OMG guys, WTF!!!  Do I see actual honesty and realistic goals being used in relation to an upcoming launch?!!?!  I can't believe this.  A company just came out and told me the truth.  I'm actually still in shock from reading it.  I mean the very thought of being told the truth has me just...just...stunned.

This actually makes me want to buy the game more.  Is that odd?  I mean here we have a company that has pushed and pushed back the launch date for the sake of what I thought to be quality.  And then just when I think the extensions are superficial and not truly needed (i.e. to polish off insignificant CE extras), they drop this bombshell of an interview and actually admit that some major concepts of the game simply aren't finished.  KUDOS to you Mythic...KUDOS indeed!

To those of you who are unhappy with the announcement I simply pose the question - what would you do?  You have a product with potential.  You know how important launch is.  Do you do like every other game we b*tch and moan about, and go ahead with the launch revealing piss poor, half @ssed, unfinished main line concepts OR do you admit that reality beat fantasy with a stick; as it relates to game production, and it won't be ready?

I see the problem with doing this from reading some of the responses.  Mythic really is damned if the do or damned if they don't.  If they go ahead with the release of poorly polished cities and "not great" classes then the masses will complain.  If they withhold the classes and cities in an attempt to polish them, then the masses complain about that.  Just seems like a giant Mexican stand-off and Mythic is the only gun-slinger without a gun.

The ONLY question I'd have, would be if there is a time line AFTER launch for these cut back features/classes/cities to be implemented.  If they slap that "indefinite" amount of time tag on the previously mentioned components THEN I could see myself getting angry, but for now I'm quite satisfied with the move.  Again, KUDOS MYTHIC!

QFT

This is why I love Mythic as a company.  just look at the difference between them and Funcom, it's a gaping chasm.  If Funcom had been making Warhammer and made these same decisions they would have been telling the community and the beta testers not to worry, the other stuff is being internaly tested, is fine and will be in at launch.  Then lo and behold come launch it would all be missing, which is exactly what they have done with Aoc.  My hat is off to Mythic for their honesty and integrity, good job guys, I always thought that War would be a great game and now I'm even more sure of it.

My question is, I have bought the pre-order box from HMV over here in the UK and I have pre-ordered a copy of the Collector's Edition. But say if I just bought a standard edition (with just the discs, no art book etc etc) of WAR, would I still be able to use my pre-order box codes for the open beta, early access and exclusive items in-game?

Thanks for your help.

No, the bonus stuff requires a valid CE edition key.

I stopped reading after he refered to the official forums as unmoderated.  This alone shows that he wrote that blog in the 1st week.  After that the forum moderators all turned into Funcom is god automatons with any hint of dissent being squashed.

Server populations are pretty much maxed out so dont believe what all the haters are saying.

Have you noticed all these newish accounts with AOC in their handle?  It's the Funcom damage control & bullshit department, I'm sure of it.

Hold onto the code, you can't enter it yet.   OB isn't for awhile yet so they will have it sorted before you need it.

So, the scenario that says, "they did not make it with DX10 at launch and their working their asses off to get it out ASAP", does not exist for you?

FC have already stated that DX10 will be coming in the fall,  lets see now, coincidence that WAR releases in the fall as well?  i don't think so.

No matter how you look at it FC shares are heading south.

They have cut their holding in Funcom from 17.9% to 10.3%, read into that what you will but the chairman of Funcom's supervisory board should know a few things about the real situation right?

Sadly the best thing that could happen to the MMO industry at the moment would be for AoC to now collapse in spectacular fashion.  I feel bad for all the fans out there that really wanted the game to be something special, but one of the most anticipated MMO's ever taking a crashdive would send shockwaves far and wide.  Developers of future titles just couldn't ignore it and that would be good for gamers.

I run barely above the minimum requirements for AoC and experience no problems. The game is fun but certainly not intended for players that want to max loot or for those who derive self esteem from success in a video game. The combat system is elegant and is only "button mashing" for those who are not inclined to learn the subtleties. The community can be annoying but so can people.

I am perplexed by the negativity and I am only thankful that it did not stop me from buying the game. To those who continue to post their vitriol, it is well within your rights to do so but perhaps your energies would be better spent promoting something you like rather than attacking something you don't.

All the best

Misfits ...mm!

Okay I'll bite.  The gaming public as in most other areas of life can be seperated into three major and distinct groups.  Users, Doormats & Normals ( although I use the term normal simply because it's the largest group ).

Users are those people that don't give a crap about anyone else and who will gladly step on the heads of the masses to achieve what they want.  They do this because the only heads usually available to be stepped on are those belonging to the doormats and that group carry huge signs saying head available, please step here.  A few normals also get caught up in the users upward climb but these are usually there to kick the bugger in the nuts on his way down instead of blindly trying to give him another leg up like the doormats do.  You get the idea.

