Top 5 MMOs: |
MMOs were Originally designed to keep players playing for years. Todays mmo market has a ton of really good games from fantasy level based to sci-fi sandbox. From UO to WAR all of these games follow the "keep the players playing and paying" design. The MMO genre hasn't gotten worse, you've just gotten tired of it all. Think about it, how long did you play your first mmo? a few years? Then you left due to burn out and since then have tried every mmo on the market (playing each game no longer than a few months) hoping to recreate the feeling of your initial game. News flash guys you will never recreate that feeling you once had with your first mmo. The mmo genre isn't going to suddenly change into this never seen before game type that will have you feeling the way you did. If you find yourself waiting for a new mmo every couple of months thats a sure fire sign that this genre isn't for you. If you find yourself playing a game and telling everyone that you're just waiting for another good game to release so you can leave, you're tired of the genre and need to leave. Log off, uninstall, toss the CDs/Dvds in the bin and play a different genre. It's ok... you can do it. Its only a game after all. |

I played only some, however, only a few made me play for years. I wouldn't really blame the players for having committment issues, since everyone have different ideas of fun. I can't really blame the games either, making money is their number one priority. We can only pray that making a good game is their 2nd highest priority. Until players find something that suits their idea of fun, they will try to find it. If no MMORPG provide it, they will wait for new ones. I highly doubt genre is the issue here. What you find fun, it may not be true for others. Last thing anyone needs is some stranger telling everyone how to behave, and this is me speaking objectively too. |

I might be an exception but your assumption is incorrect in my case. I stayed in an MMO more time than I spent in my first MMO. I usually stay for at least 6 months in every MMO I really like and even when I leave I periodically return and check them out. |

OP applies to me a bit. I don't stay in a game for long, my record is EvE with 5 months. Let me explain. I have lot of SP games and also console games, which compete with MMO over my gaming time. And I kind of oscilate between these two groups. IE for few months/weeks I feel like playing a MMO, then normal games for few.

Originally posted by metalhead980 Nope I Disagree, Its a sure fire sign you didn't like the game is all. This genres problems have more to do with QUALITY then anything else. Maybe if companies stopped releasing half finished games that hardly run at launch more people would stick with them. As it stands most of them are such a mess at launch it takes a year plus to get them straightened out. Other then that its a matter of taste. I have played several MMOs over a year and it is TOUGH to find a game you like once you feel like moving on BUT it can be done and happens all the time. That's why there are trials. What I have noticed is that this site draws MMO drifters. You got people who play a game for 30 minutes and suddenly they are in depth experts on them and why they suck. All MMOs have their pros and cons and are designed with a different type of player in mind. Not everyone is going to like everything. Why you feel compelled to post a condemnation to people looking for "their game" is what I'm wondering.

May contain nuts. |
The difference is that there is such a wealth of choice out there now, albeit a lot of it decidedly mediocre. The MMO crowd are so transient now. They move from game to game, hoping that the next arrival will be the one they've been waiting for. But Invariably they always return to their 'main' MMO, and keep waiting. Back in the day, people were more likely to stick it out with an MMO as there wasn't much else available. It's suprising what you'll put up with when you have no other choice, and very few ever 'leave MMO's for good' no matter how much they protest. Ask the majority of MMO players and they've probably tried around 4-5 MMO's at the very least in their time, both F2P and P2P. |

ROFL Tell me this, you spend two or three years doing EVERYTHING in an MMO, when you finally burn out from playing in that one world for so long you decide it is time to move to a new game... Now WHY would you do exactly the same you've just done for three years, starting at the very bottom, all over again? Since WoW came out every MMO has been too similiar to each other, not the same, but not far enough apart to justify the time and money that people want to invest in this genre. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with games doing this, it happens in all genres, but there has been a distinct lack of innovation in the last three years. There are though, thankfully, plenty of innovative MMOs planned for 2009, none are from big name companies, but there should be something there for most of us vets to get our teeth into. We're not tired of the genre, we're just looking for something new to invest heavily in. Repeating experiences can only be done so often before you just become sick of it. |

I don't think the whole "you'll never recreate your first MMO" thing is entirely true.. I've had great fun on the times I've returned to EQ - Especially the progression servers (before they progressed to modern expansions :P) It is true to an extent; but I genuinely believe that some of the old MMOs are literally just better |
