You want to save someone? Go find a friend... leave strangers to do what they like, even if it is to die.

http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Mechanics:%22Assist%22_Exp_Penalty

"So, if you're solo and another solo player "assists" you, then you get exactly 50% of the experience you would have normally gotten."

I actually can't stand people helping me that aren't with me. I am about ready t go off next time someone cuts in on my mob. I understand an accidental aoe but I'm not seeing that - I'm seeing people totally oblivious to what they are doing that stand around waiting on a thank you. You don't deserve any thanks for being an ass.

#1 reason the xp loss

Ok, at max level we could all help each other but now - you cut into my xp - we aren't going to be pals afterward.

#2 done at the wrong time

If I am no where near even half morale, GET AWAY, this is my mob and my class - I will do it - just because I don't kill as fast as you expect me to, I am going to be fine.

#3 messes up testing

I can't count how many times tonight I was working on a mob to test my new pet or to see what these vague legendary skill alter and some nimbleboy comes along with his wee bow and just "has" to help me. I didn't ask you to help and you just mess up my testing - thanks, now I have to start over, ass.

#4 groups are the worst

What  makes a group think it's admirable to run past my mob, dot/melee it up on their way thru. Once again - if I don't ask you - don't get involved.

#5 WHAT MAKES YOU THINK SOMEONE NEEDS YOU !!

STAY OUT OF BUSINESS THAT IS NOT YOURS, I WONT THANK YOU AND IM TIRED OF YOUR FLIPPANT ATTITUDE THAT

I SHOULD BE THANKFUL THAT YOU ARE NOT LETTING ME SOLO, THE THING THAT I HAVE CHOSEN TO DO AT THIS MOMENT.

I decided earlier that the next time someone tags my mob I'll follow them around and tag theirs also. Im really annoyed by this if you can't tell.

Be real happy you don't touch my mob, I may decide to ruin your whole week and get banned :D

I hear you and I can agree with you, but I don't think it get's to me as much as it seems to get to you, maybe lay off of the caffeine a bit or something, remember it's a game not a career, but you still have a good point and this problem isn't just in LOTRO, it happens a lot in other games as well, some people just like to play dense, so they can get away with shit, like the guy who walks passed the ten guard corpse's that I spent twenty minutes stealthing and backstabbing so I could be in a position to take out the last guard and loot the treasure chest safely, only to have him loot it while I fight the last guard no more than a foot from the chest,( happened in WoW last week to me) what he's a blind player or something, didn't see the nine foot troll,(ME!) hacking a way at the guard Next to the treasure chest?

Other Players: Honestly What is wrong with some of you players and don't give me this," you didn't know, we just wanted to help!" crap, every mmorpg I've play allows you to see another players health by a health bar, if it's 1mm for death, then it's a pretty good bet they want help, if it's anything else, ASK or offer to group, refusal means, leave them alone, it's not that big a deal if they die, especially at lower levels, so just move on and do your thing and leave them to theirs.

(Q) Someone remind me here, LOTRO has defence skill, which increase's when you get hit? ,(been a while since I played Lotro)

-OP might have been what he was doing, trying to work up his defence skill.

As for why he was rude, well maybe you weren't the only one who tried to help him out and when you get a lot of helpful players trying to help, it can get a bit much, remember it's his game as well, he is entitled to play it his way, as long as he doesn't interfere with anyone else while he plays his way and no not letting you help, is not counted as him interfering in your game, just a thought.

The Games Are.

-Rohan Online - never played

-Cabal Online - nice graphics, easy to play, easy to grind, frist couple of maps are free.  7/10

-Perfect World - nice graphics, easy to play, lite to medium grind, FREE!   8/10

-Requiem - nice graphics,  easy to play, medium grind, free   7/10

-2Moons - never played

-4Story - never played, but it's supose to be the eastern version of WOW,( really is a clone ) free!

