I tried this game again this last month and could not stand it. The new areas are like Vanguard used to be. Crash. Crash. Crash. 'Run out of memory errors' all over the new areas. I tried to find a solution in EQ forums... nothing! Then my buddy tried it. Crash. Crash. Crash. Then he finally decided to dump Vista and try again. Crash. Crash. Crash. Same freakin' memory error.

That was the end of that.

Been playing for almost 4 years. Been in game since release. To compare EQ2 to Vanguard's stability is just ridiculous. In almost 4 year the game has crashed for me at most 4 time, not bad, once a year. EQ2 on my system is one of the most stable mmos I have ever played.  With that said there is an issue with out of memory errors and vista. You probably did not look for info to hard since there is plenty of info about this issue on the EQ2 forums. EQ2 is a picky game and you do need to do a little research if you are having problems. EQ2 does not work easily on all systems like WoW. However I never have a problem with EQ2 on my system but I did do my research.

Excuse me, but I did research. This is an issue that began in June of 2007 and still has not been resolved. There are 79 pages of reported errors on this issue in the forums. That's over a year of the same issue being reported and it is still not fixed (and no sense of a fix on the way any time soon). I will give you the point that it probably does not compare to Vanguard (though they do seem to be fixing their issues), but it is still nonsense.

btw... it has nothing to do with Vista. The error occurs as often with XP as it does in Vista. And it is confined to new zones (from what I can tell).

Apart from that, this mmo just does not run well at all. The graphics (which were touted as ground breaking... and designed to take advantage of hardware years in advance) are terrible. The terrain is blocky, the character models are lifeless (same as Vanguard) and the populated areas suffer from unbelievable hitching even on low settings. I compare it now to LOTRO, AoC and Vanguard and frankly... laugh at it. True, this game has been out a while so its age will show, but for a game that was designed for 'future hardware' it just doesn't cut it.

That being said... I DO miss the glowing collectibles.

I can't even recall the last time I crashed in EQ2 (using Vista).

But the most common cause of out of memory errors seems to be

1. outdated video drivers

2. even more outdated video cards

3. Occasionally, due to not fully updated DX10 drivers.

Note that most OOM errors come from the video card or driver that I have seen on several different computers.

The research comment was not a put down at you. It was a statement reguarding one of EQ2 weak points and that is you have to do research often for this game. Unlike other mmos that just work no issues like WoW. I agree about "future hardware" SOE used this to advertize the game and as it turned out the engine if dated and not design for the way system went over the last 4 years. They dropped the ball on that one.

In reguards to your feeling about the graphic I will totally disagree with that big time. Even with its dated engine EQ2 is one of the best looking game out. It also has the best character animations as well. However to enjoy this you have to have your ducks in a row (research). Not always the best systems can enjoy this. Like I said if you have one of the setups that EQ2 likes (which I do) EQ2 look fantastic. I play at 1920 x 1080 with all graphics near maxed. I get no lower then 30 fps and that is in raids or in the main cities when lots of players are around. When I am just out and about i can get 90+ fps. I play on a 36 inch aquos anfd EQ2 looks totally amazing still after almost 4 years. We may have a different opinion on graphic but I do not find these blocky, and lifeless. These are just gameplay screens it took with the above specs.

eq2 is a 32bit program so is can only use 2G max. Doesn't matter how much RAM you have or what version of windows. eq2 did add the \3Gb switch which allows programs to use more then 2G. With this added to the boot.ini file i have yet to crash because of out of memory. This works best if you have 4G or more.

EQ2 currently has a problem with class balance and that's really trickling down to all areas of the game.

Caster DPS is currently being outmatched at times against melee DPS.  Overpowered assasins come to mind.

Guardian really overshadowing all other tank types this expansion.  Although they should be very defensive they shouldn't out DPS all other plate tank classes.

It should be beserkers, shadowknights, and then either pallies or guards wriggling for the last 2 plate tank DPS spots. (I play a SK btw)  The tank types minus guards also need some survivability fixes.  Especially the SK.

