I think you are off-target on the phrase I high-lighted above.  I'd expect at least as many European players as those from the U.S.  It wouldn't surprise me if the European player-base for this game was much larger than the U.S.

From Alexa:

Darkfallonline.com users come from these countries:

United States 53.6%

Canada 8.5%

United Kingdom 4.6%

Germany  4.6%

Australia 4.2%

This product (if it expects to succeed) will have to compete and prevail or at least hold it's own in the United States against games like WoW and War and all others.

Link?

hmm, mostly English-speaking countries on an English-only forum site. Who'd have guessed that?

Most of Europe and Asia don't speak English, and are therefore hugely under-represented.

Europe and Asia are far more important markets than the US.

While I'm pretty sure the numbers are inaccurate, I'd like to say that I highly doubt the highlighted statement. As a European myself I know for a fact that English is basically the second language of everyone and even moreso in the younger generation. To say that most of Europeans don't speak english is a big generalization and a wrong one at that (I'm not sure how the numbers are in Asia, so I won#t comment on that).

While certainly people will feel more comfortable using their own language, there's no reason to think they can't read/write/speak English.

Funny that Darkfall has considerably better graphics than both WOW and War and both of those games are a success. Hard to see Darkfall also not succeeding given how many more features it has.

Anyone else think the OP is Catizone/Teedle/the persistent fail-troll that Tasos reported on all those years back? I thought he'd given up when he saw how good the video was, lol.

I hate to tell how wrong you are, but you're wrong.

Go to Germany, Malaysia, Philippines, Hong Kong, India, hell even Tunisia and people will understand and speak english. I know because I traveled to half those countries.

List of SOE lies
What do Treyarch, EA and SOE all have in common? A habit of ignoring customer feedback and suggestions and their inability to properly beta test their products, resulting in crappy products.

“Mickey Mouse to a three-year-old is a six-foot-tall RAT!”

WHAT?  Most of Europe and Asia don't speak English??  ROFLMAO  Are you kidding me?  Most other countries have a FAR superior educational system than the United States and they are, for the most part, REQUIRED to learn English as a second language, whereas our American educational system is SO dumbed down that kids aren't even required to take ONE LOUSY foreign language COURSE any more.  Pathetic.

As far as the thread topic, however....it is my opinion that online gaming will become even MORE popular in the worst of economic times.  Why?  Because people can no longer afford the more expensive hobbies.  Heck, even going out to dinner costs a virtual fortune any more, especially once you figure in gasoline.  Staying home and being able to "play" something EVERY DAY, if you like, for HALF the price of one dinner out?  I think there will be a HUGE surge in online gaming subscriptions.  People still want entertainment.  And while I hear a lot of pissing and moaning about the price of games....they are STILL, by far, about the cheapest form of entertainment if you figure hours of entertainment value per unit of currency.

THE ABOVE POST IS MY OWN PERSONAL OPINION. Duh.
Now Playing: WoW, EQ2, EVE. Presently in closed beta for two upcoming MMOs, really looking forward to The Agency, Runes of Magic, Aion and TCoS releases. Still debating a return to Vanguard. I also play FPS games, such as Unreal 3 and Painkiller, and some single player games like Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. I'm addicted.

How many people are going to pay an EXTRA monthly subscription in todays economy to play a mediocre at best product like Darkfall with nothing but questionable features , support, community... when they can (and already are) pay to play War or WoW , Lich King which are all proven products with millions of players, quality support and no questions about their longevity or product stability?

Darkfall is not a product waiting to launch.. it's a product waiting to fail.

Have you played it? WAR dominating the industry? Pay to play WoW? Well.... I'll just say this, you are posting about Darkfall instead of playing WoW or WAR the games you praise so why is that? I know why because you need some attention so here is you cookie and continue waiting on Darkfall.... OK?

I *live* in Europe, I travel to Germany about 4 times a year for work and take about 4 holidays a year on top of that around Europe. I know what the status is.

Point is, numbers from an English-only forum site are hardly representative. There are tons more people living in both Europe and Asia, compared to the US. Given the total asses the US have made of themselves over the past decade (which may continue *cough* sarah palin...), i won't feel too upset if the US misses out on their own Darkfall server...

Whats the other 24.5% of people? aliens? who knows!? 53.6+8.5+4.6+4.6+4.2 doesn't = 100%

But seriously economic climate doesn't really mean much to a specific online game, generally I'd expect a slight decrease in the number of subscribers, but a good percent of people that do subscribe to mmorpgs aren't going to be directly effected by the economic climate as they aren't usually working but off ill indefinalty, I know that a lot of subs will come from people that do work but I'd be suprised if the number of workers is greater than non workers in regards to subscribers. Personally I wouldn't say its the the worst the economic climate has ever been, as there isn't mass job loss and mass depression but maybe I look into the clouds to much, just wish americas economy couldn't effect englands but for some reason it effects the world...
