To live free is worth dying for. |
After playing today with the guild before work, I got ina good 4 hours of hard gaming, and I had a few thoughts I figured I'd discuss here.
I've been playing MMO's for far too long. Start with EQ and work your way forward I've played most (AoC and V:SoH being the only two I decided were not worth the effort) so now you know where I am coming from.
First off, it's the whole package. You have something to do all the time. Quests getting thin in your area? Fly on over to another racial pairing and get it on! Wanna do some group stuff? PQ's and dungeons await.
Need some PVP Action, scenarios and open real war is but a short jump skip and a hop away. It's amazing how interconnected the game feels. It's alive like no other MMO I've ever played is. I feel like I actually MATTER to the grand scheme, and am not jsut running around wasting time for my own selfish progression. (I.E. Gear and XP).
And that's just the start of it. I don't have to waste time with pointless time sinks. If I need to get somewhere, the FM can take me there quickly. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that.
My guild just hit lvl 5. I find that our working together towards the goal of bettering ourselves adds something that just is seriously lacking from other games. Couple that with all the unlocks in the ToK for mundane to quirky tasks you can do in game... The world isn't "pretty", not like other games that go for a certain artistic flair. It's not in your face, it's subtle here. I understand the restrictions they placed on the game are mostly due to ensuring that when the fight is on, more people can play without their computers imploding, so it doens't bother me in the least. The odd stuff you find in the world, in out of the way places makes exploring WORTH the effort. My wife and I (she's a black orc, I'm a zealot) go just wandering all over the place, killing stuff just to see what happens. Sometimes, nothing does. Other times "woah" happens and it's so much more enjoyable.
WAR is linear by nessecity in terms of the Teirs, understanding this little point enables one to appreciate what is done here. It's not an "open world" but it's hardly closed. You can see the intentional effort everywhere.

Even if WAR doesn't succeed straight away, it's possible it could become a cult hit and grow like EVE online has |

well said. I have yet to do all you have but it's great. Just did my first PQ, got into a guild and am having a blast, literally. |

The game looks and plays like a game my 10 year old sister should be playing. I wish they would combine the gameplay of WAR with the Visuals of AoC. I'm not a big fan of the trolls and all that bull. I loved AoC until it got really gay. If they could mix the style of AoC with some gameplay like WAR and WoW they might have a kick ass product. The only cartoony game I loved was The Realm... may that game rest in peace. Greatest MMO ever. Had community, economy, fighting, grouping, PvP, pickpocketing, you name it. :( I miss The Realm. |

Be afraid, very afraid. |
Agreed, the ability to quickly jump over to an RvR battle and back to a PQ is amazing as I did today. I was in a PQ when the game alerted me that a Keep was taken over by Order. I checked the map to find the keep in question was not far away, so I hopped onto my mount and headed over to help get it back. While travelling to the area I looked for an Open RvR group, hit join and I was in RvR mode, all in a matter of minutes. The ability to do this is not something I have seen in any game I have played before. |

Originally posted by PaRoXiTiC If they had pushed for AoC like looks the game would run poorly, so poorly it would hav eto be instanced. Further more large battles wouldn't happen and the available number of gamers to play would be far less. Take it a step further and the game would be pushed backed because of the intensive artwork required, the resources poured into the "ooohhhh pretty" factor would dminish game play.
I took the advice of another thread, went into my CCC and forced the card to run in overdrive, 4x AA and all that jazz. Not only did the textures come out, the beautiful particle streams kick in, but the video lag all but ended except in large masses.
If you want pretty pretty games, go get a 360 or PS3 and stick with single player games.
I'll stick with WAR and it's own subtle beauty and amazing gameplay. |

I'm only Destruction because the guild and wife demanded such...
I sneak off and spend quiet hours alone, late at nite... burning the heretics with my Bright Wizard, or judging the impure with Witch Hunter.
