My least favorate thing about some MMOs business models is the pay for the game, and the expansions, and a monthly sub. I would almost consider playing WoW (they do carrot and stick gameplay extremely well) if it wasn't for this strategy.

Please keep out !!!!

Already far too many players at the moment.

All the fault lies (lays) :)) with AoC and War for this.

How can you soar with eagles, when you work with turkeys.

Time is money.  The subs keep people in jobs.  Some large updates can be done with the minimum amount of further expenditure beyond the income.

But making expansions (which inherently involve making play areas that are much bigger than what you get in updates) can mean an increase in expenditure beyond the subscription income.   Hence why you sometimes you have to pay for expansions.

... and the server transfers, and a second account to hold alts, and name changes, and TCG cards for the in-game loot items, etc etc.

The sad part is that as bad as it is now, they are STILL "considering" adding an item mall type feature to the game.

Yep, Blizzard did run out of money, so they had to charge a little for WotlK.

There is no right or wrong -
There is only fun and boring.

11,000,000 subscribers x $15.00 A MONTH = $165,000,000 x 12 ( 1 year) = $1,980,000,000

Can you please explain to me how they are running out of money?

Working on Diablo 3, starcraft 2, starcraft ghost, starcraft mmo in their secret underground complex (seen resident evil 1?) and making that virus that will make all humans addicted to wow does take a bit of cash.

No rly

For the Horde!

Charging for an expansion is the norm, dozens of games charge for their expansions and have been for a decade.  It's worse in other games, you used to have an EQ expansion almost every 6 months, and EQ2 had mini-expansions called Adventure packs that you had to pay for which usually amounted to one zone, it was ridiculous.

Sure I would prefer not to pay anything at all, who wouldn't?
