Leveling as we use it in games is not represented by the dictionary as we use it as an action of gaining higher level. The term levelling is used in conjunction with the definition pertaining to keeping somethign level, in balance, etc... so using it with 2 L's is wrong when pertaining to a gamer gaining levels. It has never been proper American English to use a consonant when adding an "ing" to words. Americans have simplified the language into a more efficient form by just requiring "ing" at the end of the word to be modified. But no matter the spelling, the end result is this article has failed due to a blunder in communication. |

I don't even play EQ2 but I was interested in seeing how they respond to player questions. I'm seeing this entirely from the outside, which is good because I have no blind wishful thinking towards or against the game.
From the dev responses I got this:
"the game is fine just the way it is, and we won't be making any changes, but thank you anyway for yet another boring series of inputs"
So that means they're gonna just let the game die in the condition it is in right now.
Since the game itself is old an no longer cutting edge technology (I don't think it ever was) they're not going to sink any further revenue into it. Maintenance and existing functionality is all you can expect at this point. The *actual* next generation games are popping out now and EQ2 and WoW are paling in comparison.

"Actually SWG had an ability that allowed the town militia to make people in their town attackable if they didn't leave within a certain period of time. Unfortunately do to an unfortunate incident involving kicking out a csr from a town and then ganking him, the ability was revoked. Not sure if that was the sole reason the ability was removed, but I remember it made quite a stink at the time. Made for a good screenshot too " ----------------------------- I totally remember that. Classic flashback points for you. |

While I think PvP is popular, it is still not as popular as plain ole PvE. While WoW PvP lost its flavor to me I tried to figure out why. My conclusion is that I don't like competing against humans... in RL as well as games. I love a great discussion with humans though because there are opinions that can't be wrong, therefore no winner or loser, just an exchange of ideas. Opinions in games can only be expressed in a textual form but not a game mechanic, unless you're talking about the expression involved with costuming like CoH/V. Anarchy Online definitely had a super PvP system that involved a changing world as territories changed sides and Notum posession was the holy grail. But like DaoC it went the way of the dodo because by today's standards they are both graphically inept. SWG had a great system of player killing that allowed leveling up while hunting players (bounty hunter) and would still be sweet if it wasn't for the "big change" it underwent to accomodate kids and their need for "make me a Jedi or I won't play" attitude. |

Worst: WoW, KalOnline, DaoC, SWG (when they changed it for all the kids to be Jedi) Best: Anarchy Online (who knew with a name like that?) City Of Heroes (villains not so much). Not sure about EVE yet, I just started yesterday on the trial. I haven't been turned into a fireball yet like i expected, so far so good. I let my kids play KalOnline but I turned off ALL chat functions and don't let them team with anyone. I lasted one day on WoW, not only was it non-interesting to me, but the chatter was amazingly stupid and childish. In Daoc, people are all out for themselves. Don't ever expect any help from anyone unless it benefits them too. SWG was pretty cool but had the big mouth kids and spammers in the major cities. the test server was where the adults could hide and play a mature game and the most helpful atmosphere EVER of any game... EVAR! |

Malcontent maybe, but probably not the type of game he likes. People condition themselves in certain ways. Mario games have an end, you finish them and move on. If you have that mindset then at lvl 50 you have "finished" and can leave now, you won, good job. But if you played the game because you have fun playing it then level 50 is not the end at all. The Mario mindset exhibited is also evident with his idea of wanting to get to max level and then stay with one character, meaning you didn't like "the grind" and it was a chore and you'd rather not do it again. I've been a hero for over 2 years now and I enjoy playing at every level and every type of toon. I exempted my lvl 50 Peacebringer to lvl 11 the other night and had a blast... so to speak. I just got my 4th lvl 50 and still its hard to choose which one to play, I love them all. |

That post was from back in February, I've since given up and forgotten about Xiah. and the page is not flash or java, it's ActiveX as I mentioned. I was also using IE7 which was still considered beta at the time, so that may have been the problem who knows, whos cares now? The Xiah folks didn't care enough to fix it and so I can't be bothered with their game. And steph? sorry I can't dumb it down enough for ya to understand. |

