaxy is a much more volatile place.

What races will we be able to play?
The plan is Human, Vulcan, Andorian, Klingon, Orion, Gorn, and several others. You will also be able to create your own race with its own custom look and attributes.

Will everyone be the Captain of their own ship?
Yes, but you will have to earn the responsibility and skill to command larger and more powerful vessels. Remember, in Star Trek as well as naval tradition, whoever commands the ship is the "Captain," even if it is not your current rank.

"Help save Fu Manchu, Moriarty, and Dracula."

Will you need to have to have an internet connection to play Star Trek Online?
Yes.

Heh!

Anyhow, sounds good so far. Looks like they've got the idea of teaming covered.

"pleasantly paralyzed"

Lame, still looks like its going to be a Ding/Gratz/loot game. I was really hoping they would do something more in keeping with Star trek. Like player crews and the like.

Looks like its going to be slightly less mediocre than perpetuals idea.

I'm a gamer before I am a Star Trek fan, and I think that having player crews may be a novel idea but would be boring as all hell. Having ship interiors and NPC crew walking around to liven things up would be enough for me in terms of immersion.

I just hope like hell that Ship-to-Ship combat is remotely similar to how combat in Starfleet Command (1 or 2, not 3) played out; emulated functions found in Starfleet Battles.

If this plays anything like that piece of shit StarTrek:Legacy game it will be a complete flop.  Legacy is by far the greatest piece of StarTrek crap I've ever came across.  Bethseda made a VERY smart decision by ditching them; frick'n muppets who don't understand what gamers want.  Take Note of this Cryptic!

Also, I like the idea that players are able to create unique races for them to play.  That is one hell of a novel idea in the world of Star Trek!!

Damn, I'm a Trek fan before game - which means I'm gonna be playing it as I'm playing SWG...

Anyway, it's gonna be RL-tearing - perhaps KotORonline might compete with it....

It''s not that I''m afraid to die. It''s just I don''t want to be there when it happens.

I agree. Having am NPC crew would work better than people manning bridge stations while in combat. In theory having players run those stations sounds like a great idea but in practice I think it would be difficult to pull off. Actually I think there could be a middle ground in between. I think it could be possible to have maybe two or three other players with you on the bridge and have the rest as NPC. Your two or three friends could pick the station they want to play and have NPC's fill in the rest. But having 5 or 6 or more people coordinate together on a bridge may prove to be cumbersome.
