Latest Blog Entry - Perception is Everything
From my blog It's All Fun in Games [LordDarkmist]

I hope we can all agree that things are not fun or enjoyable if they aren’t interesting to us. Let examine some things that interests us. For instance, the things that celebrities do are more interesting and significant to many of us, than what Average Joe does over there. Or what Harry Potter does in the book or movie. Or a protagonist, antagonist, etc… Anything that somehow appears more important or significant than it really is… The point is that we perceive it as so, and think more into it. Therefore, it is fun. And these interests are all shaped by our life experiences and culture. Secondly, we are all innately selfish, so anything dealing with us is, also, significant and important. Anyhow, there are things we consider more meaningful than others.

This brings me to another point. We all create expectations at one time or another. And it’s part of the reason why we consider something is more important than another, because we expect it to be more important, either now or to some future circumstance. I read an article on superstition months ago, which spoke about an experiment, done some time around the 1950s, where pigeons were rewarded with food no matter what they did; the birds all made up different rituals as they believed it was necessary in order to be rewarded (e.g. bobbing their heads, walking in circles, etc.). Therefore, it is possible to lead us into thinking a certain way, even if we are the ones that lead ourselves into thinking that particular way. Because MMOs are very much about the experience and perception of the players, these things need to be taken into consideration by developers. It’s not important what actually literally goes on inside the game; what is most important is what goes on in the mind of the players and how they interpret it—is it significant!? What I am proclaiming is that developers can do so much with this idea to improve the experience and enjoyment of the players. Developers can design games in such a way so that players believe there is more to the game than there actually is (e.g. having, both, secret locked dungeons that can be unlocked and can’t be unlocked will lead some players to believe that it is somehow possible to unlock the ones that are only aesthetically there… however, players will eventually doubt its existence if contents aren’t continually updated to guide the players to believe so…). These things are great and they have existed in previous MMOs, even if the developers never realized it. You’d know what I’m talking about if you’ve ever heard of any rumors created by the community in MMOs.

All said and done… Developers need to focus on the players’ experience, as perception is everything…

    • tell me what you think about this....
    • Maybe you should try to get a better grade

Now that I'm in a University, I feel like I was such a slacker in high school even if my GPA was above a 4.0 in high school... And seriously, people only get low grades if they don't try enough. But of course, there's a trade off between social life, happiness, school, etc....

Anyways, at least be happy you get that much money just for your birthday, even though I agree it's somewhat unfair that you can't spend your money, even though that was the similar case for me. I got less than 200 dollars per year, by adding up all the holiday and birthday money...

    • I was thinking...
    • I'm not particularly social and it's not like strangers really care when they say "How are you today?" or "Have a nice day"... I prefer it this way, since it's more convenient.

But I disagree about there not being alot of teenagers or kids about, or atleast that doesn't seem to be the case at where I live. Edit: but I think there's less demand for other things like toys and comics these days because video games are taking over the world

    • MMOs with a 'real' sense of ownership.
    • Unless the devs somehow makes it believable, the ability for everyone to own "luxury" commodities just doesn't make sense to me (especially in fantasy with housing, because people are supposed to be more like traveling adventurers in my opinion)... And then if that's the case that only a few will have them, then what's the point for implementing it for a few only...

As far as ownership goes, I truly don't care about housing. I only use it for storage... I think pets work better. The daedalus project supports the notion that most people want pets. If integrated well with the game... I picture myself having a semi-unique horse for traveling (in games where horses are the only mounts, but please, no vanishing and appearing acts. Have the horse come like in Zelda or Shadow of the Colossus or require the player to come get it like how Chocobos work in FF) or  for battle I would want a mean looking elemental monster that does not need to really be very unique in appearance, but hopefully its attacks/skills are customizable.

    • So, How about That "Heroes" Episode?
    • The episodes didn't bother me. I enjoyed it..

Honestly, man does my memory sucks... I totally forgot what the mother's power was. And if the cheerleader didn't say "mom?", I would have had no clue who that was.

Wasn't the last episodes in Season 2 dealing with that immortal villain guy and Peter (The main character's name is Peter right?) getting into that building and getting the formula after Peter knocked out the japanese teleporter guy? EDIT: read wikipedia... okay, so he caught the vial. I still don't remember...

P.S. - seriously, my memory is awful, I can't remember their names... I remember Ando though..
