Biography

I have two main ambitions in life, at this time. This first is to travel the world, especially to do a road trip across the USA. Second, to finish and publish my first novel. I love MMORPG''s, as well as many other things, which I don''t have space to fit in here!

    • LoTRo - which was your favourite area ?
    • Now that you mention it, aye, I agree with the Lone Lands being the worst zone.   My 'honeymoon' period off the game probably ended at this zone.   It was the first time that I felt any sense of grind with the game, and I realised somewhat sadly, that I had not discovered the 'Holy Grail' and am still to find it (if I ever will).

Thankfully, I then discovered Trestlebridge and the North Downs, and was able to forget my somewhat bland time exploring The Lone Lands (quite aptly named).  I did love the view of Weathertop though, and how it got more detailed as you got closer.

Anyway, stroll on the Mines of Moria.  Which begs the question.  Will people refer to Moria as MM, when they are looking for a group?  In which case, won't this cause a lot of problems with people mistaking it as Misty Mountains?  (I always look for the downside in things, or problems that don't exist, one of the flaws in my character)

    • It's a strange phenonenom, but I've noticed that when you go back to an older game, one which you thought the graphics were amazing, when you try it again, you are usually disappointed.

I've been salivating over the looks off next-gen games for awhile.  Due to my aging pc, I was unable to play them.  So I finally got rid off my dusty, old PS 2 and bought a 360.  At first the graphics were amazing, but after awhile, I found that I had gotten 'used' to them.  Now, I EXPECT draw dropping visuals from the games I buy for it, and if they are not up to scratch, then I get disappointed.

After several weeks I returned to Lotro, and fair enough my machine does not handle the game in Dx10,  but I noticed a drop in the visual quality, just because I had gotten used to the next-gen visuals from my console.

The same thing happened when I went back to EQ2, after being away from the game for over a year.  I had an image of the EQ2 graphics in my head, which thought it was much more superior to Lotro in the visuals department.  However, when I got back into the game, I was taken aback by how dated the visuals looked, and that Lotro was a much more beautiful game.

So I think you just have to accept the game for the technological level it was made for, and judge it on its own merit, rather than compare it to next-gen games such as AoC.  I remember someone made a video comparing AoC and WoW, just when AoC got released, and it slagged off WoW's more dated, and comical look.  However, it was hardly a fair comparison, bearing in mind the minimum spec's required for each title.

In finishing, aye, you may be disappointed for awhile, but when you adjust to the game, and accept the graphical limitations of the game engine, then you will be able to appreciate the true beauty of Lotro, especially with the upcoming expansion; Mines of Moria.

No probs, I'm glad you didn't take offence, just that with all the jargon, it was a bit excruciating to read.

Anyway, it's your game, and if you enjoy it, then that is fair enough.  It just sort of put me off trying Ryzom that's all.

Now I play 50/50 male/female although I don't seem to get free stuff anymore.

P.S.  Why do people get hung up if a guy plays a female character?  No one role plays anymore anyway.  No one gets uptight playing Lara Croft in Tomb raider, hell that is what sold that game.  No one gets upset when I play an orc and they find out I am not an orc in RL....

er...maybe because orcs do not actually exist in real life?  The real question is 'why would a guy choose to go a female avatar, merely because they like the look of a pixelated character?'  Afterall, you must know that there will be players, especially male ones, who wil rightly, or wrongly, may interpret you to be female.  So with that being the case, why would you, knowing this, still choose to go a female character?   I don't give any credence to the arguement that you went a female character, 'because it looks better'.

They have removed the lore from the main website so maybe they are revising it and have plans. The original story arc was very impressive. Unfortunately Ryzom never got the playerbase to implement it fully or develop the encyclopedia trials. There are numerous tribes throughout Atys with a dynamic interrelated fame system -- each tribe has multiply mission givers both in and outside of their camp -- I can only imagine how they intended to devlop this. They did have a plan for Ryzom and not a static lore but a developing storyline.

As for Ryzom being successful this time, personally I think they are getting off to a pretty good start. A lot of games have real server problems when they get up and going. And they do have to get Ryzom working on their new servers and I have seen only a few minor Please Waits -- much less than when GF got Ryzom. I think this rampimg up the game population is so far  going rather well and pretty fast actually.

