When it comes to partisanship, I'm all in favor of disagreeing with those you oppose politically and engaging in vigorous debate over your differences.  All too often, however, human nature causes political differences to degrade into personal attacks on both sides.  Unfortunately, this reveals more about your character than the person you are attacking.  I will be the first to admit that I was perhaps a little harsher on Bill Clinton that I should have been and I hope I have learned my lesson and take a softer tone toward Barack Obama.  I will not be afraid to disagree with him when I think he is wrong, but I hope it never causes me to launch a personal attack against him.

For eight years now, George W. Bush has been the President of the United States and it has been a tumultuous journey for the entire country.  He just happened to be the man who was in the Oval Office when the United States was attacked by terrorists on September 11, 2001.  As a new President, he engaged in the war on terror vigorously and fought it in the way he thought was best for the country.  I'm sure he will be the first to admit that he made some mistakes along the way, but as a human being, it's such an enormous task to take that much responsibility on oneself and always make the right decision.

Immediately after 9-11, Bush enjoyed one the highest approval ratings in history, reaching 91%.  That number has since fallen to an average of about 31%.  But much worse than the low approval rating is the downright hatred that has been expressed toward him by those who oppose him.  It's such a shame that disagreement has to devolve into hatred.  I'm willing to respect a person who disagrees with Bush's policies on a rational basis, heck, I have disagreed with some of them from time to time myself.  But what I have little or no respect for those who turn their disagreement into hate.

I decided to make this post when I heard about an editorial that was written by Jeffrey Shaprio in the Wall Street Journal today.  He agrees that the personal attacks on Bush have been unwarranted.  The striking thing about Shapiro is that he was a member of John Kerry's legal team during the 2004 election.

For whatever reason (I think I know why) the press has not been very favorable to Bush over the course of his Presidency either.  They have chosen to write about the things that show him primarily in a negative light and ignored the good things he has done.  How many people are aware, for example, that Bush has been the most generous President to Africa in the history of the United States?  You may know it, but how often have you heard about it in the media?  I have only rarely seen a story on it.  The coverage, which could be so beneficial to the African continent, has been so neglected that Bob Geldof has taken the American media to task on it and has drawn criticism himself from Bush haters.

So, in closing, if after reading this post, you still can't stand Bush, that's up to you.  But it might be a little better for the country if you toned down the hate a little bit.

Yeah and when he gives back the billions taken from us due to gas hikes (in his term...being an oil man) I'll give him respect, until then bush can contract anal cancer for all I care.

He's a douche bag thief.

And to you bush supporters: Did you support your bully at school? Why the hell would you support Bush of all people. He made billions off us , you can bet your ass his whole family did. Supporting bush is like getting your face smashed in with a hot iron and asking for more.

It's just stupid.

He stole via using his power to "Assist" his buddies over at big oil.

Hence the 4.96 a gal for gas that had previously been 2.50 (CA).

God...what the fuck man.

EDIT: Lets not forget our freedoms being greatly reduced from a one time incident and never installed again, yes lets love this guy who basically made us all look stupid, he fouled his way into office, took a ton of privacy's away, made huge money with oil and then dropped it when he's on the way out.

Way to remember a dictator fondly! You'd have to be stupid.

It''s not that I''m afraid to die. It''s just I don''t want to be there when it happens.

He's been very generous with our tax money in Iraq as well I hear. I'm sorry but very, very few people are going to have any warm and fuzzy feelings for George.  He made his "legacy" and he'll have to live with it and the American taxpayer will be paying for it for decades to come. You may find it in your heart to forgive him and I'm usually a forgiving man but I'm not that forgiving.

You are completely missing my point. I am not ignoring the history. I have studied it all my life.

You sure seem to type this line a lot Fishermage. Could it be, maybe however slight, that NO ONE is missing your points, however convoluted they may be, and that you are actually the one thats missing the point? That thought never once entered your mind? Arrogance is a dangerous drug, my friend. Especially when put to pretty prose cause you start getting dizzy off your own nice smell, getting high off your own supply.

You use so many semantical words and sentences its just not funny. Although no one says they hate the US, you print they do. Although no one says anything about giving up on some mythical 'World War 3', you print they suggest it.

First, I would have to admit we are in a ACTUAL World War3, which we are clearly are not. The rest of the world in not involved in the United States' 'World War', so how can you keep calling it that? Hell, I think the biggest ally we still have left over there at the "war" is... like 500 Italians or something? And 450 of those are behind the lines. We are alone in a poor fight that can bring about nothing but world instabily, which it has thus far. Stop confusing police actions of a state like ours in Iraq and try to liken that to some actual war. There will be no "peace treaty" or anything else resembling a war other than people dying, which by the way, happens all the time all over the world.

When someone who makes much better points about your faulty logic than I can, Sharajat, you decide all of a sudden that hes 'rude and mean',then all of a sudden you wanna go play WoW. Thats pretty.. um. "Well, if youre not gonna play by my rules, I'm taking the ball and going home."

I type this line a lot because folks like you and a few others from the left intentionally and willfully miss people's points in order to argue against straw men. It is a cheap, but typical tactic used on the internet -- and I rightly call people on it.

You can ignore the facts all you want, it's what your side is good at.

Plus I didn't decide to just play WoW -- the midnight release did. I NEVER run from an internet fight, but I call people on their rudeness, their fallacious arguments, and their general bad behavior.

As long as people behave in a decent manner which CAN be answered, I answered them. I will continue to do so.
