TL;DR version:

Darkfall has been in development a long time, partly because it's a deep, complex game with many facets, and partly because the developers are extremely passionate (read: obsessive/compulsive disorder) about getting it right. They have openly discussed opening the game up to beta during the development process several times, but have never officially announced a beta nor a release, until august 2008.

Some might debate the high-lighted portion above... but I'd agree with the main gist of your summary.

I mainly posted Theodgrim's documented Dev. statements because it seems that even ardent followers of the game have forgotten what has been said about the subject.

It also helps to show why there are fans of the game that remain skeptical about some of the most recent statements.

Just because some of us aren't 100% postive about every Dev. word spoken doesn't mean that we wouldn't like to see the game actually release and succeed.

We are just reserving our "hype" until we feel it is justified.

Aventurine never announced a open beta nor release before 2008.

Only announced beta was this Razorwax beta announcement from 2002 which was a totally different game then the one we see now. Aventurine isnt Razorwax.

Some would debate what the quotes below means then?   Perhaps you could shed some light on what was meant by the phrases I've highlighted from 2003 and 2005?

I'm not really concerned about it one way or the other, but it would be interesting to see your explanation... especially since it's after the Aventurine/Razorwax merge.

I would be interested in seeing a link to this "totally different game" notion though.   There seem to be some Dev. comments that actually say the opposite.  I've highlighted one of them below.

Claus: Darkfall is entering closed beta testing in September this year. The closed beta is fully playable, with most core features implemented. We will be adding features and content during closed beta, while we gear up for the next beta stages.

GB: In the past couple of years, have any of your design goals changed? Has anything been cut/added from the development process?

Claus: Very little has changed. We have stayed true to the original design, and kept almost all of the features promised when we launched the Darkfall site two years ago. We sadly had to remove some popular features such as flying mounts, for reasons having to do with game balance issues related to sieges, and deformable terrain, due to possible latency issues. We have tried to make up for it by adding more content than originally planned. We'll be looking at possibly implementing these features at a later date.

GB: Will there be multiple phases to the public beta? Have you arrived at a date when you might begin such a beta?

Claus: Starting from Closed Beta in September, we will slowly add more and more testers. We will have an open beta shortly after, for stress testing.

The game werent restarted late 2002. It was more or less restarted under 2003. The exact date is just speculations from anyone since there is no accurate date for it.

First beta were announced 8/31/2002 5:15:00 PM 2002.

This beta and game were overtaken by Aventurine and were further announced during 2003 as i see it. It was the old Darkfall that were produced by Razorwax.

This was halted when their ambition level for the game increased with better funding and more developers. Simply- they wanted to make a better game then the one Razorwax had produced. Exact date and to what extent the old game were scratched and when they started to develop Darkfall of today is anybodies guess. We might get this info later on hopefully.
Tasos Flambouras:

Aventurine was originally formed to fund and publish Darkfall. The development team was in Norway, at the time it was four developers working on design, concepting, and prototyping. While working with Razorwax to put the development team together we realized how high the operating costs, and the cost of living is in Norway. We decided to move our activities to Greece under Aventurine to get more game for our money. It took a while to organize and assemble the team and to get into full production which started about three and a half years ago. Aventurine was now developing the technology, the tools, and the game. At the time this project started there was no technology available that would allow us to do what we wanted, so everything had to be made from scratch.

Our unofficial tagline and battle cry for Darkfall development is "No compromise". We've had vertical slices of the game before, and we considered moving towards a launch a couple of years ago. We didn't go forward because, to put it simply, we all knew we could do so much better if we gave it more time, and we had the resources to do so. I believe that the resulting game can stand up to any MMO out there and it's much more than the game we originally committed to making.
The game we see today werent started 2001. It was mainly started being developed 2003. What they could keep from the older Razorwax version of Darkfall isnt known.

The ambition level from the developers have been raised many times during the developing time as i see it. They want to make the game as good as they can.

Not sure what you're looking for to be honest.

They changed there minds?

They wanted to make the game better?

On this i think you have to ask the developer's.

This is how i see on it - a game that was good in their eyes 2005 doesnt automatically mean they didnt see more things to work on, does it?

The choice to continue develop the game have been informed to us in Darkfall Developer journals and is no secret.

They decided they could make a even better game. Over enthusiastic developers you might ask? I dunno, its their choice and theres only. Im glad they took their sweet time though and hopefully we will see a better and more polished Darkfall when it's released.

I agree.

We aren't trying to pour water on the parade of those who like to be more "energetic" with their posts about the recent Dev. posts and articles.  However, we do ask for the right to remain skeptical... as some of us have heard a lot of the talk before and then when it doesn't work out... it's spun to mean something else.  We've grown a bit more "reserved" with the proclamations of Beta in regards to Darkfall.

So... some choose to remain silent.  Some have chosen to speak out with a word of cautious skepticism.  Some have even turned into trolls of the game they once waited for with anticipation.  And yet others have become even more ardent fans than ever before.  Such is the makeup of Darkfall's followers... and to be expected with it's development path.   Hopefully we are indeed approaching the final delivery of a long anticipated project.