-Silkroad - never played

I am just trying to find out which one to actully start playing based on what other think. - each game in the games list is rated by the players and what they think of the game, the mmorpg gameslist is the best way to find a game you like (  please note the scores I give above are mine! )

hope this helps, :)

You could always tilt the cam up/down using the mouse, common in most good/bad 3d mmorpgs and most 3d mmorpg's give a basic version of first person by scrolling the mouse wheel in and out, also going thru the keyboard control's,( found in the option panel of your fav game) will let you know what the keyboard command are as well.

Personally I like using both, by themselves there a bit lacking and restrictive, but together they give so much more depth to my fav game.

I guess that depends on your connection speed.

I have a 10Mb Virgin cable connection and it took a couple of hours to download the whole game.

I think it starts off saying it's going to take forever and then quickly adjusts it's estimate as it gets a steady download speed.

Adsl 2+ connection speed, still got 4hrs and 40 min's to go as of this post. it's cool I'll just wait it out. :)

Sorry for the late reply.

I'm working for an antivirus company, so I hope I can shed some light onto the matter. Recently, the malware businesses started attacking MMOs directly, writing malware explicitly targeted at MMOs to gain access to MMO accounts. While probably not as profitable as trying to get your online banking credentials, it's easier and you usually get away with your loot. Think robbing 7/11s instead of banks.

Being hacked 4 times sounds like you have one of those gems of malware, as has been suggested earlier. Losing all your toons but the lv70 also indicates that, after all you should play your top level toon and not level some new toon, to maximize the profit for the attacker for the next time he comes harvesting you. And the best suggestion (i.e. formating and reinstalling) was already given, which I would also recommend. But allow me to take it a step further to keep you from getting infected again.

First of all, stay away from dubious third party "tools". I'm not talking about plugins (which you should also only get from trusted sources, btw), which are usually safe. You can run Omen or Gatherer just fine, no worries there. But be wary of "special editions" or other wannabe goodies you find in P2P. Not trying to trash P2P, but it simply is nothing I could put into the "trusted source" bin. When there's version 2.3 on the official server and you find something like a "new and improved" 2.4 on P2P, 99 out of 100 times you're dealing with something bogus.

The plugin itself would even be safe (at least as long as there's no inherent bug in the LUA engine, of which I wouldn't be aware of right now), but they usually come with some installer to make it easier for you to put it into the correct directory and plug it into your game. It's trivial for malware writers to bundle their malware into the installation process.

I would be especially wary of "botting tools" or similar. A lot of them are bugged as well. And since there's hardly something that could be called "trusted source" for something that is against a game's EULA, you can never know what you get unless you know how to take it apart and take a look at its inner workings. Usually it's not worth the risk.

Besides getting an antivirus tool, I would also recommend getting Spyware search tools like Spybot S&D, which also has a registry surveillance tool that warns you if anything wants to change critical parts of your registry. I would also recommend getting SpywareBlaster, which contains a feature that automatically blacklists and blocks URLs that are known as malware hosts and dropoff sits (i.e. the servers that a keylogger would report to), so that even if you get infected you have a chance that no info can reach your attacker.

Both of those tools are freeware (in their basic version, which is enough), so it doesn't even cost you.

Happy gaming, and stay safe!

(Before we proceed, note I will be using my terminology "MMGS", for Massively Multiplayer Gaming Service, in place of "MMO" or "MMORPG", as I find MMORPG to be an inaccurate term, and I don't want to confuse anyone more than I normally do.  Just play along, and consider me ---> )

Ok, so, I'm a long time MMGS player, and have played all of them up until the past couple of years, when my computer finally because too weak to work with the offerings.  Therefore my last gasp was somewhere around the beta for LOTRO.   Anything before that, I've pretty much played.

Now I have a shiny new computer that can shoot laser beams to the moon, and is ready to handle anything I throw at it.  I'm DYING for some online play again, but I have NO clue what to get into, there are so many choices nowadays.

Let me list the type of (crazy, strange) online player I am, and see if anyone has tips.  I'm going to go crazy for me and be VERY brief, which is nearly impossible.  Bear with me.

