The enemy is so dumb! They believe that WE are the enemy! - A famous orc commander.

I know I never even bother to try Jumpgate or EvE.

I have no interest in PvP, whatsoever.  Will there be any PvE server?  Will my gaming be as weak as if I play on Gaheris or would it be interesting?

PvP has this unavoidable flaw that you always have at least half the players failing...in a game where everything is about progression, to me this is just unacceptable.  I don't mind if peoples are PvPing and happy, but, I will always need a surrounding safe from players.

PINUTBUTTER!

Before I start, would you like this to be a PvE vs PvP discussion?

Just to warn you, those can get VERY long and often include faul language from both sides. (on the other hand, this forum could use a bit more activity).

Apart from that, I think it's all a matter of the quantity of players. Now seen as JG didn't grow like WoW, I bet they predict a medium size of player-crowd.

So my GUESS is that at release no pure PvE server will be available.

But you DO know that JG uses security levels right? you could fly across the galaxy using long but safe routes, or short and dangerous routes.

They have discussed stuff like this at the official forums. Afaik, the only reason they will shard servers is due to population, not for separate rule set servers. I sort of feel the same as you, Anofalye. I have never enjoyed PVP, but I am willing to deal with it as long as there is a deep story and PVE experience.

The PVP servers for the games I have played were insane. General chat channels and forums were filled with immature children yelling, screaming and insulting each other. Claims of cheating and hacking occured constantly, and even if this hacking and cheating never occurred, it did nothing but create a completely negative gaming environment. Why would I want to be a part of that? I just want a deep game with an amazing story, where I can work together with friends to overcome things I couldn't do solo.

From the devs speaking,  each server will have PvE and PvP areas, the PvE being in the "core" systems and PvP further out.

So far, they haven't said how they are going to deal with players shooting each other in the "reg"/PvE areas, a subject of much conjecture. They could go Eve's method and warp in an unstoppable police force in seconds to blast the offender out of the sky. But this could be bad if you have NPC's fighting a player(s) and a stray player shot hits another player (Eve does not have to worry about this except for the rarely used smartbombs, which are....not very well named).

The simplest solution is just to have the shots do no damage, but that's harder to "explain" away. Some games use "suppression gas" but they usually require buttons to begin attacking, and you target specific foes.

Will be interesting to see how they do it. But they have to have PvE only areas if they want to have any kind of success. JGC proved that, Shadowbane, UO, etc... Open PvP is the fastest way to have a small playerbase.

Ok...perhaps a good explanation is in order

Here is how JGE system works

You have regulated space and non-regulated space.

Mid sectors are regulated and as you spread towards "unexplored" zones it slowly becomes unregulated.

In regulated space you can be marked "peaceful"

If another player kills a "peaceful" four things will happen. First he will be marked fugitive and have BOUNTY placed on his head (ouch) , npc police forces in the area will start to chase him , he will be marked "agressive" and everyone will be able to shoot and loot him , and finally he will lose FACTION points (which is like exp in JGE)

In one word. PVP will not happen there withouth a very very good reason...

And more

NetDevil said that they want to attract PVE crowd, and the game is in no way PVP oriented.

in their words

It is PVE game that slowly evolves in PVP game

I guess when you think of 'failing' you mean that there will always be a winner and loser. I think its that perception that is wrong. I am not sure what criteria you use to judge 'failure' and 'success' but I bet if you applied the same measures to entirely PVE games there will be similar outcomes.

Its a shame PvP has been tarnished by poorly thought out game mechanics and half arsed designs. I can understand why it has left a sour taste for many that have had bad experinces. The first gameco that gets it right I think could have a monster hit on there hands. Ingenuity of players is always likely to provide a greater challenge and more fun than killing mobs with ever greater stats. Roll in some tools for real (player controled) polotics and economies and you have a winner.

Funnily enough some of the MUDS had all this stuff but a lot got left out and dumbed down as MMORPG's evolved.

I will have to see how they implement PvE in a PvP game. The rules seems to be ok but I guess you can't tell whether there are loopholes until the game is out.

Plus there will be content NOT available for people who will only be interested in PvE. Sigh ...

I guess I will have to wait for Blizzard to make a casual friendly, no-PvP (at least optional) sci-fi mmorpg.

Thanks for the explanation.

I am bored at the space-theme anyway.

I won't be playing a game designed that way, PvE is NOT a second-class citizenship.  So I will focus my PvE-server argument in a game I care more about...WAR!  :P

Happy gaming. :)
