Its not fair that I used a good example? What, you want me to use a BAD example so that you won't know what I'm talking about? Why don't you just ask me to "argue worse" while you are at it?

And yes, I suppose there is a difference between a lie and a miscalculation. But the thing is that I gave you two examples. I don't know for sure if the Darkfall devs have outright lied about their release date (I suspect they have but I can't prove it). But I do know that my second example, Shadowbane, did involve developers who directly lied about the release date of their game. On one hand we had their public relations manager "Ashen Temper" telling us the game would be released within six months. Then on the other hand they KNEW the game was over a year away from release because that was the time frame they gave their new publisher (Ubisoft) when they signed the deal with them. The players discovered this lie when Ubisoft put out a press release without telling the devs and in the press release they openly stated the game was still over a year away from release, conflicting with what their public relations manager had already told the community. And that is an example of a case where we KNOW that a game developer intentionally lied to their fans about the release date of their product.

I have never seen an MMO that wasn't delayed multiple times during its development. This is only my opinion, but I think that it is common practice for MMO developers to lie about the release date of their game to build and maintain a high level of hype for their product. Think about it:

If a game developer says "Our game will be out in six months!"

You will say: "Great! I'll be keeping an eye on this game!"

As opposed to if they say: "Our game is still atleast three years away from release..."

You would say: "Okay, I'll get back to you in three years then..."

So if they want to keep the hype going, they have to lie about the release date of their product. Otherwise you just wouldn't care.

I will grant you though that Anet usually keeps their release dates fairly well. The only exception to this I can name would be that when Guild Wars first came out they stated that new campaigns would be released about once every six months. But we waited a LOT longer than that. However that may have been more of a "miscalculation" than a lie. Maybe...

My main concern with GW2, versus the fairly high quality we saw in GW, is that from the sound of things GW2 is going to be a VERY different game. Usually when a developer makes such a huge change to their game design it also means the new product will not have the same level of quality we saw in their previous products. A great example of this is Turbine who made Asherons Call, a solid MMORPG with a good following of loyal customers, who then went on to make Asherons Call 2 which was an absolute joke of an MMORPG that had to be shut down (while the original Asheron's Call is still running no less!).

So I'm a bit concerned that the quality we have come to expect from Anet is about to take a long walk off a short pier.

You statements about ANet are all speculation. You can prove absolutely none of this, as is your comments about developers "lying" about their release dates.

Darkfall is not a good example, simply because it's an extreme case. That's like saying "all dogs are vicious" and using the case of one dog mauling a person to death as your substantiation to your point.

and for the record, I don't think you could argue worse. In fact, you aren't arguing at all. Arguments involve substantiated facts, meaning a sweeping statement is one of the worst things you can do in an argument. You may have given two examples, but prove to me that ALL developers lie and I'll gladly shut up. That's all I ask you to respond to in my post. If you can't do that then don't even bother because there's nothing to argue about.

Example: How many years have we been told that Darkfall was only a year away from release? Three or four years now?

      Another example: Shadowbane. Nuff' said.

My bet is that GW2 is ATLEAST two years away from release. And even once its released it will probably be another year or two after that before they fix enough bugs, game play imbalances and stupid design mistakes to make the game worth playing. That seems to be the standard MMORPG developers set for themselves these days.

There is a different between lying and miscalculating. Would you rather they release a half-finished game?

The fact of the matter is that the proof is in the pudding. ArenaNet released Guild Wars as a finished, high-quality product. I see no reason for them to do the same with Guild Wars 2. They've proved themselves with 4 game releases so far in the form of the three Guild Wars campaigns and expansion.