How does this aquaint to the gaming world?  Well the User is the developer / publisher that releases a faulty product driven by marketing and media hype in order to rake in as much cash in as short a space of time as possible.  Funcom are guilty of this with AoC.  The game was nowhere near ready for release, had known issues and missing content that FC blatantly lied about and quite frankly bore no resemblance to what the media circus and PR was shoving down everyones throats.  Sure the game may one day become what it should have been at release but that is no excuse for what hit the shelves.

The Doormats are those that are happily oblivious to all this.  It wouldn't matter if a Funcom representative turned up on their doorstep waving an axe with the remains of thier pet dog still dribbling down his chin.  All they would see is that elusive light at the end of the tunnel and remain blinded by it.  They are the kind of people that never ever take anything back to the shop or complain that something isn't right, and they are destined to forever be walked on.

Thankfuly the majority of people belong in the normals group.  They do take faulty items back for a refund.  They do complain when something isn't right and they try at all costs to avoid being stepped on by the users.  This of course isn't always possible but the normals are also a vengeful lot and they will find some way of getting that User back for the indignity forced upon them.

On these boards the majority, as in life are normals which is why the majority of AoC posts are negative.  These people, like myself and although a little dubious fell for the FC hype.  In doing so we bought the game and were stepped on.  Guess what?  It became payback time very quickly.  The 1st payback appeared as cancelled accounts all over the place, the second as posts on various forums telling people just what was wrong with the game, posts that were and are for the most part honest experiences and to call those making them misfits is just plain wrong.

However, you may disagree with my three groups and think that the world is seperated into only two, the complaining misfits and the happily oblivious.  I think of those two choices I would rather be a misfit, at least I wont get a flat head from having it repeatedly stood on.

wow ... what a true gamer, spends 7 hours on newbie island and decides to unsubscribe. Do you even like or have played any other MMOGs for more then 1 month? 3 months? 6months?

Perhaps he played already enough MMO's to see the old hat basics used in Conan underneath the beautiful micro graphics.

7 hours and 3 characters ...... that means he prolly didnt make it to 13+ on any of his characters. It would be like playing WoW for 7 hours and makeing 3 characters and only sitting in the newbie area and running around dodging mobs trying to explore. No game can be judged in 7 hours unless your playing some kind of FPS. get a f**kin clue dude.

I am an experienced MMO gamer, been playing them for years.  I quit Archlord after 2 hours, I knew it was crap, game flopped and is now f2p.  I quit RF Online after a day, I knew it was crap, game flopped and is now f2p. I stayed with Ao even through the disaster of a launch, game has won countless awards, I could go on.

It's like taking your broken PC to be fixed.  The local handyman may take a week or two to find out what's wrong, an experienced tech will tell you in 5 minutes.  If the OP has tried and played Tortage daytime then he knows how the rest of the game pans out and if it's not for him then it's not for him.  To say that he is unable to make that decision after 7 hours of play just shows the ignorance of some on these boards.

I happily shelled out £35 today. After a few hours of installation and patching - I was very excited to see what AoC had to offer.

And 7 hours and 3 characters later: My cancellation reason to Funcom:
Extremely repetitive. No freedom of movement nor exploration. No way to skip cut-scenes. Cringe when I have to create chars - story extremely linear. TERRIBLE voice acting and accents. Non fluid char movements and control response.
Makes me sad. :(
Basically its a bad version of Guild Wars with an enhanced LOTR-ish feel with very awkward arcade key-mashing. Looks and feels good initially - wears of very quickly.
On the plus side: Good gfx. Good music.
Sigh. Flame me all you want, but  when you have played lot of MMOs as I have, you know can tell a true gem from the rest.
Regards.

After you leave Tortage the game is just different zones and they aren't linear at all. I promise.

Yes they are, don't lie to the man.  I'm lvl 45 and the post 20 zones are no different in gameplay to Tortage daytime.

You make it seem as if any MMO somehow gets surprisingly different (quest, PvP, ect.) after the lower levels.

They don't but I'm tired of people trying to dupe people into believing this one is different.  After tortage the zones are a larger and more varied but that's it, the gameplay is identical to Tortage daytime, get a quest, complete a quest, get a quest, complete a quest, rinse and repeat until high enough for next zone.  You could of course go to the resource zones and run around like an idiot competing with others for the few resource nodes or try the awful crafting system but these are just addons to the standard gameplay, and not very well done addons either.

A lot of people are still finding the game new and fresh but after they have levelled a couple of characters to 80 they will be as bored of it all as they are with other MMO's.

