Are there any where you compete for territory?  Yes.

However, I don't know enough about those to tell you.  Sorry

Don''t Panic!!!!

Persistant territory control? I only know of a few...

  • WAR - but from what I hear, people are not doing all that much RvR which I find odd. Even the PCGamer review cited that. Community - flavor of the month type. As soon as something else releases they will flock away....wait, I think WotLK is pretty much doing that.
  • Lineage 2 - Fight for castle control which also gives town control and taxation benefits. Has a stagnate and slowly declining community.
  • EVE - Need a star system? Invade. Healthy sized and active community
  • Planetside - dunno how many people actually still play this. Looks like a dead game.
  • DAoC - again, pretty much a dead game.
  • Piratess of the Burning Sea - national factions fight for control of ports. I think this one pretty much was dead on arrival.

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head. (minus any F2P which many have some sort of territory control aspect dunno if any of them are any good though.)

Playing: City of Heroes, Lord of the Rings
Favorite Games: Lineage 2,World of Warcraft, DAoC, AC, Ryzom
Tried (Meh list): Everquest 2, Tabula Rasa, Hellgate, Warhammer(beta) SWG, DDO, RFO, FFXI, PotBS, EVE, Vanguard
Waiting for: Fallen Earth, Global Agenda, All Points Bulletin (APB)

Good list. I like MMORPGs where you can take over territory. I wish we would see an MMORPG where you can take over territory like you can in EVE, only on the ground instead of in Space.

I played some WAR, and I can't say for everyone else, but for me it worked like this. You want to do open world RvR, but it needs to be organized. I wasn't that high level, and run to the open world RvR, but there's no one around.

But with WAR you can do instanced RvR at any level. The game bumps up your stats so everyone can fight in instanced PvP scenarios. Well, with no one around in open world RvR, I just jumped into a scenario for some fun quick instanced PvP. But if everyone starts doing that, then no one is around in open world PvP, which means anyone trying it will find the area empty. So they jump into a scenario....

Eve is only one with true territory control.

There are various games that have some kind of mechanic for fighting over and possibly assigning "control".

But Eve is the only one where you can actually control in non-contrived ways.  Too bad its Excel Spreadsheets in space.

For example EvE is the only game where you can truiy lay seige to a system.  And by lay seige I mean weaken an emplacement by denying it resources.  An attacking force can conievably control all entry and exit points to a system and deny the ships in that system resupply and thus thier guns could run out of ammo and their point defense system could run out of fuel
