This much anticipated revamp should have opened up the customisation on gear greatly for the design artists that are now limited due to the current Character Skeleton models.

SOE is now trying to find a different way into getting this adressed, but I personally have given up hope on this :( As we have waited over 4 years for this already.

Yup have to agree with you the revamp wont come, not in EQ2 but  i would assume in EQ3 (in whatever form or name it takes) i just hope they've learned from thier mistakes with the models

Bang on the head of the nail eccotron, the money for sony (and SOE is now part of sony) is with the PS3 and they'll (rightly) concentrate all efforts towards that platform,pc gamers will have to get used to sharing the MMO genre with console gamers over the next few years,of that i'm sure.

Well, yeah.

It is pretty shallow.

That said, I can see how a lack of diverse gear in some situations might rankle some.

It's shallow, but it is a legitimate gripe.

The Xbox 360, PS3 and the fact that HDTVs are really montiors now, has blurred the line between console and computer gaming. However I will always be first and formost a PC gamer. With that said I do have both the 360 and PS3.

Bob the Cat says,
"Keep your password secret, you filthy communist."

Well, maybe you need to look at your competition and then ask if you have it so bad.  In terms of AAA fantasy MMORPG's, there are currently three: WoW, LotRO, and EQ2.  I admittedly don't know much about EQ2, but I've played WoW tons, and I saw a bit of LotRO's diversity firsthand.

LotRO is about equal with EQ2 in terms of customization.  You could argue it's slightly better or worse, but I wouldn't say there's a significant difference either way.  It added the same system that EQ2 did, having a second paper doll for armor that only affects appearance.

Just for the sake of mentioning them, AoC and Vanguard are even more generic in character looks than EQ2.

WoW is significantly worse in this aspect.  Well.  I'm actually going to go ahead and say it's terrible in comparison.  You look like a complete and utter retard, and frankly, the fact that they haven't implemented this feature that EQ2 and LotRO has is a big reason I'm considering canceling and not coming back for Wrath.  Here are your two choices in WoW:

1.  Look like a complete retard with completely mismatched stuff.  Actually, this is not a choice while leveling, it's simply how you're forced to look.

2.  If you happen to put large amounts of time into raiding or PvP, you can get a whole matching set.  This is assuming you're willing to sacrifice some power.  For most people, it's impossible to get completely matching gear, since almost any raider will be wearing a mix of different tiers, and any PvP'er will be wearing a mix of different seasons, and both may have some badge gear thrown in.

I think back to my characters in WoW while leveling, and they literally looked like a mentally challenged person that tried to dress themselves by pulling random stuff off the rack in a costume shop.  I'm not exaggerating when I say that.  Here, just take a look at this.  It's about right.  The joke here is that after this latest expansion, he only leveled his character up to 70 and didn't raid after that, so he looks like this as a result.

My point is that you might be bothered by this, but I think you actually have it better than anybody else, so I wouldn't get too pissed.

Big +! to this comment and the comments about the game engine.

People seem to love to rant in a vacuum with absolutely zero perspective.  EQ2 may have limited customization, but whats better?  And in any event, it IS a limitation of the game engine and this is an unavoidable fact of MMOs - they last so long (if they're good) that technology marches on.

You're supposed to play these games for fun and friendship.  If you're trying to build an alternate life with a "toon" that looks like your vision of a dream hero, you'll probably have to either adjust your expectations or come back to the genre in 20 years.

So many of the rants you find on forums are really rants about the current state of technology.  It also sucks that we dont have warp drive and a pill that cures cancer, but what can you do.  Either get cracking on making one or deal with it.

Well, not even getting into the incredible retarded look of WoW, or how LoTRO's armor looks like painted on cardboard, it's the ugliest looking crap I've seen in ANY game. All the armor has EXACTLY the same texture.... NONE, and don't even get me started on the cloaks... they're just a joke. Since a couple of ya decided to be jerks when someone made a good point, I'll do one better, and 3 or 4... please. That just shows ignorance. Take your ignorance elsewhere...

A couple T8 sets:

Same character, same level gear, all completely different, and this is only a few sets. There are plenty more, 8 to be exact (5 leather and 3 chain), but I wasted enough time on your stupidity to fulfill your requirement and more.

And here's some T7 (all chain) to compare tier to tier, just in case you'll say they all repeat:

Now some do repeat, as you see in the first one in T7 has the same type of pattern as the 5th one in T8. But there is a lot more variety than you claim, and I didn't even bother to show all the sets.BTW, the 1st pattern in T7 wasn't even available to non-raiders until T8, so everyone has a chance to wear something they like the looks of eventually.

The dresses and formal wear I agree on, but not many people wear dresses and slacks while adventuring. There are about 5 or 6 different patterns for formal wear, or non-formal wear, and all types of colors, but the most effort is spent on armor. And the cloaks are completely customizable and the best I've ever seen.

That's REALLY good for 24 different classes, and 19(?) different races, which is more than twice as much as those other games.

EDIT: I'm missing a couple pieces of some of the armor I don't have, or sold after moving into another set. So some repeats are just because I don't have those pieces.

WAR and WoW

The halfling wins the thread imo.

I wouldn't compare WoW and VG's customisation to EQ2's. EQ2 has waaaaaayyyyyy more customisation than either WoW or VG. I haven't come across any Sarnak that looks like my Necromancer yet. And my little Ratonga Dirge looks very different from most Ratongas since I made sure to choose absolutely the largest ears possible. It's a shame though that I have to hide her helmet: one beef I do have is that Kerra and Ratongas can't show their ears through their helmets.
