Sarcasm detector is a non existant entity ..

But if you wish why not hand out to OP for the subject "What happens if you die?"

When you die, everything (this includes gold, inventory, and equipped items) you were carrying remains where you died in a tombstone which anyone can loot. You respawn with just the starter gear. Oh, and mobs will loot anything that they can use (which they keep until they die) from you. Thus, if you die, don't expect to get anything that you had with you back.

I meant it isn't going to make a difference in the sense that you won't be spending all your time in game looking for new gear, you can just respawn, grab new armor+weapons and go. Context is key here.

It'll obviously be different, because gear won't make the player. Or if it does make the player, it'll make them dead very shortly afterwards as they get mobbed outside town for their shiny armor.

Yeah I got the context. If it's a trivial matter to regear your toon and what gear you wouldn't be too afraid to use has little effect why bother with the time sink in the first place?

Even sandboxes have fundamental rules such as; "Don't eat the cat poop, you'll die."

We''ve caught game developers posting vaporware rumors from work.

Yeah I got the context. If it's a trivial matter to regear your toon and what gear you wouldn't be too afraid to use has little effect why bother with the time sink in the first place?

a) Time sinks are good. If there wasn't a time sink involved in regearing, attackers could just endlessly batter at a defender (for example), respawning as many times as it took to win. With fully lootable but generic gear, defenders have some breathing space as attackers must leave after a failed assault to regear.

b) It makes crafting constantly necessary. Most modern MMOs relegate crafting to a subsidiary role, rather than a core mechanic. This is because crafting is never necessary to play - you can always get gear from NPC loot drops. With full looting, this isn't possible. While you can get gear from NPCs in Darkfall, obviously, you can't reequip an army after a defeat this way. A reliable source is needed, so people who are so inclined can spend their entire time ingame crafting if they want. In games like WoW, you have to be out adventuring - you're not allowed to be a crafter and nothing else.

c) It allows wars over resources. Gear might be cheap and plentiful, but the raw material to create it still has to come from somewhere. Whoever controls where that material is generated, can control the world. If there is no full-looting, world resources can still give a nice bonus but are never going to be game-changing to own, because you can still be effective without them. In Darkfall, if you have no access to the resources to create new gear, you're effectively neutered as you cannot fight if you have no weapons/armor.

I could go on, but I really have to get back to work...

I agree.

I think it'll be awhile before they get the perfect balance between:

Gear is important enough that I want to acquire it in the first place

and

Gear is not so important that it will make me want to quit when I loose it

Not sure why some seem to think that is just a piece of cake to balance correctly.  Even if we assume that the races are somewhat balanced in regards to their ability to PvP each other... it's a bit naive to assume that every bit of equipment will be perfectly balanced.

I predict that will be the biggest changes to Darkfall in it's first few months.  The equipment will be in a constant state of change to try and find that balance between:

important enough to warrant getting it... but not so important that it will be devastating to loose.

sounds like a game where i can finally become a real assassin.  a few poisoned crossbow quarrels in the back while they are looking at the markets then i bolt down side streets (maybe rooftops too?  i know we can climb up trees...what about buildings?) to escape anyone who is pursuing me and escape the city.

sounds like a whole lot of fun for me.  hopefully with looting Assassinations may also carry that extra little sting

So, in darkfall, when you die, the killer (or is it ANYONE?) can loot you.

But, what happens when I respawn?  I mean.. we'll all be new players to start, and I won't have an extra sword or reagents or an axe or a staff in the bank.. so.. am I just.. well dead?  Should I delete and restart?do I get more stuff to start?

Respawn at your bind point, with basic starter gear.

What happens when my character dies?
When your character dies he drops his items that remain on his corpse until looted, but the good news is that he's resurrected at a spot you've previously selected.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk..

But you sound like 95% of the other people on this board

Everyone wants to be that "shadow" badass who want's to kill for no other reason than they can.

LOL.. imagine a game where EVERY character is a rogue/assain.  How boring..
