Banning me, only makes me stronger.

I think a better analogy would be that standard MMO's are like books. You go from chapter to chapter, when you get to the end, the developer sometimes add's new contents/chapters to keep you hooked. You get attached to being spoon fed and living in someone else's story.

The idea of having to think for themselves, or loosing precious loot scares people. Loot is junk, go back to your first mmo, all your uber loot is trash now, and none of your friends play anymore. All you have is memories of experiences. That's what DarkFall brings, experiences, the kind you  can't get from farming 200 hours for epic fail.

I'll tell you what epic loot is. It's standing over the corpse of the guy who tried to knife you in the back, and dry looting the SoB.

Do you see what sort of attachment with your character in Darkfall where nothign you have really means anything (equipment you worked hard for taken at the drop of a hat, skills that will just degrade if not used.. )

What sort of long term attachment does that foster?  And with out that attachment.. doesn't that just make Darkfall a run of the mill Shooter, a kin to Counter-Strike?

Thoughts?

This is quite a silly post actually. It shows how shallow mmos actually are when the only things people can feel attached to are the items they are carrying. Sorry but not all of us see things in such simplistic terms.

1) this isn't WoW.  you won't be "working hard for your gear"...gear is not very important.  step away from the gear grinding carebearness and try and understand that.

2) skills do not degrade very fast.  its not like you go to the bathroom and bam you come back and you cant use a sword.  If i make a char that is heavy armor and all sword skills....and thats all i ever do then im never going to worry about skills degrading.

calling df a kin to a fps is just ridiculous and im not going to call you a troll but you are clearly misinformed.  post history shows your intentions.

So.. this is planet side??

And.. No.. You have FPS style shooting.. aiming and the like.. Sorry.. but.. giving me a house and something to make an RPG does not make.

It's not about GEAR it's about attachment to your character.. GEAR or EFFORT that you made for that GEAR is what makes you attached.  From my understanding.. the game is going to be "Log in, kill goblins, get lootz, equip lootz, get ganked by 5 man, rinse, repeat"  Wow.. sounds fucking awesome..

That's compare that to say.. Quake.. "login, have gear, shoot enemy, get dead, respawn, repeat"..

Where's the sense of adventure that RPG's are known for?   Since I am so "ill informed".. enlighten me.. Tell me how that's a point for the QUESTS that I will be doing.. Tell me how this ISN'T like a FPS when it comes to the MEAT of the game.. Really.. I want to know..

Yep i cringe when I reap OPs like this.  Makes you want to pull even harder for games like DF, MO, or anything that breaks the mold of the WoW clones.

"The monsters are tough. I was looking for a challenge, but these things are just too damn smart." -DF Beta Tester

"If people were dismissing it, then they wouldn't be talking about it. The well-meaning gamers root for efforts that try to raise the bar. So who's left? It's so easy being a skeptic." -Tasos

It's funny.. you have that in grained feeling that I'm some sort of WoW reject..

Get a clue, dude..  I was playing AC up until a few months ago.. when I tried to play WAR.. which was a joke.. But.. well.. since I've posted in those two forums (WoW, and WAR) I must be some sort of WoW reject..

And you blame me for "being illinformed".. tsk tsk..

That reminds me of something I've read quite a while ago.

There is a very reputable adventure and rpg reviewer/reporter in one greek magazine. He has been around since the Colossal Cave Adventure, the Infocom years, the Akalabeth,  Wizardry, Bards Tale etc etc.

I remember his review of a game. Near the end he exclaimed, "this is the best role playing game I have ever played". That game was Thief, a fps.

How much role playing can you do in a game where you can't hit someone of your own race, for whatever reason, because he insulted you, because you want something he has, or just because you want to?

Or in a game that takes you by the hand for every little step you want to take? Where you eventualy become the same thing as every other person of your class or race or archetype?

Don't get stuck on rulesets and interfaces. Those are ways, flawed most of the time, of translating role playing in the computer medium.

Of course, I'm not saying that DFs way will be the best, but I'm sure the freedom they're trying to put in is a much more better soil for role playing than any other game that's out.
