Hi All,

Firstly please let me give you some background history on me.

I am a 33 year old married guy with children, I'm a casual gamer - but one that appreciated a challenge and one that will put 10-20 hours per week into Gaming.

My first ever MMO was FFXI, back in 2006? Just before it came out on the Xbox360. I created a character on the PC and played it also on the 360, he was a RDM level 24.

FFXI was the game that got me into the MMORPG scene and like many others I was 100% drawn into the game, taking up every spare moment of my time, so much in fact that I quit as it was getting between me and my familiy :-) (Sound familiar, how many times have you heard that?)

Anyhow, I took a break from MMORPG and then tried out WoW. Played that until the mid 30's and got bored. Played Vanguard for a while until it went tit's up. Played EVE for a while, got fed up and quit. Played a number of other beta's and then more recently WAR (still subbed but don't play)

Issue that I have is that all the games since just don't hook me like FFXI did. In fact, I just re-subbed to FFXI yesterday and I am really looking forward to playing for a few months. Probably won't be able to do too much with it due to the grouping issues and such (not complaining it's just how it is) but upon logging in today I did get that great feeling of being back home!!!

I suppose the reason I came and posted here is that I am interested to see what games you guys see as being a game you would want to play in the future. FFXI aside (don't want to suggest anyone 'moving' to a new game) what would you see as being a similar MMORPG (not replacement) that YOU feel would give you the same kind of experience as within FFXI?

I personally am torn on this. All the newer MMORPG just don't seem to have that 'community' that FFXI did. The closest to it being Vanguard which unfortunatley didn't do to well and doesn't run too well.

EVE was great, I just wished I had joined 5 years earlier and I may have been more inclined to stay. And it's a massive timesink like FFXI (please don't pickup on this, I'm not complaining - it just is)

AIOn looks like it could be similar, but apart from that I can't see much on the Horizon.

Thoughs & discussion would be appreciated.

Boney.

Lets face it, MMOs today are turning into single player console games with a chat box included.

Hate to break it to you brother, but group centric MMOs are going the way of the dinosaur. Newer games seem to cater more and more to solo content, and the communities just arent what they used to be. I honestly cannot in all truthfullness name one game that comes close to what you are looking for. I wish I could, as Id be playing it right now.

"My apologies to the devil, because we have only heard one side of the story."

I have srsly played every game on that list to the left (except a few in the in dev. section), and I would not rather be playing any of them.

The only ones that hold a candle to FFXI are EVE and Ryzom. Sadly there are no MMOs similar to FFXI coming in the near future, hopefully SE will continue to monipilize on the Group Based Niche with their next MMO.

Hope so,

I understand they are working on a new MMO but no real details or timescale?

What do you reckon to Aion? Does that look a bit FFXI'ish to you?

Nothing's really known about SE's new MMO project. They won't confirm nor deny that it's even FF related. All we know is they're targeting PC and 360 and likely PS3, with the possibility of Mac.

So we're all in "wait and see" mode as of now.

As for Aion. That looks like a very cool game. I've been following it for a while. I've seen it described as having the PvP of Lineage 2 (which is pretty open and competitive), the PvE of WoW (meh... lol) and some of the depth of story and such of FFXI (we'll see about that one :-p)

I know I'll be checking Aion out myself.

Somehow I knew in hell there would be mushrooms.

Personally, I'm really looking forward to the new sandbox titles: Darkfall, Fallen Earth, Earthrise, etc.

I just think that sandboxes help build a stronger community than most of these linear next-gens, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what things will be like in games like Fallen Earth especially.

I actually just re-subbed to XI after a long vacation.. having played games like TR, WAR and AOC made me nostalgic for it's amazing community and the challenge.

Aion and SWTOR both have my interest as well.. Aion just looks amazing, and I'm a huge fan of Bioware and KOTOR.

I'm not sure there will ever be a game out there even remotely similiar to ffxi in a lot of aspects. I too am looking forward to Aion coming out though. I really like the way the game looks and if the PvP is even close to as good as the PvP in Lineage 2 then I'll love that aspect of it. It seems to me that most games now might cater to the soloing style player though. I have read that in Aion grouping with be benificial to people but soloing will be viable where in ffxi it really isn't unless you're extremely skilled or using the correct job designed for that. As far as community goes you won't know how a community is going to be until the game has been out for a while. I'm hoping that Aion has a good story with a lot of depth to it and seems that is possible. The thing I am most concerned about though is. If the PvP is close to as good as L2 and the story can even scratch service of depth that ffxi has what I'm concerned about is the PvE. They coined this term PvPvE I still don't know what that's all about I get there are three factions and one is not other people. I'm just wondering about all of the other things though. Like boss fights and crazy missions that only ffxi has from all that i've seen.

TWILIGHT ONION!

Group based mmorpgs and challenge mmorpgs are dying people want everything given to them now. They dont want to socialize they don't want to work together and they don't want to "stress" the games are being made for god damn 10 year olds now! kill kill killl win win win..thats not a damn game im sorry.

The only other game I could probably consider moving to once im done in FFXI, (Which will very likely be the end of 2009) Is Vanguard if they keep it running and i fit keeps growing in number of players. Currently Vanguard is growing instead of dying. Surprise surprise after a terrible launch they are getting players in left and right. Games a lot better than when it first came out good graphics...and team based game play. To bad the music can't compare to this and the depth and feeling of immsersion is simply not there..but if i had to choose another game it would be Vanguard or the up comming Aion.
