This site is a mirror reflection of the rather varying and often, no offense, ignorant views of the vocal MMORPG community at large.  Which is a fairly small subset of the overall community.

A large portion of this site does not believe in pay to play games (read the forums, or comments) so Free to Play games tend to get higher ratings than they deserve.  So when a half decent one comes along, like Atlantica (which if oyu haven't played, does actually have some really innovative ideas in it) it's naturally going to get a stronger showing than many pay to play games.

This community, at least the vocal part of it, is also biased against WoW for a number of reasons, so WoW tends to get poorer scores then the millions of subscriptions it has would otherwise say.

Lastly this community has almost always been more interested in what's next and almost always found what just came out to be nowhere near matching the hype.  It's a cycle here, games get hyped to hell before they launch here and after they launch those that feel burned or just couldn't believe the hype come make their case about how bad a game is.  Example: The rather vocal community that thinks Warhammer is a failure.  If that many box sales and that many subscriptions (even if it's as low as 200k) is a failure, then I'd sure like to fail that badly.

The admin is right, people are more likely to spew negative feedback here than positive, it's the nature of the MMO internet and it's very much in evidence here, away from heavily moderated and controlled official/fan forums.  Afterall, there are few such places where those who detest a game or a company can come and just spew their vitriol as much as they can here.

Now if you've managed to read this far before popping a blood vessel none of this is a knock on MMORPG.com.  It is what it is, a particular viewpoint of MMO's fromt he community, sans a lot of heavy interference from publishers or review press.  It is often a counter point to positive media and sometimes even a refreshing discouse against the negative tripe.  As always with the internet, reader beware.  No one who posts here has much interest in being non-biased and if you can't figure that out, you probably shouldn't read the opinions or reviews here.

Gaming is life...

- The max score any game can get is still 10.  Again, the very top game is what sets the curve multiplier.  If a game has a score of 10 then the curve is 1.0 (no change).  If a game out there has a 9.5 the curve multiplier is 1.0263 (and things will change very slightly).  The point in this curve is that it does not make sense for NO game out of all 230+ titles to be higher than a 6/10.

- The curve cannot change the order of things.  The order of the games will remain identical before and after the curve.

- We would never do anything to change the scores ourselves.  Most games don't have a lot of hype votes,  and all the top games are within .01 of each other - so reall all it takes is a cool video feature about a game and the community gives it a dozen high votes and everything changes in the rankings.

So nope I don't think Aion deserves it at all. At least not this way.

The point is btw that it's not just Aion, but 40 other games as well.

Again, you cannot compare hype scores to ratings for released games.  Yes, we let you sort the list that way but think about it - these games are not released yet so obviously no one has played them yet so the score is not setting the quality of the product but rather the level of excitement about the game that they *hope* it will be.

If you like to look at the entire game list as a top ranking list I recommend you do it with the "Released Games" list and then the "Games in Development" list using the left menu selectors.  Only then will you be comparing apples and apples so to speak.  Example Below:

Ranking for released games: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/show/released/sCol/finalRank/sOrder/desc

Ranking for games under development: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/show/development/sCol/hype/sOrder/desc

Agreed with everything, but Aion is P2P.

Not actually true.  Assume you had these scores:

3.5
4.0
4.5
5.5
6.0
6.5

After the curve you would have:

4.41
5.04
5.67
6.93
7.56
8.25

Sure if 10 games were all 6.5 before they will all be 8.25 now, but when you look at all 100+ games in development you see a big spreading taking place.

Let's face it - anger outweighs joy when it comes to this community.  Using a positive-only curve helps bring these scores back into reality.  Setting hype aside, if we did not have the curve on the released games no game would have a score higher than about 6.2 - which I don't think that is very accurate that no MMORPG has earned better than a "C" grade.

Admin is absolutely right, this is an angry forum. They raised the scores to a more "glass half full" type of mood. I like the new system, good job MMORPG.com, your work is much appreciated.

ps.. ignore the haters, they always find something to bark about lol.

Well, I think alot of people do make comparisons, as to go with a released game or to wait for the unrelesased.

With the hype games we don't know but we have indications. With the released games, they don't allways get a full exploration and people still rate them, so that's not accurate as well.

If an unreleased game is on top, it should indicate that people (mmorpg.com people anyway) are anticipating this game more than valuing an already released game.

Ah well, it's your site. You decide. What can I do but moan.

Also take note that the two scoring types Rating (released  games) and Hype (unreleased) use totally different voting options.  Hype is just 1-10 how excited are you about this title? Ratings is a multi-part score based on seperate scores for gfx, sound, role play, etc.

These things are geniunely different scores about genuinely different things (ie games you can play and games you can't play yet).

The reason you saw the unreleased appear with similar scores to the released games is we just started curving hype scores.  We have always curved ratings for released games, well at least every since a few months of opening our doors so to speak.

Still wondering about my question from page one.
