It might be nothing to get excited about, but there is a new addition to the Collins English Dictionary.

Bothered Much? 'Meh' Is A Word

The preferred response of the apathetic, "meh" is the newest word in the famous lexicon.

The word, defined as "an interjection expressing indifference or boredom", beat off hundreds of others to gain entry.

It has won its place between "megrim" (whose plural means "low spirits") and "meibomian" ("the large sebaceous glands of the human eyelid") thanks to generating a surprising amount of enthusiasm among lexicographers.

Cormac McKeown, head of content at Collins Dictionaries, said: "This is a new interjection from the US that seems to have inveigled its way into common speech over here.

"It was actually spelled out in The Simpsons when Homer is trying to prise the kids away from the TV with a suggestion for a day trip.

"They both just reply 'meh' and keep watching TV; he asks again and Lisa says 'We said MEH! - M-E-H, meh!'

Publisher HarperCollins said that the word had been chosen from terms suggested by the public for inclusion in the dictionary's 30th anniversary edition, to be published next year.

The dictionary will define "meh" as an expression of indifference or boredom, or an adjective meaning mediocre or boring.

Examples given by the dictionary include "I feel a bit meh about the whole thing" and "The Canadian election was so meh."

The dictionary's compilers said the word originated in North America and spread through the Internet.

Amazing how we always manage to invent words that fill a void for lack of an expression.  Good to know that word is now official.

It's not a word it's a glorified grunt.

Perhaps theres a direct correlation between the dumbing down of MMOs and the dumbing down of language therein?

I expect in 50 years, the longest word gamers will throw out there will be no more than 4 letters long.

It seems with every year that passes the mediums we communicate with become simpler and simpler or is that more refined? I prefer to use the term dumbed down.

It's not just happening in language it's happening everywhere including gaming.

Abbreviations like LOL , BRB, LMAO , TTFN start filtering into language. ( come on how many of you know someone that not only types LOL but you have actually heard them say LOL instead of laughing)

Terms like Pwnd, noob, STFU  get there own prized placement in the new edition of your favorite dictionary?

I do hope not.

The day that they put  "L337"  in the dictionary is the day I will put a gun in my mouth and pull the trigger.

Another peeve of mine is "NAH" for NO.  I expect it will be "approved" soon.

I agree, doesn't qualify as a word in my book.  And I'm pretty sure I used it, or something very close to it before the Simpsons did.  Groening must have said it himself or heard someone else say it and decided to put it in his show.