I'm a solo-style player.  I have ODD issues with grouping and / or guilding, which include pretending to have internet disconnections if someone asks me to join them.  I play MMGSs so that I have a never-ending, expansive world to explore and evolve in with REAL people populating it around me that I can provide services to in the form of selling crafted goods or saving them from a wandering monster, but I just have never succeeded in finding a way to join a group of people and be expected to do stuff with 'em all the time.

I love crafting, but it's ok if it's simplistic.  Just something more for the character to do and evolve with.  Complex is great, I isn't too stupid to understands it.  No crafting? Not the end of the world, but kind of a bummer.

I play all the time, long hours (when involved in an MMGS) but to date have NEVER reached a maximum level in any game.  Not in WoW after a year, not in EQ or EQ2 after several years.   Why?  Several reasons- I don't push for the end content.  I've never experienced "level grind".  I just do whatever is fun at that moment, and let the levels come to me.  I also like to have a few bazillion characters- if I'm allowed to make 10, I have 10, and I tend to start those 10 10 different times to level 10.  Got that? (I like to restart often.)  Also, I refuse to accept ANYTHING for free from other players.  If you try to give me a copper piece, no.  If you try to give me the best weapon in the game that can be traded to another player? No.  Everything on my characters is looted by me, or made by me, or bought by me.  This slows one down, in say, WoW, where I don't group and therefore don't raid and therefore have crappy gear. =D

I do like PvP, but I'm more a fan of controlled PvP than complete free for all.  I mean, if I can wander into a zone and know I'm in danger, great.  But if I just joined and somebody 10 levels higher than me kills me and takes my starter sword, that's pretty stupid (of them, and the game developers.)  I played quite a bit of the low level WoW arenas but did get really annoyed (and eventually quit using them) because of twinks, which I consider cheating.  (I know, argument for another day.)  Still, I could not compete with someone who had a one-hit kill sword, so, that ruined the fun for me playing "by the rules".  If there are PvP systems out there without that imbalance, that'd be good.

So, what's a good choice for a soloist, non-guilding/grouping, crafting, earn-everything-yourself, patient, plays-a-lot, semi-PvPer?  Appreciate helpful answers in advance.

(Oh, please eliminate "Guild Wars" from the suggestions, it's not an MMGS- I have it, and enjoy it, but I'm looking at the pay games right now.)

I'd love insight into Warhammer and Conan since I haven't played either. Oh, and LOTRO, now that it's out, I did beta like I said but don't know what the final product is like. I've tried EvE a few times and love the feel but keep hearing it's a no-go for soloists.  Last I've played was WoW, and it's fun enough, but I kind of end up stalling about level 40ish and then just recreating my low levels over and over, until I tire of it.  Plus I hear that "it sucks" (apparently from the 11 million+ players currently in it.)

Thanks for reading!  I love you!  (Ok, not really, just being silly in case you read this far!)  Thanks again for any helpful suggestions.  I bow to your wisdom!

(P.S.  Yes, this was, in fact, a "brief" post for me. Yay me! Just imagine my "verbose" posts!)

Hi, just to let you know, you are not alone with your gaming style of play, there are a lot more people who play and think the way you do, I like to call us," Sliders" after the TV show as we like to jump and slide between all the different games we own, I also totally agree with your view of the," levels come to you" ( so why chase them and end the fun and adventure prematurely)

I'm about to try out Vanguard for the first time, should have it installed in another hour or two, will let you know what it's like in a day or two.

War was a lot of fun, but it's very new and buggy, will be a great game in a year or so, but at the moment it will only keep you busy of a month,( or more if your really into it in a big way.)

LOTRO is a lot of fun solo, it's easy to group up if you need it, the player's are friendly and helpful, but in the long run it can also become a bit dry.

