Nothing I warned about in beta was addressed:
- explore vast new lands -- nope, no lands to explore, can't explore at all
- see wondrous new sights -- sorry, no sights at all, except repetitive city scenes. And the sea is flat with no waves.
- battle the weather, hurricanes -- no, no weather at all. No whitecaps, no wind tells on the water. Nothing.
- become the best cannon maker in the New World -- sorry, everybody makes exactly the same things, nothing to learn.
- learn amazing avatar combat -- hah!
That leaves one thing: ship combat. PoTBS is a decent ship combat simulator, with some add-on features to make it into a MMO of sorts. Being a sailor IRL, I really enjoyed that part of the game. There is no other part in the game, really, anyway.

You mentioned the Austin paper, probably the American Statesman. The reporters there, especially the long-termer Lilly Rockwell, are frequent guests at Richard Garriott's lavish entertainments. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of "presents" came their way, as well. He's had a lot of gaming media in his corner. It helps to avoid criticism to really cultivate the media.
Actually, this was in the Chronicle. Point well taken anyway :)
What irritated me about the game was RG saying, in our local Austin paper, that TR "broke new ground", was "next generation", etc, etc.If they had said, "here try this little game, tell us what you think", it would have been different than "hey! this is the next generation, huge, and ground-breaking game! you will love it!"
I only played in beta, and hated it from the start. No worries there, I don't like a lot of games, But to be told by one of the "giants" of the MMO world that TR was the next great thing, and then to see what a pile it was, is irritating. That is why I have a special grudge against it.
Good riddance, TR and RG.
I played in beta, and in normal play got a FT to 50. Then quit.
- no exploration
- no scenery
- no crafting
- no safe place to PvE
- no weather
- bad melee combat
- gankfest all 'round, including the insta-port flipping
Yes, it is common to use packers as portable storage. You can buy them in main cities, and park them in the stables at those cities.
Packers eat food when they are moving in the field, and they can be attacked and killed. While in a stable, they do not consume food and are immune from attack.
In your opinion, what kind of gamer are you?
