WAR open BETA on Aug 15th. Could it really be the beginning of the end for DAoC? I know I have shelved all my chars until at least the new server comes out, but on Friday I will be in line seeing what WAR is about.

Origins was their last hope. Now that that's pushed back....

I honestly believe that Mythic would love to see WarHammer do well, well enough that they could shut down DAoC. There really is no reason for a software company to take this long to launch a server that a majority of their playing base wants. They have already set out the rules, etc. THe coding can't be that difficult to do.

Guaranteed....WAR does well, Mythic will shut down DAoC in less than a year.

I intend to live forever -- So far so good!

They're not gonna shut it down just because WAR comes out.  They will cluster the servers over and over until there is no more player base and then they'll retire it.  Why kill something that still makes them money.  I don't think it's costing them much to keep it going, and I'm fairly certain that they're at least breaking even but more then likely they're making money off of it.

I think they're holding back on Origins because they want the potential Origins people to at least give WAR a shot instead of going back and playing DAoC.  That way they'll at least get a box sale out of it and have the potential of keeping that customer.  However if they are dissatisfied for whatever reason a few months down the line Origins will drop and the people that might have left WAR will go to DAoC and the money just keeps on flowing.

I'm pretty much inclined to agree with the above.  Active DAoC guilds are going to be gutted with WAR for at least a month until people figure out if they actually want to play WAR.  Then I expect the Origins server date to be released and people who don't like WAR to begin migrating back.  In the end though, if EQ (original) and UO can continue to run after all this time with low numbers, DAoC can also, so I don't expect it to disappear any time in the near future.

i doubt DAoC will die due to WAR.  it is a far more complex (wait 1-3 months after WAR's release and you will see why this is a good thing) and will retain a relativly healthy player base (about 1/3-1/2 of whats currently there if most people are only there for RvR)

also why do we even care?  they are both games from Mythic.

"A sin to believe evil of others.. seldom a mistake."

Companies have shut down games in favor of other projects before. Turbine shut down Asherons Call 2 in 2005 so they could devote all their resources to Dungeons and Dragons Online. So I guess anything is possible. Guess you just have to wait and see.

If I were Mythic, I would offer a plan where you can play both DAoC and WAR for one low price.

I thought they shut down Asheron's Call 2 because the game was terrible and everyone hated it?  A better example would be E&B which was down to 25k subs (not bad at the time) which was shut down by someone who could have afforded to keep it up no problem.

Its like kissing your sister I guess. I want WAR to succeed, and I want to enjoy it, at the same time I still love DAoC, and there is content there I havent even touched yet. And while wrestling with that, I still have a EVE character sitting in a starbase somewhere racking up trainning points that I havent even touched yet.

Please, explain how it's like kissing your sister. I don't understand what you're saying?

It's like something you want to do but shouldn't?
