Maybe you spend a lot of time looking at your character, but I'm usually looking at the scenary, other characters, health meters, etc.

I make my characters to be a reflection of myself personally.

If you play an avatar so that you have something attractive to look at that's fine, but I just think it's a little odd personally (alt-tab to some pr0n?). No offense to anyone

I don't know how a character appearance reflects yourself. When you're playing an Orc or dwarf does that reflect you? Or how about a spaceship in EVE?

Or when you're playing a single player game, how does your character reflect you?

Again, everyone that played Tomb Raider played Lara Croft, so you're basically saying everyone that bought Tomb Raider that wasn't a girl is a little odd.

And what's on your screen every time you play, no matter what you're doing? The character. That's one reason Tomb Raider was popular, players liked looking at Lara Croft. I doubt the game would be just as popular if the character looked like Danny Devito.

Actually I think the whole Tomb Raider  series appealed to a bunch of immature boys

Like, huge boobs, tight t-shirt and short-shorts... at the northpole....

Yes and in other obvious news, the sun is also quite hot.

Women also get treated substantially better in the 3D world.  Think Sarah Palin would have almost been VP if she were a man?     When young male gamers die do they  get mentioned repeatedly by Internet gaming sites (Laura)?       When going for an IT job and many other industries, two basically equal candidates get interviewed and one is a female.  Typically the female will get the job, barring the male being a relative of someone in the company.

Women absolutely get treated better in the gaming world and frequently in the real world.  (Unless they are running for President against a minority.)

Okay, this has been on my mind for a while, and I've decided to put the cat amongst the pigeons and say it.

I really do think that female characters in MMO's get preferential treatment, if the other player's think you are a woman in RL.

For awhile, I wondered if it was just my imagination.  Just small things, like when you log on and only one or two fellow guildies would say, 'hello', but then when a female player logged on, I would laugh as just about the entire guild jumped to say 'hello' to them.

I had never rolled a female character, as I just think it is a bit odd doing so, when you know that a lot of other players may mistake you for being female in Real Life.  However, the other day I was rolling an alt, and I decided to make it female.  A couple of hours into the game session I was staggered to see the way I was treated differently.  People willing to team-up, especially the higher levelers wanting to 'help me out',  Assistance with in game money, quests, and items, not a problem.

Also though, and I genuinely have some sympathy for real female gamers here, I got the occassional harrassment.  Almost always, I was asked by a fellow team member my 'A/S/L', and if I did not immediately tell them I was a man in real life, some of them would actually make some lude comments.  This happened 'EVERY' time I logged in with this alt, so I know it is not a one-off.

I understand that the main demographic that plays these games are teenage boys, and the more over zealous of them is without doubt the main cause for this.  However, it was an eye-opener, and not in a good way.  If I was a female in RL, then I would not like any of this treatment, even the kind offers of help, you never knew if it was for ulterior reasons or not.  I know that the counter arguement is that a female gamer could just roll a male character, but then is that not just accepting that sexism is rife within these games, and we have just accepted it?  Not that I am on any specific morale crusade here, I just thought that it was interesting the different way you get treated.

Anyone else experienced this?  And more interestingly; has anyone else deliberately used this to their advantage, if so how?

I think the age that female avatars were giving preferential treatment is over for the most part. Just about every horny teanager now knows that famale avatar does = famale in RL. I believe that This was more of an issue 4 years ago then it is today.

Now women on vent or teamspeak is a whole different ballgame, but even then I cannot honestly say that they are treated better. I would say if anything they are treated far worse, I have had to ban  from vent and kick from the clan more people in the past year over thier abusive treatment to the women clan members then in the previous 3 years combined.

Forum pvp ftw!!!

Haha, females don't exists on da intarweb. NANANANNANANNANA....can't hear you!!!!!1111

...ofcourse females get treated differently than us blokes. It's in the genes or something. A guy see a woman in distress his first instinct is to help her. After that comes what kind of situation it is, and if the man is capable of helping her. In mmo's this translates to men helping them with whatever. Some take advantage of it though. Read a few years ago about one dude who rolled females, and roleplayed them to get gold of his fellow wow player. He earned tens upon tens of thousand of gold that way. After a while, he posted his experience in some blog. Goes to prove than the man is a sadly predictable creature. The promise of female contact make him go head over heels

There is a dark side with that too though. One of my old friends from my teens is playing only female toons in these games, as she is a female herself. She told me some about the kind of harrasment she gotten over the years. She said she lost count on all the sexual harrasment reports she delievered off to some gm. Most of these guys she never seen again though so they where probably banned or got the message from the gm that they only get one more chance and then it's out for good. Sexual harrasment over vent is usual aswell. She can take sex talk (I do it most of the time when I talk to her. Talk pervy hehe not all the time though) but it's all in good fun. There is a difference in that and to make unwanted advances and to hear from total strangers how much they wanna bang her/stalk her/cut her etc. Damn, lots of idiots out there.

/face palm

If women were treated so much better in RL Hillary would be president, a few measly jobs where women are giving preferential treatment but paid low wages does not qualify as better treatment. The real world is Still very much dominated by men.

You cannot look at a few jobs in the USA that are dominated by women and say oh cool the world is fine women are treated equally, the fact is that in most of the USA and in most of the world Women are still passed up for promotion for a male, make less money then men, or in some countries still have little to no rights at all.

Now as far as gaming goes, is the horny teanager who constantly harrasses that famale player to cyber really treating her better? Are the countless Idiots in just about every mmo who refuse to even think of joining a clan / guild run by a woman treating them better?

There are some who undeniably would look at a female avatar and heap loads of game gold and items on that character in hopes of god knows what. Even then though there was a motive behind those gifts so you cannot call it better treatment. I doubt if you were a woman that you would much appreciate someone trying to buy you like a whore.

Feminism is the radical notion that women are people.

If you meet Sekksyseducer, run. Probably NOT a real female.

True, no self respecting female would have this name or dance in their skivvies on a tabletop.  If they're trying to "turn you on" then they're probably a guy.

scary, isnt it? some creepy people play mmos.

i personally think its creepy when guys play girl characters to dance naked on table tops, just gets you wondering about the person behind their screen..

And anyone who uses the excuse "id rather look at a woman ass than a mans" to explain their fixiation, well all I have to say is that there are plenty of other women in the game to look at without emulating one.  It almost makes you wonder if theyre afraid to look at their own penis.

Think about it. You spend time looking at your own character more than just about anything else, especially if the game has any travel times at all.

And guys play female toons a lot in single player games. You're not interacting with anyone else, it's a single player game. What could be the motivation there, other than looking at the toon?

What about if I played an orc or dwarf? If they can be female I'll make them look as much as possible like me (or at least some features like brown hair or green eyes) or just things that remind me of myself, and if I only have a male choice I'll still do the same thing, or I will just make a character that doesn't reflect me (but I'm certainly not making a character so I have something attractive to look at).

Same thing goes for single player, and I don't understand this logic you have by me saying that a guy choosing to play a girl for something attractive to look at relates to being forced to play one. I've been forced to play male characters for years, and even though the games were great I didn't enjoy that part much.

And I'm not even going to respond to the last one.. if you have a fetish of the way video game characters look that's your thing
