Latest Blog Entry - What happened to fair fights?
From my blog My MMO development, and my thoughts on the MMO market [Pyrostasis]

Maybe I'm just showing my age here, and maybe what Im looking for is a thing of the past but I think MMO's have lost a key feature of fun. Fair fights.

I recently started playing EvE with a few guildmates from another game. Friend and I have been trying to talk the guild into playing EvE for a few years now, but no one would give it a shot due to the skill system and time it took to get started. However, with the recently WAR and AoC issues, the guilds gotten a bit more open to alternatives.

Our guild is heavily pvp oriented so pvp is what we wanted to jump into right away. Two of us have fairly high skilled characters so pvp would be interesting with 2 of us being good and 4 of us being rather weak. We looked for another corp of smaller folks and ended up settling on a 40 man corp that mainly focused on PVE.

Before we declared war on them we contacted their CEO, let them know we were just looking for some fights and that we hopped for a good clean war. She was worried that we were going to use some high end ships on her, and we promised we would keep it to battle cruiser or less and never use more than six pilots on them.

The day of the war happened, and we began our search for the evil guild. We only knew the names of four of them so finding them became quite a challenge. 5 of us managed to catch 2 of them in one system. We had a BC a Hac and 3 frigates, they had 2 bc's. The second we closed range they doced. So we waited....and waited...and waited.... guys said screw it for the evening so it was just the hac and the bc sitting outside the station with two bcs doced.

They refused to fight. We offered a one on one, they refused. We logged.

We got on this morning 2 of us, BC and hac again. In space outside our station were 2 of them... apparently waiting on us. We undoc and they warp to a stargate. We ask them to come to us to fight, they refuse. Tell us to come to the stargate. Well right here we more or less knew it was a trap. Only reason to pull us to the stargate was to bring more folks in... but we wanted a fight badly. So we said screw it and warped to the gate.

They had a Drake bc and a Blackhawk Cruiser on the gate. We engaged the cruiser immidiately as EWAR is quite a threat. The second we fired the stargate started cycling people through...as we had expected. The cruiser exploded shortly there after... but... it was over. 15 people from the other corp (10 that had joined THAT day) warped in just to kill the 2 of us. We did manage to kill another before their battleships that had jumped in slagged us.

To top it all off they spent the next hour laughing at us and trash talking us.... what a victory. Two ships vs 15...

So what exactly happened to the small group game?

What point in MMO development did you and 2 of your buddies stop being enough to participate and have a good time and make some form of a difference?

I can remember playing UO where a duo and trio were standard, and competition was fierce. If you got beat you learned and went back, you didnt bring 600 people.

DAOC had the same mechanics on mordred and even live servers where a duo trio or four man could more than handle themselves in open field even against greater numbers, but somethings changed in the new games and new development companies.

Lets look at Warhammer. Game was made by the developers of DAOC. DAOC was a great game. Skill meant a lot. Your 8 people could fight sixteen if the other team didnt work well together. This gave you the ability to deal with the folks who liked running huge groups. CC, interrupts, tactics... all led to the ability of a smaller group being able to make a difference and take part. Sadly WAR has none of these.

Ranged CC is minimal and fights are all about who brings more people to the battle. Population issues that were a problem in DAOC but manageable by mechanics were magnified simply by the fact the smaller realm cant compete and thus just stops playing.

Why was the smaller game removed?

Why do folks feel the need to bring excessive numbers to kill a inferior force?

I miss the days were a zerg was able to be controled by people who played well... now... its zerg, die, or GTFO.

Anyone else frustrated and disheartened by the amount of unfair fights in mmo's today?

You might want to try Xfire's live stream, not sure if it supports Aion quite yet but its definitely higher quality than that.

I have not bought this and other expansions listed there.

Does this mean that this expansion Rise of Kunark is free to me now? As well as the others listed?

with their recent promo this last summer "Living Legacy" they pretty much gave everyone ROK to come play again. There is however a new expansion that just released. You wont need to buy it though till you get closer to the cap, Id say around 70ish.

I never see a game that favor the harassers than this game.

its a pvp game... however, the wardec system definitely favors folks who dont want to fight.

#1 If you stay in the starter corporation (which you can rejoin at any time) you cant be wardeced.

#2 IF you are wardeced, you can leave and join another corporation and bypass the war completely... many people do this sadly.

#3 Many people wardec themselves with alt clans making any future wardecs impossible.

#4 Many corps make their own alliances to kick the prices up as well.

Truth is, PvP in eve isnt half as scary as folks make it out to be. Yes you will lose ships, but folks dont seem to realize that a group of properly fit frigates can drop higher class ships very easily if they know what they are doing.

If your looking at learning how to fight back in EvE you might want to take a look at www.agony-unleashed.com They offer pvp classes and are very good at teaching you everything from the basics to advanced pvp group mechanics.

What are your views on PvP?

I don't like PvP combat.
I think it is the best part about MMORPG's.
I don't care either way.
