They tell me to, "Get a life." I tell them, "I''m a gamer, I''ve got tons of lives." |
Hello everybody! I plan on playing Final Fantasy very soon, but i have just a few questions I would like some help with. First, could someone help explain class roles ( tank, support, heal, damage, ect...)? Like how hard they are, how much responsibility, how fun they are and whatever else could give me more knowledges to the role and stuff like that. And second, i am the worst at picking classes in any game i play... so could you also give me your thoughts about your job(s)? Thanks for your advice people! ^_^ <(^_^<) <(^_^)> (>^_^)> (dancing kirbys) |

Lets face it, MMOs today are turning into single player console games with a chat box included. |
The reason I suggest Windhurst is that you can farm and sell silk from the crawlers in the Sarutabaruta areas, theres also a repeatable quest in Windy for the rocks they drop. Great way to get goin when you are new to the game. At least imo, if someone has a better plan, by all means, but this one is tried and true. |

Jesus saves. Everyone else takes full damage |
One of the greatest things about FFXI is that you don't have to play, or stick with one job. You can play all the jobs with one character. So the best thing to do is to try them all. |

Start out as either a Mithra Red Mage, Thief or Warrior and your home country to Windurst. |

I can't beleive I just read that. "It takes days and weeks to get to the mid level." How is that a bad thing? The grind is nearly not as bad as in other games. You get experience while partying, meeting new people. That is way better than killing mobs over and over by yourself, imo. Also, to play a new job you just switch over to another job in your mog house. On the same character. No need to grind fame quests and such to play a new class like on WoW, since on FFXI it's still the same char. But back on topic, check the stickies to learn up about the six basic jobs. All the party roles are there in there purest form. Warrior is the early level tank, which means high party invites. Being a tank usually means the first person to die in a party. Monks are DPS melee damage dealers in parties. Not too much skill to use them in low levels. Thiefs are watered down versions of warriors for the first 15 levels until you get sneak attack. Then they put out high spike damage. Takes a little positioning to use them right, and since they pull there very depended on in parties. White Mages heal. Therefore they get high invite rates, and high responsibility to go with it. Black Mages are easy to use, at least in low levels. Use magic every so often while low levels. Be sure not to do so much it takes hate away from the tank. Red Mages can heal a little, and they learn some black magic but you won't be using that in exp parties during low levels. You just start the battle of with Dia to debuff there defense and heal. You will most likely melee for the first levels of partying. This just explained the Valkrum Dune levels. You should try all jobs in a party situation to see which you want to take to at least 30 to unlock advanced jobs, or maybe even all the way. |

Hi detectiveL, Here's my advice and it comes from personal experience. On my current char I have gotten 2 classes to level 25 and 2 to level 10 and have a total of 20,000 gil (plus another 40,000 invested in armor). Start in Bastok as a Warrior or Monk. These classes tend to have the quickest fights and are always in demand in Parties. From level 1-3, grind immediately outside the Southgate in South Gustaberg. From level 4-6, grind on the first level of Vomp Hill. From level 7-10, grind on the second level of Vomp Hill. During all this time collect Wild Onions (5000-6000gil), Beehive Chips (3000-4000gil), and Honey (3000-4000gil) and sell them at the Bastok auction house. As I level, I usually collect at least 1 full stack of each of these from level 1-10 (sometimes even 2 stacks). At level 10, you will have at least 12,000 gil to invest in armor. At this point do not invest in the +1 (or High Quality) gear because it's usually more expensive and the benefits won't be felt until later. Wait until around level 20 when you start planning on the armor you'll be wearing for a long time to buy HQ the armor. At level 10-12, level in the area due north of North Gustaberg (I forgot the name of it), you enter the area by going to the far east in South Gustaberg then going north through both Gustabergs. During this time you can also have your Looking For Party signal on because sometimes a Power Level party in Valkurm Dunes will want to recruit you (especially since you'll be able to deal damage). Onto the real question. TANK Really simple, just pay attention and stay awake. Your job is mostly to keep the aggro on you and deal damage. The best weapon to use is a great axe, which you can obtain at level 10. MONK Equally simple to the tank, you don't even really have to pay as much attention at low levels. Your job is to deal damage: punch, punch, punch! The class is cheap to buy armor for since around level 25 you start settling on all the armor you'll be using until level 60-70ish. Because of the nature of this class, you should not be taking much damage during combat if you have a good tank thus it's safe to focus on gear that adds stats rather than armor (so you can focus on gaining modifiers like Attack, Strength, Agility). WHITE MAGE I wouldn't recommend this class for a beginner. Although it's not difficult, it is expensive. Between level 1 and 20 you will spend around 5000 gil on spells alone if I had to guess. In a party, your main job is to heal with the secondary being to debuff. RED MAGE As with the WHM, I wouldn't recommend the RDM. There's the spell to gil issue, but also it's more difficult to get into parties as a RDM. Since the RDM is considered to be a well-rounded character it's experienced in many things, but masters nothing. It's good to have a subjob when you start working on the RDM for this reason. In a party, you fight, debuff with BLM spells (when a BLM isn't present), and help the WHM heal as necessary. BLACK MAGE As with the RDM and WHM, I wouldn't recommend the BLM. The BLM experiences the same problems as the white mage. In a party, the BLM's main job is to debuff and "nuke." TIP FOR MAGES: While in a party, rest in between fights to recuperate MP. The only job I don't have experience with is Thief so I can't help much with them; however, I have heard it's a good idea to pair them up as a subjob when you're trying to earn money and kill Goblins or Yaguda. |

My suggestion to you: dont listen to other peoples advice as truth. Take it as a grain of salt. But, make your own choices you will be happier that way. Here is what i suggest. Go to the wiki and read the blurb about the 6 standard jobs. wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Jobs Pick one you like or think you will like and take it to 18. Get subjob quest done. Now is the time for choices. Do you like the job you picked? If yes pick another job that complements it as a subjob. First job not work out for you? Don't worry, in FFXI you have options. Did you like a job that another person was playing? try taking that job to 18 (Note: must be standard job). Do this til you found your nich. It is there you just have to find it. Now that you have a job you like make shure you have a sub for it that is lvl 18. Than take your favorite to 30. Now the game opens up. If you want to try one of the advanced job go for it. Some of them can be extramly fun. If an advaned job is not for you then keep with your original favorite. Keep leveling that job until you hit 75 or need something new. Changing your mind has no reprocussions. Just emjoy yourself. People will say this is a lot to ask of a new player but i think not. 1-18 can be done in most cases 2 days of average play time (1 if you are lucky/skilled). Play to have fun, not because your forced to be accepted. Also remeber to pick up your EXP ring when you get the CP for one. it makes the low levels fly by! Also please dont listen to what some people are saying about starting cites. There was some truth to them a year ago but that economy has died out. money can be made anywhere. |
