I don't go into an MMO , at any time, thinking it will be worhtwhile. I always constantly evaluate the course of the game. When it becomes apparent that the course is not good or not for me. I leave.
I never get "burned" because I never become a silly fanboi constantly falling in and out of love.
I bought WAR after doing the Open "Beta" played it for a month and realized the RvR mechanics are tragically flawed. It made me sad, but I did not feel "burned". First half of the game was fun, it had a lot of good stuff.
People act like these developers are some girlfriend who lied to them. In some cases they are lying a lot. But in many they simply make dumb decisions. That is the case with WAR they just didn't get it. AoC was very shifty for some time and in that case if I had bought their crap maybe i would have felt burned. But they stunk a mile away in my opinion so I held back.
I guess people look at a some list of features and they get big hearts in their eyes like some kind of cartoon character. Anyone who does that will constantly get burned. Every product ever created and marketed has some list "great" features to make it look good.
If you look at overpromise, ability to deliver, and whether it makes sense in total. Then you are usually pretty good. I don't ever know whether a game or expansion will be good. But the obvious alarm bells are usually pretty much all you need to avoid getting burned.
Alot of people act like a game that did not turn out well is a burn though. They get overdramatic and they just start becoming a hating stalker. That is silly. I can see that with dishonest games. But games where the devs just screwed up. Well they just screwed up. That is it. Anyone who thinks a game where the devs screwed up is a burn, well they need help. Seriously go see a therapist you are not right with the world.

Almost all MMOs are this way now. A lot of people prefer to solo, and only group when absolutely necessary. You have to join a Kin or Guild in order to get social interaction in modern MMOs.
Well technically I would say life has always been this way. If you move to a town with a very large college (like say 40k or more students) you will find that most people stay within their group of friends and rarely do too much outside of it.
Some MMOs have just molded themselves to what actually occurs in real life. Games like UO were like this, but games like EQ or FFXI had rather nastily enforced grouping and were less like this, but jsut as socially distasteful IMO. Forced socialization tends to just make greedy people.
Games like CoX have the best socialization I have seen. Reminds me more of a smaller college town were people are not so stand-offish but also more laid back and don't try to turn you into "their kind of person".
I think if you look outside of MMOs it all starts to fit into a larger picture. Assuming everyone wants to talk to everyone is not just misguided. Its backasswards. Haven't you ever seen "Revenge of the Nerds"?
Also as far as LOTRO specifically alot of people do group quite often but there are also a number of people who solo. I personally prefer to explore alone for two reasons I don't want to burden others/have them burden me with how I feel like doing it and I don't want to not have an idea of what is going on when other people are depending on me.
I have rarely had real rtouble getting a group for the major stuff. Off the path stuff yeah sure that can be a problem. All in all a lot of people run around in small fellowships with kin mates. And in a small fellowship you can do a lot. Therefore they are not going to take in any old stranger who may be annoying or pushy or bossy or incompetent.. At the same time they are usually happy to have decent people around.
I think a lot of people make excuses. They suck at winning people over and making friends and then blame the game or other people. If you are friendly, just ask people how they are doing and be helpful you can quickly make a network of acquaintences.
If you demand that everyone always be wanting to group with everyone then you are essentially forcing certain small groups of friends to tolerate unpleasant people on a pretty regular basis. People don't really want to do that. On the other hand people do want and will actively go out of their way to group with people they like or at the least know are fairly OK.
Do you have a high opinion strangers or the general MMO populace. Have you ever used the term "WoW kiddie" or "WoW tard"? Are you surprised that people are skeptical about grouping with people they don't know if you have?
People tend to operate in small groups of friends this has always been true.

I don't think Mythics silence can be interpreted as some great conspiracy, they were taking their time to capture the data and work on resolving the problem.
No reason for hysterics, they are addressing the issue in a timely manner. Not everything requires the developer to fall on their sword.
Everything can be interpreted as a conspiracy, you just have to be creative enough to come up with it.
Of course getting proof is something else entirely.

The only thing stopping people from ORvRing is the people themselves and server population.
With the new free transfer from Mythic i transferred to a medium sized server and I see a lot of RvR daily (which I join) and may see a full Warband destroying a keep lord and taking zones within an hour.
The City Sieges almost happened on my Destruction server because we controlled everything and everyone tried to play (and win) scenarios to help our side take over a Fortress but we did fail.
Anyway, give WAR time to fix their bugs and become better. I personally can't wait for the two tanks coming out and I surely can't wait for the new class which will replace either the Greenskin or Dwarf class.
I don't agree that is the only thing although it is an important aspect. The campaign itself is pretty much crap. The lack of any real overall strategic meta-game makes T4 pretty bad. T2 it was ok but T4 without that is just a waste of time.
Unfortunately that first impression is perfectly accurate for T1 and even T2, but it starts to go downhill in T3 and get quite bad in T4.
Which November expansion were you most excited about?
