Yeah the reason i left wow is because it has too many expansions which first killed the game when TBC came out all the world pvp was destroyed and then the influx on kids drew me further away from it.

Played: Archlord, GW, RFO, Knight Online, Silkroad, WoW, Rappelz, shaiya, Flyff, Fury, Space Cowboy, Perfect World Beta, Rakion, sword of the new world, Linage 1 and 2

Playing: Runes of Magic (Beta)

Because intellectually most people are lazy. It's easier to call everything a WoW clone and sneer at others  than actually discuss the merits and difficiencies of individual games. You'll notice people compare things to WoW but almost never contrast them unless it's an offhand jab. "It's WoW with sieges."  "It's WoW with ships."  "It's lords of the WoW."  Even though the game in question has many different facets of it's own.

oh come on.

Before wow the big flagship game was EQ which had 300-400k subs and it was the game to beat.  WoW took the best of EQ and made a perfect storm-hodgepodge of accessibility, ease and eye candy available to the masses.

The result is millions and millions of people are playing.  Intelluctually most people are lazy? What a comment to make.  Intelluctually companies are going to copy the guy whos making a billion dollars a year !

And before WoW everything was compared to? EQ.  I will bet most people calling things WoW clones couldn't name five defining things about WoW much less the game they're compaing to WoW.  Everything released isn't a clone of  WoW just as WoW wasn't a clone of EQ. There are differences.  I'll give you an example. How many people sneering at WoW know WoW has skills that advance with use. That's supposed to be a samdbox game defining characteristic according to people on these forums. Yet WoW has it.  Is WoW a UO clone?  Of course not but people will tell you the two games have nothing in common and games nothing like WoW are WoW clones. There are more things to do in WoW than most games that are called sandbox games yet they'll tell you WoW is completely linear. They're intellectually lazy. They don't think they just spout the party line.

Even sandboxes have fundamental rules such as; "Don't eat the cat poop, you'll die."

Because it's the largest MMO outside of asia.

And probably because the average WoW player is a 12 to 14 year old boy that doesn't know much or any of the MMO:s from the golden days.

The age stereotype has been proven wrong time and time again, but people still delight in throwing around numbers with no data to back them up.

With that said, aside from the false age bracket, you have the right idea. WoW is the largest MMO, and a large majority of its playerbase has played nothing but WoW and have nothing else to compare new games to.

It's not a stereotype, adults are a minority in WoW.

Can you prove?

then why is it that at every blizzcon, The BC store linups, the WOTLK store linups, and all that where around  60%  adults 21 and over, 30% young adults in early teens to 20, and very few little children 10 and under.  When i went with my friend to the WOTLK release night the line had about 200 people, and i saw nothing almost all adults or teenagers at least in HS.

Dont even try giving the "Well im getting it for my son crap" If any son of a parent played WOTLK, they would come with there parent to the release, Hell i even talked with alot of the people in the line, they all play WOW, my BOSS and 3 out of 7 co-workers play WOW... WoW is very mainstream, and it has invaded the workplace, and i am afraid to say that the majority is likely over 18. But than again, almost ALL mmo's have a playerbase around the "15 - 30" age zone.

no sigs

PRE-CU STILL LIVES!

because wow is the toilet flushing the MMO industry down.  (warning...rant incoming_)

It has opened the gates for a flood of simplified, cartoony, brainless e-sport garbage MMO titles. A new one comes out every few months...modeled after wow, trying to mimic it's "success"....and then fails miserably.

Eventually, companies are going to stop financing MMO development as a result of the high risk investment.

So..as a result of every new MMO trying to do "what wow did", instead of just making a good game for once, the whole MMO industry is going down the tubes.

WoW is brainless. The crafting system is shit, the PVP system is shit, you don't even need to read the damn quests...just connect the goddamn dots as fast as you can so you can spam one attack in an instanced pvp battleground.

Other games try to mimic this simplified shit, and so new games have little or no crafting, instanced pvp, simplified quest systems that all but lead you from point to point with with spotlights, the same lame-ass talent system (because skills and attributes and character development are too fucking complex), and color-coded "uber lootz".

Stop trying to turn the MMO genre into nothing but FPS games with loot.

I remember back in 1999, folks kept asking me if I was stockpiling food. I always answered, "No, I'm stockpiling ammo and making a list of people who are stockpiling food"

That is bullshit, I rarely see anybody in the lines who look normal enough to be married and have children who are old enough to play WoW. And i have never been on a Ventrilo/TS, or guild that has mostly kids in it. 99% of guilds in WoW are filled with 16+ And i have only seen 1 or 2 kids in a ventrilo room and they got kicked for being singing to freaking much.

WoW has a mostly late teen to adult playerbase.

I dont defend WoW, but i defend obvious facts, and since there are no facts on wow "age base" Then we go with what we see, and majority of people do not see a bunch of 5 yearolds, they see a bunch of 25 yearolds screaming and bitching
