You can't really see it as selfish because it's not that they don't make the effort of taking account other people's feelings, it's because many of them are unable to do so. You likely wouldn't blame someone with Down's syndrome for being who they are, and you likely wouldn't tell an asthma patient to 'quit it and breathe like normal people' when he/she is having an attack. Mental disorders are very real. It saddens me to see how many people do not take them as serious as somatic sickness people can 'see'. I'm not blaming you for thinking like that, however! You're by far not the only one. :) |

Hello, fellow psychology student! I tried to get the same message across a couple of times, only much less elaborate out of 'tl;dr' fear. So, yes. I agree with your general opinion. |

I've had the pleasure of meeting some very smart and kind Texans. All master's degree and above in theoretical physics and psychology. Perceptions like these are mostly always subjective. |

And nationalistic to the point of delusional. America is a great country, I'd not mind living there. There are some countries I'd rather live in, but it's definitely on my list. It's in no way or shape the 'greatest country ever' and 'the future is ours' sounds like something an environmentalist superhero would say. |

I have a friend whose name is literally 'Jan Alleman'. Dutchies may find it funny. It's pretty much the Dutch version of 'John Doe'. |

I can actually respect that in a politician to some extent. It's better than acting with a big smile all the time. He's human, too. |

Welcome to OU! I'm currently not playing myself, because all my real life friends are WoW players and wouldn't think about playing a game with UO's graphics, but still, I feel UO is the best game I played since I played SWG. |

There's no way you can objectively 'poll' how racist someone is on a scale large enough to show a real representation. |

As I said...the definition is changing as a result of misuse of the word...much like the word ironic has changed slightly in definition due to popular incorrect use of the word. It's what happens when people who don't really know any better get a hold of something that they don't really understand.
I agree, in a way. On the other hand, can it not simply be called an evolution of a language? It's stuff like this that makes a language change from ye olde English to American-English. I'm not a specialist in language, however - so how do you feel about that? |

I think your radar detects wrong, actually. Although i can't speak for him. It's a point I bring up a lot with my girlfriend, who is fiercly Christian, while I'm an agnostic science student. What makes your God, of whatever religion you may believe in, more believable and just than the God(s) of the other major and minor religions around the globe or, yes, even religions one could make up on the spot? I agree it's a very simplistic argument to make, and often a bit of a cheap shot. Because, of course, it works both ways for atheists too! Which is why I'd always say I'm agnostic leaning towards atheism. I am, however, having problems saying one faith (be that christianity or atheism) is the one without having convincing proof. Of course I believe evolution is real, and we all stem from single celled organisms. But that does not in any way disprove any God. Perhaps not even the Christian God when using some other interpretations. In the end I'm willing to admit that "I'm not sure." And I'm fine with that. |

You shouldn't always trust on the government to babysit everyone. I'm not, however, an economist in any way beyond an advanced introductory course. I know a few things on global politics from several university courses but I am not in any way a PhD (or even a BSc) specialising in that subject. It would just seem that from a country as gigantic as China with its huge trade output, there are bound to be a few incidents with less-than-healthy materials. Especially considering their poor quality control. This debate springs up every now and then this happens, but would it really justify banning that juggernaut of a country in trade? It's not a popularity contest you're talking about - this is global politics. And I feel the common plebians (that includes me) play armchair-diplomat/world leader too much while knowing far too little while posting on public forums. Please don't take anything I said for granted. Like I said, I suspect I know far too little to say anything intelligent about the situation. But I suspect that counts for just about everybody in here. Also, that 'golly gee wiz' line sounded rather patronising. Might want to avoid that in the future. |
