I'd prefer to help people like Mythic, BioWare, Cryptic, Blizzard etc not make the same mistakes SOE made. SOE aren't seeing another penny from me.

I think we've seen a shift from full denial to damage control.

why i think ea-games is worse than soe is for one soe just doesnt shut down there games , had ea-games been running swg they woulda sheet canned it years ago regardless of any fanbase it had, despite cry-outs of customers, soe has tried to fix and has changed swg (i say fixed as thats the only thing that coulda made swg even playable was a total overhaul as had happened, I am a vet and I was getting mighty tired of everything breaking constantly in the old swg) but it hasnt canned it as most other companies would have done.

lets look at what games ea-games hyped up and cancelled

earth and beyond-cancelled (this was and is my favorite mmo still)

that one car one (I just cant remember the frikkin name of it) - cancelled

ultima-x -hyped up, started develop ment then cancelled

sims online- cancelled

if there are more that im missing from ea-games please fill em in.

ok lets look at what games SOE cancelled

some game about mythology ( I cant remember what this game was called)

Albeit SWG went through some major changes and imho was for the better as far as gameplay goes, it is still there, i can still enjoy it. swg was very broken for the longest time, there is a list of pre-cu bugs here somewhere on this site, and compared to now as to how swg played then it is wayyyy better, the new dev team is even working on getting the crafting back to being a vital part of the gameplay. The fact is the game in its pre-cu state was fairly unfixable, bug-ridden to hell, with subs falling daily, I watched my guild on bria of all servers go from 100's to a few and im talking before the CU hit, giving SWG a total overhaul w/o shutting it down on the people left playing was probably the only thing they could have done to try and satisfy the community and make a buisness decision with LA included. Gotta give em some sort of badge for being tolerant to a community of picky nerdy video game players and try to run a buisness partnered with LA all at once, I sure as hell wouldnt want to deal with us daily 24-7.

Best form of defense is attack? lol

I don't know about you but I'd prefer a game be fully cancelled and be refunded any outstanding gametime than have 2 years work pulled from under me, an expansion pack sold to me under false pretenses and any outstanding gametime I may have had running at the time?  suck it up! As for cancelled projects, SOE pretty much forced the cancellation of Gods and Heroes, effectively bankrupting Perpetual and ensuring there was no chance of Star Trek online being released anytime soon. Sure EA have rolled companies, they do so when they actually own them though, they attempt to absorb the assetts and it sure as shit doesn't effect future releases of the scale of ST:O. SOE saw Perpetual's devs out on the street, cancelled what was looking like a promising mmo and made sure that the Star Trek game was delayed for YEARS, that's quite some business practice right there.

The whole argument is dumb, trying to draw comparrisons or even saying one company is worse than the next. The question was about SOE, not EA. It's like you're being tried for knifing someone and your entire defense is that you should be found not guilty because the guy in the next court room shot someone .

Yes you would rather they screw an entire gaming community then only half of it.  This kind of logic makes me glad you dont work at sony and they they dont listen to you lol.   It also makes you just as inconsiderate as sony and probably more selfish.  (and they call me selfish)

Well at least I dont have to write anything in this thread ..

I would answer the questionaire, but its for "defenders of SOE/NGE" i'm neither I just see reality

I also dont think anyone is panicing about anything I"m sure not.   When this thing happens with the other game I will play it, If like it i will stay if I dont I will leave.

The game canceled with SOE was the company that went to sony and not the other way around they were designing star trek online and I think it was called Roma Victor.  In any event the game was cancelled because the company building the game cancelled it not sony then the company went poof and now cryptic is designing Star trek Online..

As for the rest of it.  The august release of the retrospective is out and I simply want to say that players have to realize and no that there will never ever be a game release for SWG tha encompases what the past or present version of SWG encompasses.   To those who play it now enjoy it because once its gone it will be gone.  To those who refuse to play it there will never be another replacement for what exists now and its a gaming experience to be remembered not complained about.

yes I'm feeling nostalgic.because I know that this particular game despite what its been through and the criticism its received will never be reproduced on this grand scale again any further attempt at a star wars MMORPG will be a mere shadow incomparison to what this one is and will never contain all the elements that this creation is now period! Nevermind the Proffessions that is all that is missing from the original version at this point.  The game is in better shape now then its ever been in and once the servers close on this game it will be a true shame.

Canceling a game is much less of a dick move than lying to your customers about fixes you're working on, and then revamping the game in a manner you know those customers you lied to won't like.  The changes to SWG neither made the game any better nor did they increase the number of folks playing.  The NGE had the exact opposite effect that the folks at SOe who pushed for it intended.  The NGE made SWG the worst MMO on the market, and it decimated the playerbase.  There has been nothing that has changed the game, or added to the game, since the NGE that has made the game anywhere near fun (to borrow a phrase that the president of SOE once tagged to SWG).  The core game is broken, and there are no tweaks or alterations that will ever make the game anything more than it currently is, a complete piece of crap.  The only thing that could fix SWG at this point is another complete revamp.  This is ironic, considering the folks at SOE have finally screwed up the game to the point where it needs a revamp, but they are unwilling to do so.

yeah cancelling the game and hurting everyone is a much better solution then trying to save your game from ever declining subscriptions , unfixable bugs and unbalancing proffessions by pouring man hours into it , keeping it open and revamping it..

