Point 1 is right on.  It has already been mentioned that wide-spread instant transportation is a huge factor in ruining local economies.  Can you think of any others?

Point 2 as you said might be something to try and fix current game economies, but I don't know how effective it would be.  Every fix just seems to lead to another.  In a natural and dynamic economy supply and demand would be based on actual availability of items, crafters, and the logistics to transport things.   Supply and Demand would be self balancing and since markets would be local part of the game would be becoming familiar with your surroundings.  Who is to say you are getting ripped off if you decide that what you are spending for the item is worth having it for.  (ie. you know how hard it was to earn those copper coins and you know why you need to buy that back pack so you can logically determine if the value is worth while to you).

I am a bit confused about the statement that RV has a true economy.  As I understand it ses can be purchased with out of game currency, thus making game currency appear as if out of nowhere.  I can see this getting out of hand very quickly unless there are some limits.  No, I would advocate having all resources already present in the game world, and when you eliminate 100% secure storage of items this takes away from the out of game value of selling and buying in real world currency.

But either way, all we can do is push forward, create some simulations, and experiment.

Well yeah, that part of RV is the part that screws it up IMO.  They have in place all the rest tho, where they could have a good and balanced economy.

problem is they want people to buy ses, so they let the prices of items go through the roof so that you would almost have to buy ses to get some items...thats bad imo.

And thats where #2 would come in to keep those prices down and still allow you to buy ses... and yeah I have posted that they need to limit the ammount of ses you can buy per month but they don't want that either lol.  IMO romans should have a low monthly payment and recieve a monthly salary from rome.  Barbarians would be free to play but would live off the land and the romans... (creating that strife between the two) Romans would have plenty of NPC protection and laws, barbs would be total anarchy, a free for all.

And yeah full loot and destruction needs to be in place to create constant demand.

But this is kinda getting off topic lol, I posted tons on this in RV forums here and on their site.

Good thread and needed ,the economy is a big part of creating the type of community driven game that would appease the masses without the need for senseless grinds, pointless timesinks and meaningless tasks/quests.(can tell how I feel about those huh?lol)

As for things ruining the economy, I can speak for RV from experiance, time needed to craft was a killer IMO.  Realistic is cool but can be taken too far, like they did.  hardly anyone wants to craft since it takes so danm long it's almost like having a second job that you pay for lol.  So the economy is at a slow trickle if not a halt. Well that coupled with the prices they charge....

Your idea to make a real world-like economy in a game is a wonderful idea, although it is a daunting task. I say this because all MMOs constantly change. From overall population of players and their individual levels must be taken into consideration if you are to complete this task. But your suggestiong I think will ultimately erradicate items/material/gold cheats that most MMOs suffers. I am not sure about how to go about designating resources that are renewable and limited, since a good game should probably has equal oppurtuniy for players in the game. It would be kinda new if we are going to see a MMO that has socio-economic division, lolz. I think your idea would be an excellent addition to a MMO.