The only advice I would give is to, not give up on your older game's,( keep playing them, as well) just add newer one's to your world's to visit list and your universe will become bigger.

the only other advice I would add, is make sure you have a nice and very big hard drive to fit all those worlds on,( my biggest problem at the moment )

Hope this help's.

I think some people out there, will tell you that your already living it, I mean what do you think the term,"BC" as in,"10,000 BC!" mean's, it's not," Before Christ " it meant," Beta, Closed" they didn't bother with an open beta as they had only six days before it opened and went live, wasn't a good opening as well, only two human's showed up and there was only the training area called the," the Garden of Eden' and the moderator was a real Nazi who banned them almost straight away for eating ingame, dumped them outside on the test server to fend for themselves, wasn't much fun, only swamps and jungle's and killer you name it's roaming everywhere, one map really was all there was, so they tried splitting the map up into different area's, then into smaller maps, by this time more humans had shown up, then after awhile there was to many humans and then they started to complain or they wanted more, some thought the other half had it better, and to top it all off, No one as heard from the developer since the opening.

Not to mention it was advertised as a Free to play, but it has so many hidden cost's and ingame shop's, no I say we stick to the games we know and luv, that also have a working and active support system in place.

I am a Christian, and as such I tend to be somewhat wary in the games I play.  I tried WoW and did enjoy it, however I was forced to play as a Draenei priest, as that was the only race not rife with Satanic crap(I'd have played a human, but humans can use witchcraft in this game which I find offensive) and had a story and character heavily aligned with holiness, which pleased me a lot.  Eventually I had to give that up since looking at Draenei makes me feel odd, seeing that they look more like demons than actual holy beings, and to see such creatures portrayed in such a positive light seemed offensive to God.

Well anyway, I heard WAR was going to be different from WoW so I felt I should try that.  My goodness, where do I even begin?  First off, I was going to play Order, as that was the established "holy side", until I noticed something highly disturbing:  The male elves all dress like women!  Why do they all dress as females?  I suppose I could have used a human, but frankly having to stand side by side with these overly femme men in dresses as a symbol of holiness was just offensive.  I then decided to try order and made a Chosen so I could kill all these effeminate creatures masquerading as Christians.  I had fun so far, until I saw the dark elves.  Why are the females so scantily clad?  I am a married man and I try to keep away from that sort of thing, but this was everywhere I looked!  How can I enjoy a nice game with these big breasted nubile women prancing around in barely any clothing?  It's bad enough the server doesn't have many people on it anyway, but the times I log on and do see someone, it's a female dark elf running around with her breasts hanging out like some kind of stripper!

After this sickening crap, I had no choice but to go back to WoW and make a Draenei Deathknight.   It may be satanic looking and vile, but at least my character is covered up and not dressed like a damn Medieval hooker.

I'm telling you, changes need to be made or this game will lose a LOT of Christian players.

You do know that Jesus Never wore long pants, nor even short pant's and by your standard's, he also wear's a dress, I suppose you'll become a devil cultist now, so you can kill Jesus for wearing a dress and not saving mankind in a three piece suit?

I/m telling you, changes need to be made or this game will lose a LOT of Christian players.  -Good, if they are in anyway like you, then it's a good thing!

Also playing a Chaos Chosen will make you BURN,( and I mean you, not anyone else) in HELL, (burn baby burn!)

-Oh and by the way, there adding in another Dark elf  class in a few weeks, enjoy!

...something that isn't an opinion, but fact: The current genre called MMORPGs evolved from its predecessor called MUD's. For those of you who weren't even born at the height of its popularity: MUDs were text based online adventure RPG's. The world was build up out of small sections/chambers, each with its own description, possible occupants/enemies and directions/exits. The whole goal of the game was to be able to have a fun adventure in an environment that would constantly be updated and expanded. It was a hobby and a passion, designed by and for people who craved the style of those early dungeon crawling games (like Zork for example), but would like to play in an (nearly) endless world and meet other like minded adventurers on your path. A few facts on MUDs related to this 'discussion':

- Grouping essentially did not exist. Most MUDs were not designed with grouping in mind and the technology at the time did not encourage it. You could 'band' together, but that was meant as a sociable and mostly roleplaying option. It was not a requirement.