Also how much is that swamp land you wanted to sell me?

This is what torques me about the NGE/SOE apologists - they act like vets aren't supposed to be mad/upset at all. Even reasonable anger is written off.

And I don't understand it.

Seeing as you are actually telling other vets that the should have closed down the game I would say that your wrong.

You wanted sony to shut the game down that would make you happy, but yet your angry they ,screwed you and took away your beloved game.   Yes its much much better that they screw an entire community and shut the game down for everyone and make every single of on their customers angry instead of some of them angry.   That's the kind of logic and rationalization of a situation that would make you the perject candidate for atila the hun being elected as CEO of any one of these gaming companies.  Thank goodness for small miracles that you dont work for these guys we have enough people being screwed already.

well its good for a laugh anyhow the "we dont want you to not have your game" is gone the "no we blame la too kinda is gone" its all gone and the true ruthless mean streak shows.   I'm so glad that this type of person no longer plays this game its much more pleasant on the forums and inside the game now..

They lost a lot more than half the community on Nov 15 2005, the other "half" they continued to screw by having them pay for an incomplete product for 2 years. If they'd pulled the plug there and then they'd have actually been doing everyone a good service, if you think that's selfesh? well ya, whatever floats ya boat.

yes I think the vets here a very very selfish.  They continually call for shut down of a game they hate.   People playing and enjoying a game is not screwing them.  They dont hold a gun to our heads and make us continue to play.  Now your going to say they should have made the updates 2 years ago.  I see the story changes with every twist and turn that is what I see.  You will mold it into whatever you like the bottom line is they have been working on this game now for quite some time.  The game didn't work before the Cu and didn'g work at the CU.  It started working as they implemented a new smaller more manageable system which they managed to repair. balance and then now that's done add content to.

The original version was obviously a mistake.   I'm glad they persisted and I dont feel robbed, cheated or anything.  I'm happy the game still exists and that they didn't shut it down instead and can the entire project because as an undertaking the scope of this game will never be seen again its simply far far to expensive and complex and since LA is the one contracting it and in financial trouble reality says something different then what you and others want to hear.   In retrsopect Sony in fact did something right and is now improving on the new base it built for that game.  It also has learned how to build better games and has managed to pull others outo f the toilet at the same time.  Sony as a company has learned its lessons and moved forward.  You however have not.  You see only one best possibility which was closure of this game and possibly others they hold.   I'm glad they didn't and so are most that take the time to think about it.

I'm sorry you dont agree but that's your choice.  I do however find people to be very selfish feel that the only solution to a problem is to give up and close down shop and move on thereby making an entire fanbase angry.  If they had done that I probably would never play another sony game again.   Instead they choose to keep their games running and fix them.  That's why they have games that are 10 years old and 5 years old.

If you can't see that I'm sorry, but I would much rather have this kind of company taking my money then a company that gives up 6 months after they release a product after having sold you the software probably cost you money in computer upgrade to run the thing (i hate to upgrade my computer before the game would run which is why I could not play it at launch).  If i want to play games that only last a few weeks I will buy stand alone pc games.  However these are community based games which are meant to last somewaht longer and that's why I play them.

So yes I do think its selfish and there is no way in hell you can say sony has been ripping peple off for two years its not like they didn't like they are mindless drones.  That's something you want ot make up to make yourself feel better.

Your problem is that you see the "vets" as one entity all with one disparaging voice, which is complete bullshit. Here's how I stand, I laugh at "my source", "LAWL SWG has 5k subs", "SWG closing down on X date" posts every bit as hard as you do. Sure they'd be great if there was any truth behind them at all, however they're the crack pipe dreams of a disillusioned few, the majority quit at the CU or the NGE and were never seen or heard from again apart from the odd grumble you'll see in general chat in any mmo you try when SWG is mentioned. Unfortunately the "vocal minority" seems to dream up these doom rumours, funny as it is to you and me alike it's unfortunate for SOE as they also had a silent majority fully behind the naysayers that SOE didn't account for.

I'm sorry you can't see that screwing 300k players out of previous time spent playing, ongoing subscription time after 2 major unannounced "revamps" are completely unethical business practices and no amount of half arsed "apologies" will ever be enough. I'm sorry that you paid SOE to beta test what they themselves have admitted wasn't even half a game. So you could say I pity you, pity isn't something normally acredited to the selfish, think on that for a while.
