Will they ever design/build an MMO without the grind and levels of todays modern MMO's? A game where classes all have access to the best gear at the start and the focus is fun factor? During the early ages of MMO's you had games like 10-Six, or the WW2 games that you logged in and picked a class and played.

The game was designed not around the classes in general but around the game objective itself. In the early days of fantasy based MMO's levels and ranks meant something. Now they mean nothing because everybody can be max rank defeating the purpose of having ranks/levels.

Any new games in development or released that are built around the game and not around the mindless grind and level process?

Ok. You start the game max level. You can kill every mob in the game. You already have all the best gear.

Now, you walk up to an NPC and he says, go save teh Princess.

Uh...why?

Let's see what happens. If you save the Princess, she's not really saved, because the NPC will just ask the next Player to save her. Plus, you gain no xp (you're already max) and you gain no gear (you already have the best gear).

I guess you could walk around and look at the world before logging out.

Simple comparision. World War 2 Online.. You get in your tank and go after enemy territory, you take it or lose it.. MMO without he RPG added on. You don't kill mobs only human opponents in a game that has distinct objectives . A game built around the game and not around the level, grind and gear like todays time sinks that are boring us all senseless.

People take mmo''s way to seriously

I guess there will one day be one, as for me i do like charecter progression, something to play towards, watching the mechanics of the game and the stories unfold as you go along, indeed i do not like games in which every quest and task is kill this over there, I prefer the ''grind'' to be barely noticable by a nice story arch you progress on so that you feel as if you are part of the storyline learning the lore and legends as you go along, I think you may wish to play a shoot em up mmofps, where the story and content doesnt matter and you can start at max level and jump into pvp, like guildwars where you can start at max lvl for pvp, but it gets utterly boring, at least for me with no storyline or anything, but thats my tastes, I play mmorpg's for fun and escapism, if i dont feel like i have become part of the story, or there is no story it doesnt hold my interests.

playing eq2 and two worlds

No because there's no such thing. MMORPG's emulate real world life in a fantasy world. Real life is a grind and so are MMORPG's. Deal with it or play something else or die.

No! NO! NOOOO!!!

Real life is not grind, real life is about living, because you have a finite subscription time and after that, there is no more.

Real life is about enjoying every moment, not grinding mindlessly after and engame that at the end is not that good.

Thats why people are so antisocial lately, they treat life as they treat wow.

I see where you're going. You want a FPS game, only with RPG combat instead. You jump in, kill, get killed, respawn, kill some more, get killed, your fingers get tired, you log out.

It might be fun.

I wouldn't pay a monthly fee for it though, Just like I don't pay a monthly fee for Call of Duty or Battlefield 2142.

I'd say Guild Wars is as close to this you can get or you would want. The leveling is easy enough and insignificant that it's enough not to be a chore but walks you through the process of a learning curve and gives a sence of achievment while completing the relevant campaign.

The fun factor is very much the key to playing the game rather than must XP or grind w/e. The only grinds are the ones you want to take for Titles or fancy looking gear that is at your own descresion as it will give you no advantage other than self satisfaction or acheivement.

Pain is fear leaving the body..

Sounds like you already have what yo want with WW Online. Why are you pining for something else?

City of Heroes/Villians has the enhancements which could be direction for levelless games. You could pick up abilities or perhaps even unlock them after satisfying some hidden requirement.

MMOs have to recoup the millions of dollars they invested in by keeping the player in the game. If the game is all about take over some objectives, how long would it last? Especially if the only reward is jumping up the leaderboards?

I will admit I havent played any military MMOs so I do not know what it is like. I assume there is some currency involved to purchase or upgrade your gear? Completing missions = currency reward?

Or is it when you log in for the first time can you go anywhere you want with the equipment you are given?