- Adventure and story line were the key words. The most successful MUDs were those who had the best designed environment and quests (remember, still text only).

- Min/max-ing was something essentially unheard of. In most MUDs you could allocate your basic stat points, and you could sure 'gimp' yourself if you allocated wrongly, but in almost all cases you could still adventure through the world without any issues. In fact, a lot of people 'gimped' their characters on purpouse as it was a lot of fun to do (oh damn, again that word 'fun'), in true pen and paper D&D style.

- Unfortunately most of this changed in the latest generations of MUDs onward.

Eh? What are you banging on about? When were we talking about MUDs? Why the unasked for history lesson in what we all know?

May as well talk about D&D... or Chainmail even...

One builds on the other, sure, but you are ludicrous to talk about the MUD model when we are discussing MMORPGs.

They are a very different animal, so everything you bothered to type here is irrellevant in the discussion.

Gotta love psuedo intellectuals eh?

I'm truly sorry that my 'unasked-for history lesson' so thoroughly confused you, but I cannot be bothered to put it all in simpeler terms. Yet if you realy want to make the argument of it being a different animal, then you should start considering that games like WoW are the next step in the evolution of the MMO genre...

As should have been obvious from what I wrote, It wasnt what you wrote the confused me, just why you wrote it.

Simpler terms are really not necessary, I promise, but a I am still confused by your need to give an unasked for history lesson... That has nothing to do with the discussion at hand... Bewildering.

It isn't as bewildering as you think if you understand why I wrote that. But it seems that your own opinion on how the MMO genre should suit your own needs, makes you unable to grasp the argument made by that 'bewildering history lesson'.

(Hmmm, running out of colours if this continues)

I am starting to think maybe English isnt your first language? If it isnt, then thats cool, and I apologise. It's just that you seem to have comprehension issues.

It is an easy step to check my profile, as I did with yours btw. As you played the 'native English incomprehension card' twice, please proofread and check your own posts first, before trying it out on other people...

There is no comprehension issue here. It is just that you are trying to force your own opinion on others, using a few simple semantic issues here and there. This is a sign of weak argumentation as you are unable to see the general picture and have to resort to belittlement.

And I do blame this on the current crop of MMO players. But essentially they cannot help it though. They grew up with the games that are all about competition and missed those earlier games that were still about the adventure of the game (it is no coincidence that the whole genre of old style adventure games like Zork, Monkey island, Sam & Max, etc. has completely died out).

Erm... friend, they havent.

Point'n'Click adventures are still made, and Sam and Max are still selling...

Just because you have stopped looking, it dosent mean they stopped existing.

Who are you blaming now?

Ah yes, I concede to you this one. The financial success of adventure games is still huge these days. No wonder there are still countless numbers of these games produced every year. Maybe I shouldn't have used the term 'died out', I can see where it has confused you.

And btw, I don't think we'll ever be able to be friends.

Thank you, I accept your admission of being wrong.

But, actually, you said completely died out. This is a clear and definitive statement being presented as fact.

See, here is a great example of latching on to one word while ignoring the rest. So to help you out, here is my revised sentence:

(it is no coincidence that the whole genre of old style adventure games like Zork, Monkey island, Sam & Max, etc. has almost disappeared from the gaming scene in general in such a way that Vesavius is able to understand that it has become a small niche market. This with the purpose to show Vesavius that although some people still play the genre (myself included), it is no way comparable anymore to its heydays in the 80's and early 90's)

You see, you 'confuse' people when you make definitive statements that are incorrect. They tend to think you mean what you are typing. I guess thats their fault though, and not yours.

Never friends though? awww..... For real?  :(

Now to those who are saying that because MM-ORPG stands for Massive Multiplayer you need to group and otherwise just sod off, read again from which genre the current MMORPG evolved.

And read again how irrellevant that wh
