I switched to DX10 and it set my shader model to 2...very strange. I set it back to 3.0; but does anyone have any idea why the default would be 2? Should I put it back to 3 with a 8800GT?

happened to me also i put it back to 3.0 8800 gts

Better performance with shader 2. So they probably set it up to give the most performance as default.

actually SM 3.0 will run better than SM 2.0 as it's more efficient, especially on SM 3.0 capable cards.

The pen is mightier than the sword if the sword is very short, and the pen is very sharp.

I noticed on mine when I clicked the default 'High' setting it turned the bloom off.

I guess they're really going for performance with  the default settings. Then those with strong systems can set shaders to 3.0 and bloom ON.  Seems like a good strat - helps keep the newbs from whining, and allows people with high end systems to get the most out of it.

Absolutely no way real DX10 graphics are possible on SM 2. I'm guessing it's becuase you can choose the DX10 setting but atm it's still DX9

There is no DX10 at launch, you can select it but it won't enable anything.:
