Very old screens. The UI wasn't even on at the time of that screen. |

First, you cannot equate real life situations with fantasy games. It just does not translate well especially for MMOs. Your example is also flawed since the veteran would have better training, more then likely better equipment, and better mental state. The new guy would be holding his sword wrong, pissing his pants, and wondering why he has no armor. If you bring equality across the board then there is no individuality and the game will tank hard. Second, with that kind of equality numbers will count far greater then skill expecially since AOE and mass attacks will have friendly fire. That just makes my point even more valid about eastern asian clans. They will swarm in numbers you can't even understand. They will wipe the map clean and then beat you down some more. Seriously look up the history of shadowbane. The ARAC guilds literally drove players off servers from the incessant zerging. I love full PvP, I fought against them and I lost. The reason was because they do not stop ever. You can win repeatedly and they do no submit, they just seem to come with more numbers. They a relentless and the game stops being fun anymore. This could very well happen in DF especially if the servers are in a neutral area like Greece where neither side has a latency advantage. Be careful what you wish for, often it is not what you thought it would be and you are worse off for it. |

Ahhh I remember those days. It was one of those "Best of times, and worse of times" feelings. It will be interesting to see if something similar happens to DF. Has anything every been posted about IP blocks? I miss my old Confessor. SB had such unique classes, just marred down by bad problems. |

I know i'm just teasing ya. You happen to be one of the few supporters on these forums. That I do like and respect. I just couldn't resist poking fun at you.
Aww, and i felt for it I feel as a real smuck rightnow.
And for you others: MMORPGs are not about leveling up the character to be as everyone else. Its a shame if the MMO developers have made you thinks thats the right way. The noob-veteran scenario you talk about is very steriotypical and out of its content. Its like saying the a fat fighter is slow and the skinny is quick. And why would a noob have poor gear and bad nerves? As i recall, veterans are the ones with nerve problems : ) But there lays our main peoblem, MMOs today want to sell the image of you as a here. And we all know there is no heros. Not many people can handle that. Playing in a game and never becoming a hero. |

I know I'll probably be called simple minded for this, but.... To me it's not a question of Skill or Level Based, Theme Park or SandBox, Linear or Non-Linear. To me the only things I consider is Fun or Not Fun, Bug ridden or Polished. I really can't say I have a preference for one or the other. If it's fun I'll play it. I don't really find one more superior then the other. I've never wanted to be an online "hero". I'm only there for the fun. |

Daarco, you can't win this one I'm sorry. Are you seriously saying that a fresh recruit out of bootcamp will be equal to a veteran of several tours? Honestly? To say that Vets are more nervous in war situations then recruits is just silly and you know it. Now are there special cases? Yes, but they are not the norm. My point in all of this is that you are basing your argument on reality when it has no place in a fantasy game. It is a bad argument to make and I took nothing out of context. Even in real life every situation comes down to advantages, skill, and luck. As to no heroes... it is sad that you believe that. Real life heroes are not the comic book superheroes true, but the do miraculous things all the same. Just yesturday 32 people lifted a bus to save a child, they are heroes. Every individual who has a purple heart is a hero. I can only assume that you again are trying to relate fantasy and reality. I play games to have fun and being equal is not always fun. I remember back in Diablo 1 days when exploiting was rampant. I was part of a small group of people that would kill PKers exploiting the game and ruining others fun. Did I win most of the time? no. After all I did not exploit and it is wicked hard to kill someone who is, but I did win some of the time and when you lay a beat down on someone who should wipe the floor with you it is much more rewarding. having levels does not equal a horrible game any more then having skill base equals an guaranteed great game. |

It looks to me that a lot of people lack the imagination to play a game that doesn't reward them with lvlz and more hpz. Just as a thought, what if everyone was equal? I don't know about you guys, but my ideal MMO would have it that way, roughly equal HP and the only thing separating me from death by a noob's hand is my gear and my skill. Very FPS like. But then again, my idea of a fun MMO also doesn't place the sole emphasis on fighting and epeening, but I'm not sure how comfortable some of you guys would be in that kind of place. |
