The question to ask is this. Is it more profitable for Blizzard to sell boxes or to give away content for free. Are the number of people who 'quit' because they have to buy a box, higher than the amount of money they get for box sales. The answer is clearly no. A vocal minority even complain about having to buy a box, let alone actually quit because of it. You have to remember that Blizzard is a for-profit organization that is owned by stockholders. Those owners of Blizzard don't want Blizzard to be 'nice' just for the sake of being nice. I do own stock in ATVI, and I even think 'my' employees were being too generous with the free gametime they've been giving out. Servers have been down about 1.5 days total, yet they have now given out 4 free days. ( I'm mostly kidding about this, but you see my point). This isn't a gov't run organization or a community activity. It is a business that is owned by stockholders. If you really want someone to blame. Research who was the first MMORPG that realized that people paying a monthly fee would also buy another box of content ( can't remember if UO or EQ had the first boxed expansion). A final point. Marketing. There is nothing like a new box on the shelves to bring in new players. Even if Blizzard made no money from box sales, it would still be well worth their time just to put a box 'front and center' in every game store in the world. If you look at the sales charts from Amazon and other places, you will see that sales of the WOW battlechest have soared the last 2 months because of all the hype surrounding Wrath. |

Better to live in a desert than with a quarrelsome and nagging wife. |
I guess I can see the point in both views: A) Blizzard is a company and companies are driven by profit. Companies will continue to charge for their merchandise as long as people are willing to pay. B) The reason companies make expansions is to keep their player base by adding fresh material. Expansions are only made for economical reasons. Either way it boils down to profits. Blizzard realizes that people are willing to pay for these expansions, while games like Lineage 2 has free expansions since NcSoft realizes that people may not be willing to pay for the expansions but are willing to continue paying a monthly fee to play the expansions. It all comes down to the best way economically to keep their player base. I personally think a happy medium would be if blizzard had an option for a digital download at a reduced cost.

It's called capitalism. If you are willing to pay for it, then it's worth it. Why do NFL players get paid millions of dollars to play a game? Why does Madden put out a new copy of it's game every year and charge for a full game when it's nothing but an update? Why do the charge us to buy pet rocks? Why? I'll tell you why. Because they can. |

So you didn't ask why? I saw it right there in your post. Here, I'll even include it here above. If you knew the answer then why did you ask the question? They charge for it because they can. Every single for profit company in the world sets what they think is a fair price and the consumer determines whether they agree or not by either purchasing whatever they are selling or not. Based on early indicators, most consumers think Blizzard is charging a fair price. |
