I heard a recent rumor that Burning Crusade will go Free 3 months after WOTLK is released.
Any thoughts?

Windows Sucks, Mac OSX rocks, maby thats the reason WOW is so popular? |
dosn't sound logical at all, it's blizzard!! if they did i would become really suprised.. why don't they remove the mountly fee when they are at it? the game is payed down anyways, and saying the mountly fee is for server upgrades and new contents sounds bullshit, because wow is just as laggy today, as it whas in 2005, and all we got in all these years is 4 bgs with 1 map and lots of grinding |

You can download the game now for free without burning crusades. If we used Mythic as an example, you will have to wait for blizzards next expansion after WotLK for Burning Crusades to be free. They use a two behind system.

My guess is that the 'warchest' will become the normal box for new players. Currently After WotlK Although if they keep all 4 seperate boxes, it will be cool if WOW would holds 4 of the top 10 in pc game sales (currently they have 3 in the top 10) |

They gave burning crusade away to china I can't imagine why they couldn't do it for the rest of the world or why they wouldn't. WoW is based on expansion content as (old world, and outlands) will become worthless with northrend so they have to give people the base game and TBC for free so they will buy WOTLK and feel like they are actually doing something end game. Just like when the next expansion comes out in a year WOTLK will become free etc... |

No other game gives away the first part of the game for free. At best, they sell all the previous editions in one pack. Blizzard is making leveling easier, that is their way to get new players caught up. Consider this. Vanilla WOW is still the #5 best selling game last week. There is now way Blizzard will just give that away for free. |

Anarchy Online has the base game free, as in you don't have to pay a montly fee, or at least it was for a long time (not checked recently), in order to get you hooked and wanting to buy the expansions like Shadowlands and with buying the expansions comes paying for a monthly fee. Doubt they would do the same with WoW, or it's first expansion; for a very long time ;) |

A lot of games are free to play (there is a list on this site). They are generally not very good compared to the real commercial games ( LotRO, WOW etc). Anarchy Online has 20,000 subscribers.... WOW has 10,900,000 :) When I made my quote above, I was talking about commercial games like EQ that have like 10 expansions and still don't give away the initial client for free. |

It would make sense. Some people that left before BC might return if BC is given to them free. Blizzard would lose out on some box sales(which really mean nothing in the MMO business) but gain more subscribers. Also, since these returning people would fly through BC because of the increase in 60 to 70 leveling they might be tempted to try WotLK. |

Most of what Blizzard does serves to increase their revenue, which makes sense because it is what almost any company would do. I doubt they'd make Burning Crusade free, but if they did it would most likely be because they feel that they could get more subscriptions back (and hence make more money) by doing so. |

This makes the most sense historically and financially. The real long term benefit is in subscription fees so it would make sense to reduce the cost or combine previous versions rather than pitch one out there for free. |
