Yeah, but I think FANPERSON is more politically correct. So it should be FANPERSON. |

I think Jacobs' response to the knee-jerk, vitriolic nonsense that spews forth from certain customers' wounded sense of entitlement is spot-on. The customer always has a right to communicate his disapproval in a professional manner, and be responded to in kind. What a customer does not have the right to do, however, is be abusive. Your rights end where someone else's begins, and a representative of a company shouldn't have to put up with that kind of nonsense. Re: Lack of Official Forums. I don't know that I completely agree on principle, since I believe that one of my favorite MMORPGs ever -- Tabula Rasa -- was weakened by a fragmented community. I think an official site would have done wonders for that game. But I definitely see Jacobs' points about the mob mentality that tends to manifest itself on official forums. And anyway, forum frequenters represent only a portion of a total playerbase.

We're all well aware of your unhappiness with the game, kevadas. I respect your opinions and the words with which you choose to express them -- I'll thank you to respect mine. |

The 22nd Receptive Combat Unit (RCU) The 22nd Receptive Combat Unit is a brand new roleplaying clan on the Cassiopeia server. One of our goals is to help revitalize the roleplaying community that was so strong on that server in the months following the release of the game. We'd like to be a haven for the roleplayer who also enjoys experiencing everything a game like Tabula Rasa has to offer. |

I know these games are not 100% conducive to roleplay - no game is, although some at least provide some decent tools. The likelihood of a game being geared specifically toward roleplayers hovers around nil. So the roleplayers have to use the game to whatever extent they can. But a good roleplayer won't let those limits get to them. RP is what you make it. If you wait for it to find you, you'll be waiting forever. A lot of roleplayers do this. Get out there, start up a dedicated RP guild, roleplay in public channels, create events. |

I usually just shrug it off. Frack 'em. The first and only time my wife ever made a snide comment about my gaming, I reminded her that she had friends whose husbands spent 25+ hours a week in bars and then went off every other weekend to hunt or fish. My hobby is relatively inexpensive and keeps me in the home. I don't play when the kids are awake or if she wants to watch television with me. And she's aware that all she needs to do to get me to turn it off is suggest an activity I enjoy more than gaming. ;) |

No game is going to satisfy everyone. So I'm not going to try to convince you to like TR. But I'll say this:
1) Elves? Not a one in sight. That alone makes it worth a try. After almost a decade of MMORPG playing, that's pretty nice. Sure, I played Anarchy Online and City of Heroes/Villains, but after a while the whole Tolkein-esque fantasy thing gets old. 2) Engaging, dynamic combat. You have to aim. You have to take advantage of cover and your environment. You get access to a pretty cool arsenal of weaponry. Running across the terrain in TR has never been boring -- you're running through a combat zone with things trying to blow you up. It's a shooter. It's not "whack a mole" like every other MMORPG I've ever played., 3) Cool backstory. I like the idea of getting payback for Earth's devastation with every Crusty I wax. 4) I'm in the mid-30's, and I'm not hurting for content yet. And the game's only a few months old. Some people have power-leveled their way up and hit a brick wall. Not saying they're wrong, or even saying that NCSoft shouldn't have taken that into consideration -- they should have. But I don't perceive there to be a lack of content - and if there is at higher levels, I'm sure it will be addressed. 5) You feel powerful - no rabbits and mice to kill when you're just starting out. And even the support classes can kick ass. Healing and repairing armor aren't just the boring, button-mashing affair in other games.
Sure, I'm biased. I love the game. After years of recycled concepts, I'm glad to be playing something that really engages me again. |

And there are certainly some failings that lower TR in my eyes as far as roleplaying goes. The inablity to really customize your avatar (which I suppose makes sense from a design standpoint, since you spend 99% of the game with a helmet on) and the lack of emotes. But the game's only a few months old -- I'm quite happy NOW, and changes continue to be made to the game and will most likely keep being made. I've been IC almost 100% since stepping out of the dropship because the environment is so immersive... anything else that they add is more icing on the cake. |

The OP could turn out to be right... but if he is, it's luck. Anyone that makes claims about the inner workings of a company at which he isn't employed is speculating at best. He has absolutely NO CLUE about the *actual* factors that led to G&H getting the axe.
I don't know who's worse. a) Sideseat drivers, b) Armchair quarterbacks, or c) pre-release game fatalists. |

I'm not saying I won't play the game without an "M" rating, but I can't lie and say that the extra "realism" (i.e. violence and gore) wasn't one of the things I was looking forward to most. Not because I'm a psychopath, but because of the immersion factor. I love Conan, and Conan's world is a violent one; I want to play in that world. Backing down on the "M" rating content would also signal that the Dev's are willing to disregard their artistic vision under pressure, which for quality reasons is NEVER a good thing. |

The thing is, I have yet to see anyone explain -- in a coherent fashion -- why exactly these gold farmers are a threat to a specific game. I've seen a lot of posts on this subject that boil down to "Well, they're ruining the game" or "this game would be better without them" without any actual evidence as to how this ruination is taking effect. Seems to me that the only serious trouble they cause is that their existence it gives people something to piss and moan about, and creates a convenient target for group aggression. Kind of reminds me of the old rednecks I grew up around here in the South: "Those darn (insert minority here)! Everything was fine until they moved in!" But when pressed to explain exactly how things are worse because of that, you get the standard answers about crime and lowered property values... even if such things aren't actually happening. Turns out it's just the age-old human habit of finding the easy target (one that everyone else is heaping abuse on) and going with the flow. |

Some good discussion in this thread about the nature of evil -- good stuff. I don't know if it was mentioned or not, but I think it's possible to be really diabolical in EVE Online, provided that you've enough cash, firepower and smarts. From manipulating the economy to outright killing and thieving... you're limited only by the bounds of your moral code, as it were. |

Star Trek Online, for sure. I love the movie Stargate, and can't friggin' stand the television show. And, anyway, I've been a Star Trek fan since I was practically an embryo. |

I, too, have played EVE before and quit -- only once, though, and the first time I quit was because I was too impatient - impatient with the jump times; impatient with how slowly I was assimilating skills -- both in-game and real-life, learning to play the game skills. So I quit and went back to traditional MMO's like World of Warcraft and City of Heroes. I came back a week ago, and I think this time it' s going to stick. I finally learned to appreciate what EVE is -- the anti-MMORPG MMORPG. You can do something in EVE that isn't very easy to do in other games... completely immerse yourself in another reality. It isn't quick, and it isn't easy... but like real life, learning how to do it takes time. Logging into WoW or any of the other games on the market gives you instant gratification -- within 10 minutes of WoW, you've learned at least 50% of what you'd need to know to get along for the rest of your WoW career. EVE just takes a little longer -- but the satisfaction of learning it is exponential compared to a game like WoW. My first few days back in EVE were spent getting the shiznit knocked out of my by quest mobs. I was beside myself with frustration, until I learned to look at what I was doing objectively... and realized I was just charging in like I would in WoW or DAoC or CoH. I learned my ships capabilities, used tactics, and BAM! I was unstoppable. Well, not easily stopped anyway. It took a day or so, but when it came... I was pretty darned proud. |

Definitely Age of Conan... but also Star Trek Online (I know it's a long wait, but hopefully it'll be worth it.) |
