Lets look at the skill deck in a different way

Magic the Gathering

You have a deck you have put together. But, you have the luck of the draw on what card you will have to play. So, for example, I start with 5 "skills" in my hand (bar). Now I lay down a card, and a new card appears (the bar rolls and I have a new selection.)

Now, if I stacked my deck correctly I can have ...

An Attack, A heal, a ranged, melee, buff...summons, etc.

See where this is going?

So, I play a warrior type (remember classes will not be as well defined here as say WoW). I then line my deck (bar) like so

Melee - Heal - Buff - Ranged - Melee

Then next row may be

Heal - Melee - Buff - Ranged - Melee

And on.

See? I have already been thinking of this. I think it rocks. Guild Wars like with limited choices, and the game is not gear dependent, and more skill. Practice will make you a winner.

Of course we will eventually get wiki's with various builds and decks. No, I think the deck will be awesome.

And to make it slightly more interesting .... there are combo openers, followups and finishers ...

DROOL!

No way. Talk about fun stuff. I hope it plays as fun as it sounds.

Same here. The MMO industry (and if I could be so blunt as to say the entire gaming industry) needs something new added to the table. I'm glad somebody is taking a risk with trying something that could either be very innovative or a crash.

EDIT: The only problem I see with this type of system is something that plagues Guild Wars (which uses a slightly similar system yet isn't as limited): cookie cutter builds. As GWs is basically composed of 50% "Touchers" (yes, that's an actual build) and Savannah Heat Eles, this game will most likely fall into the same path. Unlike a class based game where everyone uses the same skills, you have to balance every single ability with every other single ability. That's one hell of a task. Then again, I barely understand this combat system, so I'm going to wait and see before I make claims. Overall I think it's a really neat idea.

Balancing is aaaalways an issue .... but .... this game being an "fps" type of game, skill is as important, and maybe even more important then your skilldeck :D

the skill decks problem is repetitiveness, all the videos ive seen they use the same god dam spells over and over and over, and the noises those spells make are hideous..

if they modeled it after card games like magic the gathering

they should have made it random, build ur deck and then randomly draw 5 cards and use ur judgment as to what u wanna do with  what you got.. thats how it should have been.. you'll see people use different skills cuz they have to.

by choosing everything, all u gonna see is same shit over and over.  look at the videos... spike wierd zoorum move spike zoorum move over and over and over.

You can use spells at any level, and you pick what ever you want in the order you want them. So it may just be a case of people like those spells, or they are all low levels and have not yet got to the higher level content.

More than likely the fast pace TCOS seems to have will make you ignore the repitiveness you believe the deck to have. (Not saying it isnt repitiive for all I know this game is terrible ;p will just have to wait till we play it)

I agree with the sound effects in terms of spells, specifically life tap it is a incredibly annoying sound, hopefully it is something beta testers have noticed and will get fixed.
