This. The devil is in the details. Games like War and AOC had some great 'themes' overall. Pvp with a purpose.... yet they flopped because the details just sucked. Darkfall has announced some really interesting 'themes'...but games are won or lost in the most minute of details. If death is going to be hugely punished, then you better make sure classes are VERY balanced and you have servers nearly perfect. Getting killed by an OP class or because of untimely lag spikes will be the end of a 'hard death' system. All that said, I still think darkfall is 75% vaporware. 1 video, 2 actual players that can write about it?
Same thing with Vanguard. Great themes, poor implementation. |

Because it's the last bastion of hope in a sea of over rated theme park MMOs for something that will be truly different. Now I said different not new as just about all of Darkfall's features have been in games before. The only thing new about it is it's the first time all of these features have been in one game. I have been watching Darkfall for a while now and will definitely play it if and when it releases. I for one don't expect it to be a WoW killer of even anything close as that is just unreasonable. I do expect that if it delivers on it's promises it will have a very strong niche following which is just fine. Darkfall will not be for everyone but it will give those of us that have been looking for a worthwhile PvP sandbox something to play finally.

If Darkfall is our "Last Bastion of Hope" I think I would rather just kill myself now.

You would be surprised how few people care about what you have to say. |
The "why" is pretty simple: At this point in the MMO timeline, Darkfall is seen as the bastion of hope for PvP players. People have always needed one -- something to look forward to when they're not satisfied with what's out there now. AoC and WAR were the bastions of hope, but since they're out already, anyone not currently satisfied with them have only Darkfall to look towards. It's both ironic and very sad that it's got to be Darkfall though -- it's almost certainly either vaporware, or a game in development so long that it won't push the boundaries of the genre any further than Roma Victor or A Tale in the Desert. |

I think one difference is that the hype seems to be coming from people who see \ learn about the game. Darkfall itself hasn't really been hyping themselves so much. They are actually pretty quiet only saying stuff once in a blue moon. Also it seems like they are really taking the time to do things properly instead of stirring up a bunch of hype. |

I know I've tried them all and they are all the same damn game with different pretty blinking lights. PvP is an absolute joke in most of them if they have PvP at all. Darkfall will fill a niche that has been sadly overlooked by all mainstream developers. They all seem to be after that shiny brass ring that Blizzard has dangled out in front of them. Sooner or later they will realize that no matter how much they try it will always be just out of their reach. Until that time we will only see rehashed theme parks that have 0% originality to them. Darkfall is the only thing on the horizon that could possibly break out of this dismal pattern that the MMO industry seems to be stuck in.
Edit: Oh and just so you know I too have my doubts about Darkfall. I'm just willing to give it a chance as unlike many on here I won't prejudge a game I've never even played. I'm not trying to say that Darkfall will be the greatest PvP game ever as I just don't know that and neither does anyone else here that hasen't played the game yet. I'm just willing to give them the chance to succeed or fail with their game and not make sweeping judgements about a game that I've never played.

So since you joined MMORPG.com in '06 you've never stated an opinion about a game that wasn't released yet? |

Awaiting for a skill base game with consequences. |
There's enough carebear solo mmo instant gratification games on the market and we need a niche MMO with a harsh world and meaningful PvP.I don`t need them to reinvent the wheel but simply give us a dynamic world. I have hope that they will remain true to their vision if /when the game is released. |
