Darkfall looks very similar to Mortal Online on paper.  I'm just curious, which one began development first?  Mortal Online supposively started in 2002, but didn't really get going till 2005.  I think these 2 MMOs could put a huge dent in the MMO community, however, it would appear that they would be in strict competition with eachother.  Any thoughts?

The only difference between a Troll and a Fanboi is which side of the fence they stand on.

I'd go out on a limb and say something to the effect of:

Most the Darkfall Community is equally as enthralled with Mortal Online.

If I was a DF fanatic, I'd be registered on both.

Correction - Mortal Online would put a huge dent into Darkfall.

It's because of things like this that I say Darkfall failed already.

I'm a big fan of MO, can't wait for it, not so much Darkfall because although I will be playing it if and when it releases I'm not at all confident that it will be released  this year or even at all.

I will bet DF began development first, but does that mean MO is a clone? No, they are very different. MO was also just announced like a month or two ago.

Darkfall started development in 2001.

I went to the MO web site today, first time in a long time.  The movie was awesome - too bad the in-game graphics never look like the movies! If MO is for real, and not a Darkfall spoof (which is what I thought when I first heard about it) then I think it will make an interesting MMO*.

So i am. But in all honestly.. Mortal Online just licenced the UT3 Engine 2007.. so it is a very long way in development.. or let it say in other words.. Mortal Online is now there, where DF was 2002/2003.

Just think about how much they have to modify the UT3 Engine to work probably in a open world design, if they are even able to do it.. because in all honestly the UT3 Engine is not really the best engine for a mmo project with a huge persistent world. Or they go the AoC way with a lot of instances and zones.. but i really  hope they dont do it.. and as much as i have read, they will not do it.

But anyway, noone should expect a release within the next 3 years. But it is a very interesting project and i am anticipate a lot of them.. and hopefully they will be able to pull it off.. Damn.. the same i could say about DF.

Sometimes it is a curse that just small underfunded independent dev studios really try to evolve the virtual world design, and bring the old UO design one step forward.

You don't know what you're talking about. The UT3 engine is very capable of building MMORPG's. They're not  the only ones who licensed it for that purpose.

You're logic is completely flawed if you think that it would take a dev studio longer or the same amount of time to build a game using something like Unreal 3 tech as it would for a company who had to build their own untested , unproven engine from scratch.

If anything it would shave off years of work for the Unreal 3 tech users.

There is no amount of defense that anyone can throw up for the joke of a project that is Darkfall.

You're actually kind of off... it takes the same amount of time to get programmers up to snuff on how to rip apart many aspects of U3 to make it capable of running a MMO, as it would to create a stripped down engine that can run a MMO.  Once they get up to snuff on those aspects, they get to start thinkering with them and rewriting those... occassionally they'll break a few things and have to backtrack a few steps, try a different route.  All the while, they haven't started working on your game.

Trust me, I've been part of a team that did it.

As nice as Unreal3 LOOKS, there's some serious "under the hood" problems that, while manageable, are a complete pain in the ass (ever hear of Too Human?  How about the game Assassin's Creed?).

That said, for 750k+ USD, I could fund my own studio for another 2+ years...
