I found my home. I flew a plane and died but enjoyed being in a hard-to-fly realistic place ...went rifleman and got killed. Think I'll read up and do some practice but looks like a real blast once I get into it.

Q:how many hours before one get's "accustomed?"

Q: any tips on manuals?

You need lots of practice. There are a lot of new people trying out the game too so you're not alone. I am thinking of coming back, I just want to know if the population has changed any. Comparing to this past April that is.

I remember when I started, tried flying, crashed and burned so went infantry. I played inf only for about a month and i died so much it was not even funny. But then you start to rethink your tactics, how do i hide the best, where is the enemy and key for me was, BE PATIENT. :) I ran out of my hiding way too often and died to exposuring myself to the surrounding way too much. Think IRL, what would you do if you think there is Enemies around.

Hathcock made a pretty good infantry guide.  You can download it here:

Dood!

I'm not a huge FPS fan, but it looks like this game may be fun to try for a bit. If I may, some questions for the experts and new arrivals both:

What features does it offer that make it worth play ing over a free game? An FPS is an FPS, is it not?

Also (I'm only interested in playing Infantry) I read that you need to be rank 3 to be one of the SMG guys, how long does that take? Single shot rifles are a snooze!

Are there population concerns? I read some conflicting info on this.

Thanks for any info!

The difference is:

1. Every action counts towards the "big picture" of capturing towns and winning the map. There are two factions, cities can be captured (by infantry only) and one side can really win. Every unit You loose and every enemy You kill is a piece of the puzzle towards winning or loosing. Every action You do counts towards winning or loosing! Every city captured is a gain for Your side and a loss for the enemy side and one step ahead of winning the map!

2. Player skill and tactics. Teamwork and coordination often decides about winning and loosing a city. Its all player-driven. A newbie can kill a general...a bullet is a bullet! Every soldier or vehicle is player-driven. There are these high adrenaline moments when You try to sneak up an enemy tank or approach an enemy forward base to place some explosives...and You'll never know how the enemy player(s) will react...

3. A hidden strategic layer of player-driven command structure: Player-officers and generals organise attacks, can move brigades and divisions, decide about production of weapons and vehicles in the factories, organise and lead the players! As a simple soldier You may just fight somewhere, but the location of the attack most probably has been selected by a high command officer to attack there and the win or loss of that city may have influence of a bigger picture battle plan of the player-driven high command!

Imagine BGE like a soccer or football match: There's the field and the rules. And two teams fight against each other. In this game You can play on different postions on the field and try to score, but You can also play as trainer or be part of the management of Your team. All levels need to work together to win!

Whilst this game is FPS for infantry it's also a sim for the vehicles.  It gets updated a couple times a year with new features and gear.  It's set in a half or third (can't remember) scale map of NW Europe so you can fly from the UK to Germany if you want, no zones, just one massive continuous map.  View range goes out to a few kilometers so you can use an 88 for example to kill enemy tanks with 1500m on the range dial.  It's the only game I've played were you need to set the range on your iron sights to shoot accurately at long range.  Prime time US pop is usually fine, prime time Aussie isn't that hot but there's always some fighting going on.

There's a free trail IIRC so download the client and give it a try.  It ain't as pretty as the new stuff but it the gameplay that keeps me, plus it a very hard game, you will die a lot.  As someone mentioned patience is the key.  Be sure to use the help channel to get assistance, a common complaint from new players is the near vertical learn curve.