This tank issue can make it hard for some to find groups at times.  It you run into a guild that's itching to raid you could find trouble gearing up a non-guard and non-pally tank.  That and some scouts being able to tank heroic content in place of a tank.

I think it's the current balance problems are where the real problem lies.  That and they just need to advertise more.

Lastly the graphics are great from my screen and its defenitely not the problem with this game.

EQ2 taught me not to play tanks again and I've avoided them as much as possible in other MMOs since.  I'm on the Station Pass so I may check things out time to time.  To see if tanks recieve some kind of help in the next expansion and if they nerf the silly tanking of heroics by scout types.

Funny enough I'm enjoying my first trek through Star Wars as a Jedi and my run with a soceror in Vanguard more.

The massive number of "Keys available!" threads should answer the original question.  SOE is in desperation mode at the moment.  The game has been stagnating, as far as player population is concerned.  In the middle of a multi-month free play trial, along with all expansion, for every former player who wasn't banned (or had their ban lifted), there were still a few posts on the official forums asking for another server merge, due to low player populations on most of the servers.

Basically, EQ2 isn't doing great.  It isn't in any danger of shutting down, but it isn't really growing either.  The game isn't going anywhere, but it also isn't growing (slowly withering would be more apt).  If you do decide to give the game a try, roll your character on Antonia Bale, since it is the only server with a significant population.

I disagree with you on this subject. SOE is not on desperation mode. They opened accts. awhile back and I think they still are to let past and new players see how well the game is doing now. EQ2 ihas had alot of good things happen to it. I hated it when it 1st released, but now its probably the best mmo out right now. I played during the free access and found the game to run smooth as glass and had outstanding polish. The only reason I am not playing it now is I actually began to have fun in SWG again and plan on returning to EQ2 soon. Its an exciting time right now for mmo's for myself I have 3 games to explore and have a good time in. The Saga od Ryzom is back too and thats a fantastic game as well. One last thing EQ2 ran smooth on my old system 1.6 Core 2 Duo,Radeon x800 XL video card and 1.5 megs of ram. I was pleasantly surprised on how well the game looked on such an old PC. I was on the Nagena server and the population was fine.

I sort of disagree with you with this to me as a vet player to give away everything free to returning players is a sign of desperation, you dont see any MMO company doing this anywhere (correct me if im wrong).

I said on the official boards that they where indeed right to give away the original game for free, hell that should be free to play now IMO but thats another matter, but to give away EQ2 just seemed very desperate, like the fat girl at the dance wearing a dress thats to tight for her fat legs.

Wow put out a free trial early in its release and is still going.Wow also offers scrolls of ressurection for old accts. WoW is still going strong. Last nights Fan Faire SOE says they gained 20% more to the population in new subs and old accts. being reactivated. Now whether the results are actually true or not is another thing. Now I played EQ2 for awhile before goin back to swg and from what I saw on Nagena server it was fine.

Funny, I feel exactly the same way.  I played a zerker since launch, then betrayed and became a Guard.  The curse of being a tank....If your not the MT in a guild and your looking to get geared up.

I rerolled now into a healer class on AB.  And i havnt looked back.

That's the regular subscription price. That's after me saying "I don't want any extras thanks".
$22.99. That has to be a mistake. Why in the f*ck would I subscribe back to a game after all this time that charges $23 a month to play.
That's nearly $26 a month for me in Australia. It was $16.23 for the last month of Age of Conan for me, an easily comparable product.

AUD = Australian Dollars, you must of put in your location because the same thing happened to me a year or so ago back in SWG.

I was thinking of getting EQII, I would like to play a Paladin so are they also gimped?

Also, shouldn't melee DPS be superior to caster DPS simply because casters have the range and (sometimes/usually) AoE?

I have seen some palys out tank a guard; plus palys fear spec comes in handy.
