Why?
There's no innovation in MMOs anymore.  AoC has 1 slight difference from other MMOs, the combat system.  Other than that, it's very standard fare.

AoC has an interesting combat system, but apart from that it is a far cry from being even standard mmo-like. The only thing it really offers is the combat.

So, with the big name MMOs out of the way... there's no innovation, nobody wants to do a style that seperates itself from others.  That's the lame ass trend since WoW came out with success.

As for innovation and pre-nge swg style mmos.. have you checked out Earthrise? I am daring to get my hopes up about it, it looks promising, with all the features that we all call for.

Will bioware's mmo be a niche sandbox style pre-swg like game? Very unlikely. Why would a big name company make such a product when they are the type of company who wants to make the huge bucks? They will make a generic please-everyone wow-style mmo.

Not to be a downer or anything but what if this "Old Republic" MMO is actually an expansion pack to SWG in a attempt to build hype and bring back more subscribers.  I mean cmon "Legends" and "Saga" sounds like some sort of triligy package that they might ship with new expansion and other previous ones.  Dreaming about a new Starwars MMO just aint gonna happen.  The promised land of MMO's doesnt exist and will never exist.

I really don't understand how "The Old Republic" could be an expansion, since the timeline is set in the age of the Empire.

Yet, it might even be something like "Caverns of Time" in WoW, where you go back in time in instances and relive them.

Now, that is definitley something SOE would do.  Kinda sad.

I just hope it is good.

And alpha classes are terrible. They always start with a risk v. reward scenario, but inevitably, they lower the risk, and then later they have to lower the reward. The whole thing strikes me as unrewarding to a player base.

Again, I hope it is good, I also hope for a classic SWG server too! :)

Alpha classes are the worst idea ever implemented into an MMO.

Uhhh... why exactly?

Because, when you have an alpha class, THAT is the only content people aim for.  If you look at SWG, 95% of the economy practically lived off of people grinding for jedi and such.  It also brings questions of balance issues -- which, ultimately turns into the one class that the developers focus on most.

If you even PLAYED swg, you should realize easily the mistake of adding alpha classes.

Sorry I think I misunderstood what an Alpha class was. Yeah, the unlocking Jedi thing was probably one of the worst ideas ever. I agree completely. I only played SWG in brief spurts. I was originally on the path to be a bounty hunter (my love of Boba Fett and all) and it was really cool how there were so many options and configurations for it, and how to get there. I loved the class/pseudo skill based system.

I quit and came back a while later but that didn't last long. I tried grouping with people but it really failed miserably. I have to say I didn't give the game a good chance that time, because I was so frustrated with dying, and joining a group and having everyone hop on a swoop and leave me behind.

The last time I came back, Jedi had been discovered. Everyone, EVERYONE was mindlessly grinding for their Jedi. The only people who weren't, were bounty hunters. Great. Now my class is played by everyone. There was nothing but BH and Jedi running around everywhere. Didn't even feel a little like Star Wars.

Will this happen? My hopes are high. The companies we're talking about have made their names pushing the envelope (for better or worse.) If it's true that LA pushed for the NGE, then I give it a very high chance that they will also try to break out of the WOW mold.
Will this be like the old SWG? Hard to say. They'll probably try to make a brand new game that no one has seen before.
Obviously, until we get more information, all we can do is speculate....

LA did NOT "push for the NGE." That is the big lie that SOE would have us believe. SWG was a failure pre-CU, largely due to SOE's mismanagement, and LA pushed SOE to improve the game and make it successful.

SOE Lied and made the false claim that it was the design of the game that was the reason people were playing WoW instead; LA foolishly believed them; SOE then came up with the idea of the NGE and PUSHED LA to accept it, making the false claim that THIS would save the game and attract thw WoW customer.

LA then, accepting SOE's falsehoods and bad advice, approved of the change.

It failed miserably because the reason the game was unsuccessful had nothing to do with design, but with SOE's bad management (which continues to this day).

If this is true, the part that I find curious is that six months after the release of the NGE (and all the bad press with it) LA RENEWED Sony's hold on the game. And then LA put out a statement of solidarity with Sony.

This said, I don't work for either company. It's possible these guys at WW3 behind the scenes and playing nicey nice for the cameras.

I guess I'm just not sure what to believe anymore.

That said - I don't think the problem with the original SWG was the Alpha class (the Jedi) but how it was implemented. At first, there was no way to open a Jedi. Then the system was darn near impossible. Then Sony kept (quietly) raising the bar to get the Alpha unlocked. Meanwhile they kept feeding us lies in an attempt to keep us interested. In the end, they ended up dedicating a LOT of their time, energy and resources to the (very rare at first) Alpha class while other classes sucked hard.

I hope the new MMORPG has more than six classes. The first one only had six (Soldier, Scout, something else, Jedi Consul, Jedi Guardian and Jedi Enforcer?). It would be rather limited as an MMORPG.

Argh - I HATE when MMORPGs try to be "story" driven. I hate it when I come across an NPC "You're the only one who can help me..." Yeah, except for the other 1000 players standing here talking to you. "You're the only one who can stop this monster..." Yeah, except for the other 1000 people who killed it. And so on.

Lastly - if we're going to meet "famous characters", I hope it's done cool. One of the aggravating things about the NGE is you meet Han Solo, Boba Fett and all the other major characters in the intro. Man that sucked. I liked the pre CU better you had to run a series of missions before you got to meet the big guys. It felt like you were getting somewhere when you finally earned enough trust to go up to the Emperor's or Jabba the Hutt's throne rooms.

Once they decided to go through with it, LA and SOE formed a unified front. That has nothing to do with what happened BEFORE that decision was made. Jeff Freeman and others, including Dan Rubenfeld, who were there have made it quite clear what happened. This is known stuff -- admitted freely by the participants.

Subs were not as high as they should be. LA told them to make the game successful. Dan, Jeff and their team at SOE came up withe the NGE. They sold the people above them, which includes LA, on the NGE. LA said yes. After that they hanged together.

YOU said "LA PUSHED for the NGE." That's just make-believe, and nothing you said adds any credibility to that false theory.

Namelss people connected with SOE, and fans of SOE, have been spreading this lie for years now, and all evidence says the opposite.

wow this is interesting, especially when you look at this posting about a Resume from a programmer that has a reference to the "Star Wars: Sagas" part:

http://mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/189544

does this mean SONY is making the next star wars MMO????????
