I played VSoH at release and was highly disappointed, as I'm sure many of you can relate to.  However, I've been hearing good things about the game lately and I was considering giving it another shot.  Is there any news of a trial?

There has been no specific date set. Sony is only saying in the next few months. According to Silius (Lead Dev) they want to make sure that the Trial Island is running with no problems, as they do not want a repeat of what happened at release. I am quite sure this is their utmost priority atm. If Trial Island fails, word of mouth will not be enough to sustain the game and more Sony employees will be looking for new jobs.