I disagree with many parts of the article itself, mostly because it seemed the only experience with MMO's was based on WoW. The female avatars in WoW are hardly even female as it is. They all have these Olive Oyl rubber band arms that can only be sexy to other cartoon characters. Males who enjoy playing sexy female avatars will not choose WoW as their game. Also, the article made it seem like females have an edge when it comes to freebies. This may have been the case many years ago but nowadays females really don't get a whole lot of special favors any more due to the enlightenment in the past 5 years that any girl can be a dude. This article is at least 5-10 years old in its accuracy. And another inaccuracy... There IS an MMO where you gain experience for dancing. A quite popular and successful one too. I'm sure most of our readers caught that too. I'm not gonna say which one because to the tens of thousands of players who played it, it's pretty obvious. I've played with some very close friends for over a year and the whole time they were convinced I was a female. And not because I'm feminine, but because my character was. She wasn't flirty or trashy, just bubbly, fun and happy. I broke a lot of hearts of men that truly thought I was female. They never even thought to ask me, and if they did, I would have told them the truth, but the subject never even came up. I've played 3 long term games now and in all 3 it took over a year for my friends to even care what my sex was. they just assumed I was female. |

It's not only that but CoH/CoV has a clear advantage when it comes to holiday events because the world itself is based on events/holidays that really take place on planet Earth. Valentines, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, Halloween are all actual holidays that can be easily implemented because in these games these holidays are real. Fantasy based MMO's like EQ, WoW, Vanguard will never be able to implement these well because Earth does not exist to them. So instead they fabricate holidays and events that try to resemble what us "Earthikans" enjoy. This is what also adds to the immersion of a game too. Players can relate to things that exist in real life and its history. CoH/CoV is based on actual history that has been changed through the years of course but they are free to mention things like the Supreme Court decisions, cars and trucks, turnstiles, airports, inaugural speeches, parking meters, credit cards, Mars, The Moon, The Sun, and the list can go on. Fantasy games are too limited in this sense. They are forced to make up all their history, names, events, and most of the time it comes out really corny and patchwork at best. |

First to address the guy thats leaving...DLTDHYAOTWO. There is a downside to having more zones to play in and that is the population is more spread out, making it a bit harder to broadcast LFT. The villain zones are more level specific and easier to find players your level due to them being concentrated more in one zone. Also, many of the hero zones are really not played that much and seem abandoned and could use a facelift much like Faultline got. (kudo's to that one) The video was done well and I was excited to watch it. I tend to play more on the hero side but I do enjoy jumping the fence at times to be a villain too. |

Thank you for explaining this to the masses. I think some folks are under the impression that you were a reporter at a State of the Union Address where the speaker MUST answer questions posed to them. Perpetual was not under an inquisition, but rather was offering what they DO have to show us. I'm glad time wasn't wasted asking gameplay questions that we know there is no answer to yet. At this early stage it's better to listen to what they have done already than to push for things yet to come under development or ready to be released to the public. |

One of the more soothing things I read in there was about the music and their decision to keep the familiarity of the original themes so it feels more Star Trekky. In my opinion that is a VERY important aspect that creates incredible immersion. When SWG came out I was really confused by the music that was "new" to me because they didn't have any music associated with A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The only music they had was from the first trilogy... which was not that familiar to me at the time. But they were also trying to promote that series quite a bit... but in doing so they sacrificed some vital immersion. It would have had that Star Wars feel from the start if they included the original Star Wars theme in their game. So if I hear the original Star Trek music (from the original series) in the game, I'm gonna get that tingle of warm familiarity right off the bat. |

Thats a common thing among other games like WoW and EQ but not with CoH. In City of Heroes there are ALWAYS lower level players and there are ALWAYS other players your level to team with. Thats because it has a high replay value and people are always making more alts. |