As for grinding, all MMOs are grinds even the games that are quest based -- just quest grinds. Me, I don't care for the quest grinds.

There's so much depth to the gameplay in Ryzom, the action system is just great. How did you get forage resources in any other game. In Ryzom you can track to your source's area if you like. Then you have to prospect up the sources before you can extract them. Prospecting options each with like 6 upgrades each upgrade costing more -- cone arc, distance, multiply sources, extra extraction time, knowledge of what is prospected, material specialization 2 levels deep, terrain specialization, (Sup, Ex, choice, or fine quality or just up to chosen quality ), hope i didn't miss anything. Extraction -- gentle and harmful versions of Quality, rate, and speed. 2 main health bars for the source that have to be careplanned for to keep them from going to 0 -- 1 of them will cause the source to either explode or gas toxic fumes ( either of which might kill you ), the other will kill the source. And the source has 2 modes ranging from 0-5 for both and it usually changes at least once during the extraction. So You have to cast Care Plan Actions during a sources Extraction or have another player Care Plan the source for you while you extract it. And after skill level 160 not having enough focus will become an issue and you may want to learn how to do multiply action digs -- that's right you can do one action say up to Q160 and the another action up to say Q210 and then again another action up to Q250 to get larger quantities out of a dig. Oh and did I mention that the lower the Quality of the extarction the faster the source loses extraction time left ( sorry that is confusing but do not know how else to put it ). Oh and did I also mention that the source can have from 10-30 quantity in it and you can tell by looking at a source before extracting it so you can choose the best source if you want. Or maybe you prefer to learn how to kill the source early by care planning in such a way that the sources health dies prematurely. And tracking Supreme and Excellent sources is a chapter unto itself.  Is leveling digging up a grind? -- Yep but you do have to experimnt with new actions as you get them to be really efficient. And you can always do Excellent and Supreme digging when you are high enough level and that is hardly a grind unless you call spending 3-4 weeks tracking and digging sources all over 4 highest level Prime Root Zones grinding. Oh and the mobs down there, think you've seen herd migration and herd feeding above ground, welcome to the world of Vorax's. And then you've just become one of the inducties into Sup mat digging.

And creating actions in Ryzom really does have a lot of choices, magic nukes can be duoed, bombed, sprayed, or richoceted. You have credits that will reduce costs for less range or longer casting time. There are after skill level 125 - 7 different magic damages the caster can use. And you can have a higher success rate for over paying for an action.

And when you hunt something in other games how does that work -- go to an area and kill the same creature cause basically that's all that's there. Lets see in Ryzom, you can find some areas like that but a lot of the areas have multiply herbivore and carnivore herds interacting in the same area. I've seen small amounts of this in other games but nothing that comes close to Ryzom.

Maybe for you Ryzom is boring, Me,I tried Aoc and really thought it was pretty good but after a bit it seemed sort of lifeless compared to Ryzom for me. The only other game that has given me the same feeling was EQ but I prefer the skill based system of Ryzom and frankly EQ is just not the same anymore after all those expansions.

The wind blows, the seasons change, the hedrs migrate, the carnivores hunt herbivores ( sometimes the carnivores die ), named mobs roam large areas wrecking havoc and not on a specific path, there are bandit camps, there are tribal camps with Kami or Karavan alliance, tribes have groups roaming thru zones, the locations of herds even change with server resets.

Ryzom is not perfect but I have not been able to find any other game that even comes close to the immersion I feel on Atys.

Oh and did I mention the great community and CHAT.

I'm sorry, I don't mean any offence, but that post has got to be the most boring thing I have ever read in my entire life.   I'm not exaggerating, that seriously was so boring that it actually became a GRIND to read!

I've went an downloaded Ryzom.  Had even started it.  However, the OP made some very eloquent points.  In rebuttel, I read that.

Sorry to the posters in the rest of this thread, but I had such a bad headache after the first page, that I could not bring myself to read anymore.

Try reading the above post from the perspective of a new player, who has yet to understand the jargon, and maybe you will see my point.

Such a promising game, but this has scared me off so badly that I don't know whether to ever play it again.
