I know this would seem to be a bizarre claim, given the state of play in AoC. But while I have enjoyed my taste test of WAR, which as a game is clearly far superior, I find it difficult to enjoy the melee characters as much. Casters makes relatively little difference, and the WAR casters are more interesting. But melee just seems more clunky. And the graphics are not as compelling (although I hear that we only have mid level graphics for this open beta, which is encouraging for improvements - while raising questions about performance.) I don't mean this as an attack on WAR. They have clearly put together a very nice game which will almost certainly be a big success. Again, as a game it really is much better. But it is interesting to me that for all its problem AoC did have a rocking combat feel. Now if only they could make the game actually work properly. |

Personally i hated the combat in AoC, i felt it was slow and clunky, pressing 5 buttons for a combo was a bit much. Especially on moving targets. As much as people blast wow, i like the combat, at least its responsive. |

The suspense is terrible. I hope it will last. |
I agree, it seems like if you want to survive in WAR and do the most DMG, you gotta choose a Range / DPS class which I finally pretty frustrating (I love the game so far, but this is definetly one of the things that bothers me). I can tell you right now (I am guessing now). All casting classes will be the most picked and the tanking classes will be comparable to your healers (nobody likes playing a heal-bot) in other mmo games (who really wants to play a tank in RvR / PvP). Expect to die alot more than a casting class.

Yeah, I have to agree with the OP. I was really hoping for more in combat than we got. The old system of pull with button 1, hit them with button 2 as they close, then cycle buttons 3, 4, 5 till opponent dead. I was hoping for something more. Even if they had gone back to DAOC and just tweaked it. AOC combat would have been even better though. I liked needing to pay attention, watching what the opponents shields were doing. Then picking the combo needed to push the damage through their weak spot. Or DAOC as mentioned, you had a few different 2 and 3 move combos. Some required a prereq to go off like block or parry or evade. It allowed you to preload a move and then back it up with a vanilla move just in case the condition didn't occur. Would have been nice. |

Ranged classes are always an issue in every MMO I know of. That's why I prefer to group. You go by yourself, you know what you will get.
And regarding combat, I prefer WAR's combat. In AOC I got tired of hiting combo arrows, it was just annoying for me. |

you must have not played AoC combat for long at first it was amazing then it just got boring and repetitive i thought it to be worse than auto attack plus there were alot of frustating things and with it like starting the attack before you get to someone then doing the final move when you start getting close to them the only cool thing they could have done in war is pre-set where each attack on your oppent will hit them and the opponent will have 3 shields they can easily switch to block the attacks alittle better. |

10 man Arthas? No thanks. OMG Legendary Bow! Rogue Weapon! |
Hahaha, AoC sucked so badly I quit at level 10.
That game was truly an Epic Failure. |

Not for me it didn't. It wasn't even a true combo system, it was "enter Konami code for action!" Blech. I prefer traditional MMO combat to that. It hasn't been hard for me to return to at all. |

I agree with you OP. AoC actually did something to me that actually makes it harder for me to play melee classes as well. Its simple, the AoC animations and smooth brutality of fighting where ...i hate to say... godly. I keep expecting someones head to fly off on the last swing before they die, or the smooth manner in which one attack goes into another. That the opponent would die in a more satisfying manner. I really hope other games in the future will "borrow" this feature because its amazing how... well how much we need it to our surprise. Heres a random video on youtube showing the melee again.... www.youtube.com/watch |
