Perhaps Americans should be putting more pressure on Brand name drug companies buy purchasing thier cheaper generic alternative, which are suppose to be garuanteed by the FDA to be as effective as their Brand name conterparts. But alas, because drug companies are so good with their advertising, this will never happen.

The generics with the active ingredients developed by major research and development companies still must pay a royalty, which is very high.

Those research and development costs will not vanish.  I have suggested by be subsidized by the world's governments;  pool the money together, based on consumption, and the USA citizen would still pay less.

Someone has to pay for the R&D costs, and Canada will not allow its citizens to.  Consequently, the drug companies pass those costs onto Americans.

It is fair to ask Canadians to help pay for those R&D costs.

Generic drugs don't happen until the intellectual property rights for brand name drugs run out.  Just because Lipitor, for example, is popular doesn't mean you can copy it, call your version of the drug generic and then sell it.

That is a great point!!

If more Americans learned, or understood, why their pharmaceutical prices were so high, similar to the bankers hoarding money, I think they would demand change.

But it is a combination of "complex" areas such as economics, finance, treaties, foreign relationships, subsidized medicines, and even more!

Just a question, How long does a drug company take to recoup their R & D costs for that particular dug? or perhaps better phrase what time frame do they require the costs to be recouped?

Good question, and it will depend on the particular drug.

Some drugs are huge sellers.  Others, though really great at treating disease, are not very profitable.

Many R&D projects never come to fruition.  We should bail-out the pharmaceutical companies.  In fact, I think the whole world should since they benefit from it.  Direct subsidies to drug companies - I support.

Sometimes it amazes these companies are profitable.

You hope, really, for a huge hit.

My portfolio risky stuff is nanotechnology and drug companies.

I am hoping for a new hit, or product, or drug or device, etc.

I understand that not all drugs have generic counterparts, but many do and consumers have a choice to purchase the generic drugs at lower costs, but many choose not to do so ... but with that I am digressing from the real topic of the R&D cost recovory. because that obiously is not a solution to that.

What do you think the subsidies should look like?

You can thank the pervious Canadian liberal governments for the lack of Canadian spending. Thankfuly we now have a Conservitive government that sees the importance of a vibrant military and has thus been increacing Canada's Military spending.

I mentioned an international consortium of the 30 OECD to pay, at least, or contribute, to the R&D budgets of the major pharmaceutical companies.

It will not happen, do not worry.  But innovation requires seed money for that seed to nurture and grow.

The stock market bubble, e.g., in which companies did not show profits because they could not; they were still writing software and finding buyers.  It needed money.  Same with pharmaceuticals;  money is needed to develop new drugs, and the costs are largely, primarily the burden of U.S. citizens.

I said, hey, have the U.S. government negotiate prices as well to reduce the costs for Americans so the R&D costs are shared more.