I think the important phrase there is 'long term appeal' and it is here that AoC falls down.  The game is pretty decent 1st time through, 2nd time a bit of a chore doing all the same stuff to level an alt, 3rd time? forget it.

Gave the game a 6.

1) graphics are excellent

2) sound is good - very good

3) starting area is a yawn fest, very bad idea by Funcom to make it this way.  Currently in an 80 strong guild and 90% of members hate the place.

4) bugs, bugs and more bugs.  Crashes, broken quests, invisible barriers, vanishing skills, vanishing mobs and players etc. etc. too many to list.

5) Crap community.

6) Crap customer service approaching SoE standards

7) very linear quest progression

8) no real distinction between so called good & evil characters, even the evil ones are given the good oriented destiny quest line.  Would have been much better with an evil version to follow as well.

9) cookie cutter characters once in game, every member of a class wearing the same stuff and using the same weapons etc.

10) boring combat system once novelty wears off

11) dungeons are bland and relatively small

12) loot tables are pathetic, even boss mob drops in dungeons are very ordinary

13) terrible resource & crafting system

The game as it stands is a bug ridden pile of eye candy to be honest, I'm here posting now because the Khemi zone is borked on Ymir atm with nobody able to leave it.  Before the flames start I have a high-end system and have levelled a guardian to 45 so make of that what you will.

i hope the real world doesn't suck as much

currentley I'd give the game a 6/10 only because the graphics are stellar but the gameplay sucks and is so unoriginal.

OK, I will pass out the troll food for this one.

Item #1 - More RPG than MMORPG?  Are you out of Tortage yet?  Nope, because you "can't wait for 20th" so you have not entered the big part of the MMORPG yet.  NEXT.

Item #2 - Chat Screen Sucks.  Agreed!  My godz, how can these companies consistantly overlook this aspect of MMORPGs?  City Of Heroes has done it exceptionally well, all the rest could use some work.  OP's point is well justified.

Item #3 - Combos cool but OP has seen better... OK, I'll call your bluff.  Which MMORPG has them better?

Item #4 - Long load screen.  I have been timing mine with simple counting, not scientifically tracking them with an atomic clock or anything, but the longest I have had is about 15-seconds.  Not even enough time to take a sip of my tea.

Item #4 - Someone that is dissapointed with within a few hours of playing with their new toy should seek out real life for a little while.

Item #5 - Six out of Ten?  Meaning roughly half the games on the market are better?  Name the games that push this down to hardly about average.

The game play sucks?  Unoriginal?  How much do I want to bet that after saying this sucks and is unoriginal the OP heads back to Scooby Do land in WoW?

Seeing as you trolled him for having a valid viewpoint I'll re-troll :)

item #1 Intended to be like an RPG, in my opinion however FC have made a huge error by having the starting zone like this because 1st impressions are golden.  Tortage is linear and tedious, more so as Funcom have now gone back on what they originally said yet again about only needing to do it once.  Sorry altoholics, you have to suffer the damn thing everytime.  FC have said they may allow us to start at lvl 5, well woop-de-fooking-do as that takes all of ten minutes.

Item #2 no argument here, chat box does indeed suck.

item #3 Combat animations are very good, I have no complaints in that department.  The combat system however is a failure.  Let me explain:  I like many others have a gaming keyboard and all my combos are now programed into my macro keys.  This means that I only need to press 1 key to fire off the complete combo faster than anyone alive could do it with a mouse.  This gives me a huge advantage in PvP against anyone without a gaming keyboard and takes all the so called skill out of it, which defeats the object but has to be done in order to remain competative with other players with gaming keyboards.

item #4 load screen time depends a lot on how good the users PC is, especially how much memory is on board so different people will get different load times.  The problem here isn't the load time but the fact that there are so many of them.  Completely zoned worlds went out with Adam but to their credit they do make for smoother gameplay.

Item #5 I gave Tortage 4/10.  After Tortage I give it 7/10.  Your reasoning assumes that the OP gives 10/10 to other games which may not be true.

Item #6 Tortage gameplay doesn't suck but it doesn't impress either.  The gameplay after Tortage is better and the game does grow on you after that so why only 7/10?  Well, for a start the world feels small and it is compared to other MMO's on the market.  The game is riddled with bugs, a small number of which are serious while the majority are just annoying.  The world is more open but this is largely a clever illusion as with most MMO's, in fact the game is still very linear in progression but levelling is fast so getting to the endgame will not take too long.  The community is awful and I hope it improves with the new players arriving after release.  The pickup groups I have been in so far have been full of clueless, whining morons that have no idea how to function as a team, only with guild groups has there been any cohesion and I can see this getting more and more the case as time goes on.  Funcom have made the same error that all devs make every time with prices.  Large bag 30 gold, mounts an
